Class XI girl jumps into lake, dies

A 17-year-old Class XI student of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 23, allegedly committed suicide by jumping into the Sukhna Lake last night. The body of the girl, Anjali Goyal, was recovered from the lake around midnight after the last tower location of Her father at the GMSH-16, where her postmortem was conducted on Tuesday. the girl's mobile phone was traced to the lake. Anjali had left her Mohali Phase 3B I residence at around 7 pm yesterday on her Activa scooter. She told her parents that she was going to a temple as she had kept a fast on Monday.

Employees of the UT Electricity Department went on a strike today, causing inconvenience to residents of various sectors due to long power cuts. Adding to their woes in this sultry weather, there was nobody to attend to their calls on helpline numbers.

Littering roads in Panchkula to cost residents dear

Littering roads and discharging water on streets in Panchkula will now cost residents dear. After being issued two notices for these violations, the defaulters will be asked to shell out Rs 500 and and for every subsequent violation, they will be fined Rs 1,000.

Irregularities have been found in a number of files pertaining to applications submitted by several residents for the sanction of building plans and completion certificates to the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) here.

Rain leaves city roads waterlogged
Chandigarh, July 30
Many parts in the city were waterlogged after the rain today. The worst affected were the southern sectors where most potholed roads and open spaces were waterlogged. Commuters had a tough time passing waterlogged roundabouts. Rainwater also accumulated in the Sector 46 market area and on the internal roads in Sector 47, 48, 49 and 51.

No relief from sultry weather
Chandigarh, July 30
City residents are not likely to get any relief from the blistering heat and humidity in the coming days as the Met Department does not have any good news about the active monsoon in the city. The department says there will be moderate rain in some areas in the coming week due to a weak monsoon. Even though there are the chances of the monsoon getting active by the second week of August, that will not improve the weather conditions much.

Hepatitis screening camp
On the occasion of the World Hepatitis Day, a free hepatitis screening camp was organised at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Sunday. A random screening was held on 125 attendants of the patients. There are quite a few viruses that cause hepatitis A, B, C & E. Most of the infections due to hepatitis A, E, are self-limiting but problem is with hepatitis B & C, which can cause long-term liver damage.Hepatitis B & C are silent killers like diabetes and hypertension.

Free scholarship test
Chandigarh: Bulls Eye conducted a free scholarship test at GGDSD College for CAT 14 MBA aspirants. Besides Chandigarh, this test was conducted at four more locations in the region - Ambala, Patiala, Ludhiana and Yamunanagar. In all, more than 1,200 MBA aspirants appeared for the test.

Panjab varsity wants student elections on September 4

Panjab University is going to recommend to the UT Administration September 4 as the date for student elections in the university and all city colleges. The decision was taken today at the all-student party meeting held on the PU campus.

PU takes U-turn, allows senior students to keep four-wheelers
Chandigarh, July 30
Almost three days after the Panjab University Syndicate gave a nod to amend the hostel rules and decided that no resident would be allowed to keep four-wheelers in hostels, the university authorities took a U-turn over the decision to impose a ban on vehicles in hostels. The university has decided that the senior most students will be allowed to keep the vehicles in the hostels according to the parking space available.

118 cancer patients benefit from CM’s Relief Fund in Ropar

As many as 118 cancer-stricken patients have been provided with financial aid of over Rs 82 lakh till now. The grant was disbursed among the patients under the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

Four get jail in murder bid case
Chandigarh, July 30
The Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge RK Yadav today sentenced four persons to three years' imprisonment in an attempt-to-murder case. The court sentenced liquor contractor Azad Singh, Manager Satinder and two workers Jatinder and Amit to five years in jail and also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 each on them.

A local court today framed charge of rape and kidnapping against a Sultanpur resident, Rajnath, alias Raju. The case was registered on April 30 when the accused kidnapped a 13-year-old girl living in his neighbourhood. — TNS
