As easy as stroll in the park
Harare, July 28 Kohli, who scored 115 in the first one dayer, never looked troubled as he compiled 68 from 88 balls and led his team past their victory target of 184 with 87 balls to spare. Batting at number three, he was involved in successive 50-run partnerships with Ambati Rayudu (33) and Suresh Raina (28 not out) that ended Zimbabwe's hopes of defending the modest 183 they had posted in their innings. “With our early breakthroughs with the ball and consistent bowling throughout the innings, we did not let them get away with anything,” Kohli said. “I didn't think we had to seal the series today, we just had to play good cricket, if we execute properly we are going to end up on the winning side more often than not. “I have been hitting the ball sweetly for the last couple of months. It's all about taking responsibility, I am not worried about how much I score, I am more concerned about if I have put the team in a good position to win the game.” India won the toss and elected to field, hoping to get the most out of the early-morning moisture in the wicket. Zimbabwe were soon in trouble, losing two wickets with the same number of runs on the board, but a third wicket stand of 65 between Hamilton Masakadza (38) and Brendan Taylor (23) got them out of the early doldrums. They lost wickets at regular intervals after that though, with only Sean Williams (45) putting together an innings of any substance before he was needlessly run-out. Leg-spinner Amit Mishra was again the pick of the Indian bowlers as he collected four for 47 in his 10 overs, taking his tally for the series to nine at an average of 15. The tourists never looked troubled in their chase, though debutant Michael Chinouya removed Rohit Sharma (14) early on. That brought Kohli to the crease and his steady innings that included five fours and a six drained the hopes of the home side. “Our batting is getting quite frustrating now, leading up to the series, with the amount of work we put in, we are not seeing the results,” Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor said. “It is starting to be a little bit irritating. Guys need to have a look in the mirror and toughen up a bit. “We have lost the series but there are still two more games in Bulawayo and we have to keep our heads up.” The fourth ODI will be played on Thursday, with the final match of the series on Saturday. — Reuters Scoreboard India zimbabwe Man of the Match: Amit Mishra |
Won’t brush Dhoni issue under the carpet: Dalmiya
Kolkata, July 28 Dhoni found himself in the middle of a controversy when it came to light that he had 15 per cent stake in Rhiti Sports, which also manages Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja and Pragyan Ojha, apart from him. “I had said nothing will be swept under the carpet, even if it is Dhoni,” Dalmiya said after the Board's working committee meeting here on Sunday. The skipper came under sharp attack from many former cricketers for his alleged conflict of interest for having stakes in the sports management company and being the captain of the national side at the same time. Dalmiya said the board had changed its “mode of working” as far as keeping a check on players' conflict of interests was concerned. “We have changed our mode of working. We don't believe you have to be after any player or anybody. Therefore, the players will have to declare their interest in sports management companies. We will see how we can help them,” Dalmiya said. Talking about Delhi seamer Pradeep Sangwan, who has failed a random dope test conducted during the 2013 season of the IPL, Dalmiya said “the BCCI will follow the procedures as per anti-doping code”. Dalmiya also said that the annual contract for coaches and support staff for special academies has been renewed for one year. |
Pallekele, July 28 Batting first, South Africa made 238 all out in 48.4 overs. JP Duminy topscored with 97 runs while Hashim Amla made 77 runs to give a solid start. However, wickets tumbled after that and the whole team was out with just 238 on board. For hosts, Ajantha Mendis bagged four wickets by giving away 51 runs. Lasith Malinga bagged three wickets by giving away 52 runs. Tilakratne bagged two wickets. In reply, Sri Lanka reached home 239/2 with 36 balls remaining. Tilakratne remained unbeaten on 115 runs. Kumara Sangakkara scored 91 runs.Lahiru Thirimanne (1) too remained unbeaten.Man of the Match Dilshan said,"I took a lot of confidence from my bowling. Amla's wicket was very important for us, and we bowled really well after that. The plan was to see off the first few overs, rotate strike and then take chances. Scoring 30s and 40s no point for me." Brief scores: South Africa 238 off 48.4 overs (Duminy 97, Amla 77; A. Mendis 4-51); S Lanka 239-2 off 44 overs (T Dilshan 115 no, Sangakkara 91) — Agencies |
