Undertrial escapes once again
Amritsar, June 19 Besides Sukhbir Singh, the three policemen accompanying him were booked. The three policemen were placed under suspension. They were identified as head constable Jaswinder Singh, head constable Gurmel Singh and head constable Balbir Singh, all posted at Kapurthala. Sub-Inspector Sukhwant Singh, posted at the Police Lines, Kapurthala, stated to the Jandiala police that Sukhbir Singh, who originally hailed from Bhuse village, Sarai Amanat Khan in Tarn Taran district, was lodged in Kapurthala Jail. Yesterday, he was brought to Amritsar for producing him before the Judicial Magistrate (First Class) in connection with his earlier escape from Amritsar Central Jail. He said the police brought him in a private vehicle. While returning when they reached near Jandiala bus stand, Sukha asked for water while saying that he was feeling thirsty. As the policemen stopped the vehicle, Sukha, who was handcuffed, pushed them aside and escaped. He said though the policemen chased him, but they failed to arrest him as he merged in the crowed. Sukha, who was involved in the smuggling of heroin and counterfeit currency from across India-Pakistan border, went missing from inside jail on January 18, 2012. A case under Sections 222, 223, 224, 225-A and 120-B of the IPC was registered against him at the Cantonment police station when the search operation launched by the jail authorities could not locate him. He was again arrested by the State Special Operation Cell in April, 2012 with a consignment of 5 kg heroin. His interrogation had revealed that he had escaped through the gate of Amritsar Central Jail. After his escape he had revived his links with his counterparts in Pakistan. |
Milk gets dearer by
Rs 2 per litre
Amritsar, June 19 Both the unions had hiked the milk rates following a mutual agreement over a month ago. However, differences arose between these unions over pricing. Eventually, the district administration intervened in the matter as Deputy Commissioner Rajat Aggarwal appointed a two-member committee to mediate between the two groups. One of the committee members Deputy Director (Dairy) Kashmir Singh said the quality of milk was kept uppermost in deciding the issue. With the recent rise in milk prices the residents will have to shell out Rs 2 extra per litre on loose milk. Consequently, its impact will be seen on the rates of curd, cheese, ghee and khoya in the open market. A resident of Guru Nanak Nagar, Surinder Kumar, said the hike in the milk prices would stretch their domestic budget, which was already reeling under inflation. He said it was just a few days back that the rate of petrol was increased. He said it was a welcome step that the district administration intervened, but many shopkeepers had already increased the prices of milk, curd and other dairy products. He added that when the government was providing various subsidies on cattle-rearing, it should also keep a check on its price hike, which is more a marketing gimmick. A housewife, Amarjeet Kaur, said the hike in the prices of milk would affect the kitchen budget of common people. She said providing food and education was becoming expensive for middle and lower middle class families. Members of both unions maintained that the demand for milk was rising day by day, but the supply was not increasing in consonance. Besides, at the same time the cost of transport and other labour costs go up very often. They said the government should look for measures to increase its supply and put a tab on its input cost to ensure adequate supply to meet the rising demand. |
Probe ordered into SHO’s role in illegal detention of minor girl
Amritsar, June 19 According to information, the 16-year-old girl had allegedly eloped with her boyfriend, who was accompanied by a friend, on June 14. Hardip Singh, father of the girl and resident of Chowk Chira, complained to the police that his daughter went missing after she had gone to the market for procuring some domestic items. He lodged a complaint against Germanjit Singh and Mittu, both residents of Gurdaspur, while alleging that they had abducted her after alluring her for marriage. The police immediately swung into action and recovered the girl and arrested the two youths on June 16. However, the girl refused to go to her parents' house, it is learnt. The parents of the girl approached senior police officials while alleging that she was kept in illegal detention and was not being handed over to the family by Jarnail Singh, the SHO. They alleged that the police was pressurising them to reach a compromise with the alleged abductors. A police party, headed by an ADCP-level officer, conducted a raid on the police station and recovered the girl from the premises. Now, the police has registered a case under Sections 366-A and 34 of the IPC against the two youths. Dr Kaustubh Sharma, DCP, said Jarnail Singh had been attached to the Police Lines till the investigations were underway. He said there was some delay in the registration of case, besides the girl was also not produced in the court in time. He said the girl had eloped with her boyfriend and was not willing to go to her parents. He said an inquiry had been marked to the ACP (Central) to find out the role of SHO Jarnail Singh. He said the girl had been sent to Nari Niketan after producing her in the court. |
