Residents bear the brunt of power men’s strike

Employees of the UT Electricity Department went on a strike today, causing inconvenience to residents of various sectors due to long power cuts. Adding to their woes in this sultry weather, there was nobody to attend to their calls on helpline numbers.

Littering roads in Panchkula to cost residents dear
Panchkula, July 30
Littering roads and discharging water on streets in Panchkula will now cost residents dear. After being issued two notices for these violations, the defaulters will be asked to shell out Rs 500 and and for every subsequent violation, they will be fined Rs 1,000.

Irregularities found in GMADA files

Irregularities have been found in a number of files pertaining to applications submitted by several residents for the sanction of building plans and completion certificates to the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority
(GMADA) here.
Rain leaves city roads waterlogged
Chandigarh, July 30
Many parts in the city were waterlogged after the rain today. The worst affected were the southern sectors where most potholed roads and open spaces were waterlogged. Commuters had a tough time passing waterlogged roundabouts. Rainwater also accumulated in the Sector 46 market area and on the internal roads in Sector 47, 48, 49 and 51.

No relief from sultry weather
Chandigarh, July 30
City residents are not likely to get any relief from the blistering heat and humidity in the coming days as the Met Department does not have any good news about the active monsoon in the city. The department says there will be moderate rain in some areas in the coming week due to a weak monsoon. Even though there are the chances of the monsoon getting active by the second week of August, that will not improve the weather conditions much.

Hepatitis screening camp
On the occasion of the World Hepatitis Day, a free hepatitis screening camp was organised at the Government Medical College and Hospital
(GMCH) on Sunday. A random screening was held on 125 attendants of the patients. There are quite a few viruses that cause hepatitis A, B, C & E. Most of the infections due to hepatitis A, E, are self-limiting but problem is with hepatitis B & C, which can cause long-term liver damage.Hepatitis B & C are silent killers like diabetes and hypertension.

PU takes U-turn, allows senior students to keep four-wheelers
Chandigarh, July 30
Almost three days after the Panjab University Syndicate gave a nod to amend the hostel rules and decided that no resident would be allowed to keep four-wheelers in hostels, the university authorities took a U-turn over the decision to impose a ban on vehicles in hostels. The university has decided that the senior most students will be allowed to keep the vehicles in the hostels according to the parking space available.
