Science kits gather dust in govt schools
Jalandhar, July 28 While it has been more than two months since the kits first arrived at government schools, owing to lack of orders from the top, they presently lie untouched even as students needing equipment during practicals, suffer. While official reports say kits have been distributed in at least 21 schools, other school sources say they have been distributed in about 24 schools in addition. A science teacher in the district said, “The kits have been distributed in about 24 NABARD schools and an additional over 20 high schools which had received grants for labs under the RMSA (the scheme is for classes VIIth to Xth).” “While we fear the chemicals will all be spoiled by the time the directions are issued, right now we will have to make do with chemicals and equipment which is available. For practical work, students shall have to rely on the old stuff, until further instructions,” the teacher added. The science kits include chemicals, physics apparatus, charts, biological slides etc. Notably, the scam has also affected another aspect of school education. Grants - for the purchase of library books - worth Rs 10,000 to higher and secondary schools still lie unused with schools as they wait for instructions. District science supervisor Baljinder Singh, speaking on the issue of the science kits, said, “It is true that all the science kits received for this session lie unused. Twentyone schools had received science kits in May and June. Though it’s been about two to two-and-a-half months since the schools received these science kits, I don’t think there is as yet any fear of the chemicals going bad because they are of a good quality. These kits have mostly been received in high schools since their apparatus is suitable for classes up to Xth.” While practical classes in many of the schools have been held up due to the dearth of kits and equipment, sources revealed that in general as well, schools often have to face delay in receiving science equipment and solutions. Rural schools are especially hard hit. A teacher at a rural schools says, “Since the standard apparatus and solutions are available only in the cities, any delay in the science equipment or solutions being sent means we have to make a trip to the city to ensure that students get to attend proper classes. If the education department issues us equipment timely, it will save us time and inconvenient trips to the city.” |
City to get 6 more 66-kv sub-stations
Jalandhar, July 28 According to sources, the new sub-stations will be set up at Paragpur, falling under the Jalandhar cantonment assembly segment, Babrik Chowk in Jalandhar (West) and Focal Point, Industrial Area, Industrial Estate and Gadaipur falling in the Jalandhar (North) assembly segment. While Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) has already acquired land for setting up sub-stations at Paragpur and Babrik Chowk, the process for identifying proper land at four other places is on. The PSPCL has exchanged its land located in Beant Nagar with the Municipal Corporation (MC) in lieu of its land situated in Paragpur and Babrik Chowk for setting up the two sub-stations. Similarly, the PSPCL is identifying proper land for acquisition which is soon likely to be completed. Residents keep on facing power cuts due to local faults at regular intervals, but it is hoped that with the installation of these six power sub-stations in the city, the local faults in supplying power to the residents and the industrialists will be reduced a lot and they will get quality and assured power supply after their setting up, the sources added. |

After getting nod to lay inter-locking tiles in the Jalandhar (Central) assembly segment, the MC first chose those areas where road was in a dilapidated condition due to the accumulation of water during the rains. The MC laid inter-locking tiles at various potholed portions on the Ladowali road near the district administrative complex after preparing a proper base for that. The Ladowali road was badly damaged at several places during the rains and it was very difficult to notice pits and potholes, as several feet high water used to accumulate there during downpour.