‘Enemmy’ star cast, director come calling to
Amritsar
Amritsar, June 19 The recent film to bear the brunt of the Censor Board is
Enemmy, produced by Mithun Chakraborty and a comeback film of his son
Mimoh. Suniel Shetty, who stars in the film, was in Amritsar along with actor Yuvika Chaudhary and director Ashoo
Trikha. The trio visited the Golden Temple and talked about the film and dealing with the censor controversy, just before its release this Friday. “The film is a psychological thriller with action packed sequences. It is a cop drama, with underworld, politics and the system all intertwined into the story and focuses on the underbelly of the corrupt system,” said Ashoo
Trikha. Suniel Shetty, KK Menon, Johny Lever and Mimoh play cops in the film and Yuvika Chaudhary plays the female lead. While the movie is another attempt by Mahaakshay to make a comeback into Bollywood, it is also a comeback for Shetty in the action-genre. But the actor seems upset over the Censor issue the film had to deal with. “Despite the fact that the film does not promote or contain any objectionable or obscene content, we have been given an A certification. The reason is that the board thought the concept behind the film was objectionable. So, now even the thought behind a film needs to censored. This could be frustrating for anyone,” said
Shetty. Claiming that this would be the cleanest adult film ever, Shetty and Trikha both said they were being targeted. “There are films which are full of vulgar double -meaning dialogues, nudity and objectionable content and they are running without any certification specified. Our film shows the dark realities like drug trafficking, tobacco lobbying and monetary frauds. Why not let the audiences decide if the film is objectionable or not? We have decided to release the film with the A Certificate, but it definitely dissolves our audiences,” said
Trikha. Enemmy has earlier too got into trouble with the Censor over the lyrics of a song which mentions names of actresses
Kareena, Bipasha, Katrina and Priyanka. "The board wanted us to get a NOC from all four actors but later cleared it," said
Trikha. Shetty, however, felt that this action had put the filmmakers back against the wall. “Mithun Da was supposed to be here, promoting the film. Instead, he is dealing with the unexpected Censor issues. Since this is his maiden production, he feels a bit disappointed.” Meanwhile, the film is a story of five cops, who are put to test while investigating disappearance of huge amounts of money involving a nexus between political and underworld king pins. “It is a story of emotions, struggle between power and duty, right or wrong, friends and foes. It is a fast paced action thriller with constant cat and mouse chase between the characters and has good story,” says
Shetty. Yuvika plays a housewife in the film and is hopeful that despite its troubles, the film will impress the audiences. Ask Shetty as to who the real Enemmy in the film is and he is cheeky in saying, “As for now, it is the Censor Board.” |

City tops the chart in blood donation
Amritsar, June 19 As per the estimates, about 90 lakh units are required in the country annually while just 60-70 lakh units are collected. Out of this, only 50 per cent of the total blood donors contribute voluntarily while the remaining are replacement blood donors or family members of a patient. Dr Arun, who is in charge of blood donation campaign in the district, said AIDS control Society, in its recently released data, revealed that Amritsar had topped the state as far as blood donation was concerned. He said during the year, about 24,000 units of blood had been donated by various donors in Guru Nanak Dev Hospital (GNDH) alone, while the remaining 5,000 units of blood were collected at Jallianwala Bagh Memorial Civil Hospital. He said 2,000 blood donors had donated blood in the past one month in GNDH while 415 donors donated blood at Civil Hospital. In Punjab, over 16,000 blood donors had donated blood during 260 blood donation camps. Dr Arun said in order to encourage voluntary blood donation, the district administration had been organising blood donation camps every month. He said various departments, colleges, Nehru Yuva Kendra and NGOs had been associated in the programme to make more and more people aware about blood donation, which was the need of the hour. He said voluntary blood donors were the safest blood donors who did not carry any transfusion or transmissible infections. If only 15-20 per cent of people in the country donated blood, it would be enough to meet the annual requirements. |
