Bhakra power unit has major upgrade

The right side power plant of the Bhakra Beas Management Board at Bhakra has already upgrade the units by 31 per cent, which was the highest in India while at left power plant, the second phase of upgrade of 20 per cent was under process and thus this will become the first power house in the world to add 40 per cent in its capacity through upgrading.

This was stated by Bhakra Beas Management Board, Chairman AB Agrawal while inaugurating an interactive workshop on Operation and Maintenance (O&M) and Renovation, Modernisation, Uprating and Life Extension (RMU & LE) of Hydro Power Plants organised by CBIP last week at New Delhi.

Agrawal said that for good plant availability best O&M practices were to be adopted.

Further, as it was difficult to add new hydro capacity, capacity additions by way of RM&U and Life Extension was the option.

He also stated that the Bhakra Beas Management Board was pioneer in upgrading of hydro plants. Bhakra Beas Management Board share in upgrading was 311 MW which was 61 per cent of India’s total upgrading of 513 mW.

Mass marriages solemnised in Fatehgarh Sahib

Fatehgarh Sahib, June 26
Nishkam Kirtan Sewa Society, a social organisation of the district organised a mass marriages of five poor and needy girls at Mandi Gobindgarh town today. Arun Sekhri, Deputy Commissioner, was the chief guest and blessed the newly wedded couples. He also handed over the house hold goods of daily need to the newly wedded.

Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Commissioner said to tie the knot of poor girls is one of the divine donations. He said he would recommend the name of Society for the State award.

Karamjit Singh Bitoo highlighted the achievements of the society, he said till today the society has tied the knot of 166 needy couples besides this society is running free tailoring and embroidery training school for girls, so that they may become self sufficient, the society donates tri cycles to handicapped, sewing machines to widows, donates books and fees for the study of poor and deserving students.

Two arrested for smuggling diesel

Dera Bassi, June 26
The Lalru police has arrested two persons for smuggling diesel from near Handesra here today. Sources said the police set up a check point on tip-off near Handesra and stopped a three-wheeler from which 600 litres of smuggled diesel was recovered.

The police has registered a case against the accused Amichand, a resident of Borakhera in Haryana and Manoj Kumar, a resident of Raiwali in Haryana under Sections 379 and 411.

The police said that both the accused have been arrested.

Sources said that the accused have admitted that they were involved in the selling of diesel on exorbitant rates after purchasing it on cheaper rates from different places. All the accused would be presented before a local court on Thursday, the sources added.

Banur accident victim succumbs to injuries

Banur, June 26
A JE of the Electricity Department, Subash Chand, who was injured in a road accident on June 9 near Banur, succumbed to his injuries today at a hospital in Mohali. His body was handed over to relatives after conducting the postmortem examination at the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi.

The police said the victim was seriously injured after being hit by a truck on the Rajupura-Banur road on June 9. He was rushed to a hospital in Mohali where he succumbed to his injuries here today.

Subash was posted as a JE in the electricity office at Banur.

The police has registered a case against truck driver.

Three youths held for raping minor

Chandigarh, June 26
Three youths have been arrested after a Maloya-based 14-year-old girl alleged that she was gang-raped by them on June 19. The girl was known to one of the youths, Sunny, who allegedly took her to Sector 17 and introduced her to two of his friends, Satpal and Rishi. The girl reported that the three took her to a hotel in Attawa and gang-raped her. They also threatened her not to inform anyone about the incident.

Rishi is pursuing a course in hotel management, while Satpal and Sunny are students of civil engineering. The medical examination of the girl confirmed that she was raped. All the accused were sent to judicial custody.

Three nabbed with cartridges near HC

The UT police arrested three youths from a car near the Punjab and Haryana High Court along with two live cartridges. The police arrested Dinesh Kumar and Sanjeev Kumar, residents of Shimla, and Sandeep Kumar, a Dhanas resident.

A case under Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act has been registered at the Sector 3 police station. The car (number HP-03T-4313) has been impounded.

The police said Dinesh and Sanjeev had come to meet Sandeep and were spotted speeding away in their car at the High Court, not paying heed to the police signals.

They were ultimately stopped and a search revealed that they had two live cartridges in their vehicle. The three have been sent to judicial custody.

Bag containing pistol stolen from car

Unidentified miscreants stole a bag containing Rs 3 lakh, a .32 bore pistol, three ATM cards and one wrist watch from a Land Rover parked in Sector 35-D market. The car belonged to a Punjab resident, Sukhwinder Singh.

He reported to the police that miscreants broke the left side windowpane to steal the items.

The Chandigarh Police has registered a case.

Contractor arrested in graft case

Chandigarh, June 26
The Vigilance Cell of the UT police arrested a contractor while taking bribe of Rs 2,000 from a tube-well operator of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. The police arrested Sukhdev Singh, supervisor at Envirocure Projects (p) Ltd Health care, Sector 35, while he was accepting the bribe from Madan Lal, a tube-well operator with the public health department.