Pak-WI series to be probed: Report Karachi, July 28 Sethi said that the board had already contacted the International Cricket Council in this regard and discussed the media report. “We are in touch with the ICC on this matter and we have told them we need to clarify the situation,” he said. Sethi said hopefully the PCB and ICC would be able to issue official statements on the issue soon. The PCB caretaker chief also said he had spoken to the team management in the West Indies and advised the players to focus on ending the tour on a winning tour. British tabloid 'Daily Mail' has claimed in its report that suspicious betting patterns were identified during the five-match ODI series between Pakistan and West Indies, while unusually slow run-rates during certain overs followed by bursts of high scoring had set alarm bells ringing in the ICC. The report stated that “concerns were raised, in particular, around the tied third match of the series played in St Lucia a week ago on Friday, The second ODI, which saw Pakistan fail to score a run off the bat in the first five overs after being set 233 to win, will also be scrutinized by officers of the ICC Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU), the report said. A spokesman of the PCB when contacted confirmed the board had gone through the media report which was now reviewed by its legal advisors. “We are also looking at the report from a legal point of view to decide our future line of action and we are in touch with the ICC,” the spokesman said. Interestingly, a spokesman of the ICC told Geo News channel that he couldn't comment on the report. “The ICC as a rule does not comment on issues concerning the ASCU,” he said. — PTI |
Mo Farah sparkle at Diamond league
London, July 28 The British distance runner returned to the scene of his 5,000 metres and 10,000m Olympic gold-medal winning double triumph to win the 3,000m at the Diamond League meeting which was taking place to mark the anniversary of the 2012 Games. It set the 30-year-old, who also holds the world and European titles at 5,000m, up nicely for next month's world championships in Moscow. Farah hardly broke sweat as he thrilled the 60,000 crowd by bursting away from his rivals with over a lap to go and winning in a personal best time of seven minutes 36.85 seconds. “I am in great shape and ready for the worlds," Farah said. "I can't wait for them now after running here in front of this fantastic crowd. “The noise was just as good as a year ago with everyone shouting and it brought back all those memories. My twins were here so I had extra motivation to win," explained Farah, whose wife was pregnant when he won his two Olympic gold medals. American David Oliver won an eventful men's 110m hurdles, taking advantage of compatriot Aries Merritt, the world record holder and Olympic champion, clipping a hurdle and pulling up early. Michael Tinsley, also of the US, just missed out on breaking his own world leading time when he won the men's 400m hurdles in 47.98 secs. Tinsley, who ran 49.96 sec in Des Moines last month, said: “It was a really tough race but the crowd pulled me through. I just want to stay fit and stay focused for the Worlds." Kenya's Brimin Kipruto pipped compatriot Gilbert Kirui in the 3000m steeplechase, running 8:06.86secs while aother Kenyan, Augustine Choge, ran a personal best in the Emsley Carr Mile of 3:50.01. Usain Bolt anchored the Jamaica 4x100m relay team to victory in a meeting record of 37.75sec. — Agencies |
Punjab emerge winners in Federation Cup hockey
New Delhi, July 28 Both sides were tied 1-1 at the end of full time and the game was decided by penalty shootout. Punjab won 5-4. Both sides fought very hard and there was little between the two sides to choose. At half time the match was evenly poised as both sides failed to find the back of the net. UP took the lead in the 45th minute though a penalty corner goal from Diwakar Ram. But Punjab was quick to reply, scoring the equaliser in the 51st minute through a Rajin Khandulna goal. For Punjab Ajay Kumar, Parvinder Singh, Lakhwinder Singh and Ajit Pandit converted their respective penalty strokes, whereas Amandeep Singh missed his shot. Pratinder Singh and Sarabjit Singh missed their penalty strokes for UP and this cost them the title. Jagwant Singh, Pramod Kumar and Diwakar Ram found the net in the shootout. — PTI |
Budapest, July 28 “This is probably one of the most important grand prix wins of my career,” Hamilton told the crowd after his fourth win at the Hungaroring circuit in seven years but his first with a team other than McLaren. “I could not be happier. I hope there is plenty more to come. We have to work hard but if we can make the tyres last here we can do it anywhere.” Kimi Raikkonen, who could be Vettel’s team mate next season, took second place for Lotus — 10.9 seconds behind Hamilton — after doing one stop fewer and holding off the German in the tense closing laps to the delight of thousands of Finns in the crowd. “I told Kimi I was not happy but he was laughing. That’s racing,” Vettel, who had complained over the radio after one failed attempt to pass that Raikkonen had not given him enough room, said with a smile. Hungary marked the midpoint in the season and after 10 of the 19 races Vettel goes into the August break with 172 points to Raikkonen’s 134. Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso lost ground and now has 133 after finishing fifth. Hamilton is on 124. Hamilton, the 2008 world champion who won in Hungary for McLaren last season, led from pole position on a day when track temperatures reached 50 degrees Celsius to secure the 22nd win of his career. “I was hungry for it today, I was going all out,” said the Briton, who joins now-retired predecessor Michael Schumacher as the only drivers to have won four times in Hungary. The Briton had started on pole for the third race in a row and made a good start while team mate Nico Rosberg, who retired with flames shooting out of the rear of his car four laps from the end, plunged from fourth to 12th after one lap. Paul Di Resta and Adrian Sutil of Force India finished 10th and 11th respectively. — Reuters Hungarian GP result