The complainant, a daily wager, said he and other 350 operators were made to pay Rs 1,380 of their monthly salary of Rs 6,883 to the contractor through the supervisor.

The bribe amount was recovered from Sukhdev’s possession. He was booked on the charges of extortion and corruption under Sections 384 and 120-B of the IPC and 13(1)(d) of the PC Act. The police said the possibility of involvement of higher-ups could not be ruled out.

Sagar beats Calvin to enter semis

Top seed Sagar Bains surged ahead and booked his place in the semifinals of the boys’ (U-14) category during the ongoing CLTA-AITA Talent Series Tennis Tournament, being held at the CLTA Courts here today. He defeated Calvin Golmei by 6-2 and 6-2. In another semifinal match of the same category, Ishaan Anirudh Sethi had a three-setter win against Sahishnu Sharma by 3-6, 6-3 and 6-3.

In the final round of boys’ (U-18) category, second seed Ranjeet Singh defeated Vikas Berwal at 6-1, 6-4 while qualifier Qamar Faisal made a upset with overcoming sixth seed Jagtar Singh. Qamar lost the first at 6-7 bounced back in other two sets to upset Jagtar at 6-4 and 6-2.

In the girls’ (U-18) category matches, second seed Gayatri Kumaraiah defeated Aashi Gupta 6-2, 6-1. Top seed Rajbeer Kaur beat Bhavya Wadhawan at 6-4, 6-2 while Nikita Bishnoi defeated Aastha Malhotra by 7-5 and 6-1. In girls’ (U-14) category matches, top-seed Prinkle Singh registered a one-sided win over Prakriti Bainwani. She bagged the match at 6-1, 6-0 to face Seerat Sidhu in the final. Sidhu defeated Rubani Ahluwalia at 6-1, 6-1. Second seed Ishita Parikh defeated Tanya Batra at 6-2 and 6-2 while Bani Singh had a straight set win over Prakashan Abhirani 6-1, 6-4.

In-form player and sixth seed Rishabh Sharda upset his practice partner second seed Sabrang Sandal with bag the game at 6-2, 5-7 and 6-4. He will face third seed Gurjot Singh in the final of the category. Gurjot defeated Aditya Vashist at 6-3, 6-4. Top seed Hardeep Singh defeated Paramveer Bajwa in a one-sided match at 6-3, 6-3 to face Allan Johnson who after losing the first set at 6-7 defeated the CLTA trainee Pranav Suri.

City team storm into cricket final

Chandigarh, June 26
Local cricket team (registered with the Haryana Cricket Association) booked their berth in the final of ongoing Inter-District Cricket Tournament for Boys (U-14) after defeating Rohtak, today. The tournament is being organised by the Haryana Cricket Association at the Ch. Bansi Lal Cricket Stadium, Lali.

In the semifinals, the local team defeated Rohtak by five wickets. The team will now face Gurgaon, in the final of the tournament.

After electing to bat first, the local side restricted the rivals at a mere total of 40 runs. The batting side failed to face the bowling spell of Chandigarh blowers and lost their wickets on regular interval.

Prince (3 for 7) and Amit Thapa (3 for 7) were the main wicket takers for the team while Prithvi Lohtiya (2 for 5) and Vivek (2 for 9) were the other claimers of bowling staff. For the batting side, Shivamm Bhardwaj 8 runs knock was the only highest contribution.

In reply, the local side achieved the target in the 20th over with Prithvi Lohtiya scoring 12 runs. He was equally supported by Manan Chadha (7 runs) and Vivek (5 runs). For the bowling side, Neeraj Rathi (3 for 10) was the only main wicket taker.

CCA win by 3 wickets

The Chandigarh Cricket Academy (CCA) defeated the Delhi Cricket Club by 3 wickets in the second North-Zone Cricket Tournament organised by the Vivek High Asian Cricket academy, here.

Batting first, the visiting side set a target of 144 runs for 6 in 20 overs. Narendar Kanyal played an unbeaten knock of 48 runs while Shanbaz Raza Khan contributed 26 runs in team’s total. Sudhakar (16 runs) and Vikash (14 runs) were the other main contributors. For the bowling side, Deepanshu claimed 3 for 26 while Jaswant bagged 2 for 22.

In reply, the wining side posted 146 runs in 18.2 overs with Rahul (43 runs) and Rajneesh (41 runs) scoring lion’s share. Jaswant contributed 18 runs.

For the bowling side, Prabhat Sharma,Shivam Sharma and Sudhakar claimed two wickets each. Rahul (43 runs) of the Chandigarh Cricket Academy was adjudged as man of the match.