Mandeep biding her time
Chandigarh, July 28 While her peer Ashwini Akkunji has wrested back her place in the relay team, Mandeep still has a long way to go. The ignominy of a doping ban may have just got over, but Mandeep is now coming out of a career threatening injury. She has undergone the rehabilitation and started light training sessions. "Just after the Commonwealth Games I suffered a hip bone injury and kept writhing in pain for months. For one whole year I was visiting AIIMS, Delhi for treatment. It was very painful. I was not sure whether I would be able to come back on the track again. But now I have recovered completely. Though the pain has gone now, doctors have advised me to be careful for a couple months. I have started light training and it is feeling good to be back on the track once again," Mandeep along with Ashwini Akkunji, Sini Jose, Mary Tiana Thomas, Priyanka Pawar and Juana Murmu had failed a dope test in 2011, followed by a two-year ban. With the competition growing in the 4x400m event, there may be serious questions whether she would be able to make a comeback. The 400m runner sounds dead sure. "I will come out even better than what I was two years ago (51.74 seconds)," the 2006 Doha and 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games gold medalist (4x400) says. Regarding her two years in wilderness, the 26-year-old said, "It was destiny so what could I do. I don't want to live in the past. Already a lot of time has gone by, I want to be back as soon as possible," adding that she did not take part in the trials for the World Championship as she didn't feel fully fit. "As there are no big events in the near future I thought I'd wait for a year and then make a comeback," the 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medalist said, revealing that she might go to foreign country for training. |

Dortmund, July 28 In a hugely entertaining encounter on a scorchingly hot Dortmund evening between the two teams who contested the Champions League final two months ago, Dortmund looked to have lost none of their sharpness. Bayern were badly missing injured winger Franck Ribery and keeper Manuel Neuer, while new transfer from Dortmund, Mario Goetze, was also out injured. "It was a great game," Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp said. "Three weeks of preparation, a few injured players, a couple of weeks before the season starts and everyone playing like there is no tomorrow." Japan beat South Korea to win East Asian Cup
Seoul: Yoichiro Kakitani scored an injury-time winner for his second goal of the match as Japan beat hosts South Korea 2-1 to win the East Asian Cup in Seoul on Sunday. Japan topped the four-nation tournament with a total of seven points, two ahead of China in second spot with South Korea on third with two and Australia finishing last with one point. Barcelona: American swimming great Michael Phelps turned up to watch the world championships in Barcelona with his foot in a hefty support brace after injuring it on the golf course. "It's just a fracture nothing bad, we're being very cautious right now," Phelps, who retired after last year's London Olympics, said in an interview posted on the website of swimming governing body FINA on Sunday. "So I guess it is true you can get hurt on the golf course," added the 28-year-old Baltimore native, who won 18 Olympic golds and 26 world championship titles in his glittering career. He did not elaborate on how he sustained the fracture. — Reuters |
German eves beat Norway to win European C’ship Stockholm, July 28 Germany recorded a fourth European final victory over Norway, who had a goal ruled out for offside in the match. Underdogs Norway pressed Germany from the start, and missed a golden opportunity to go ahead on the half-hour mark when Trine Ronning missed a spot-kick. Ronning fired straight down the middle, but despite diving to her left, Germany captain Angerer managed to flick out a foot to keep her effort out. Germany replaced Lena Lotzen with Mittag at halftime, and within four minutes she broke the deadlock. Norway were thrown a lifeline when the referee awarded them a second penalty but Angerer, who conceded just a single goal in six matches at Euro 2013, kept the spot kick out. Despite plenty of late pressure from Norway, Germany held on to secure their eighth European women's championships win. |
