SPURIOUS DRUGS SCAM
Srinagar, May 27 The court also directed the IGP, Kashmir, to constitute a special team to execute the fresh non-bailable warrants against the six other accused in the case, including the director of Dehradun-based Sanative Pharmaceuticals who neither surrendered nor were represented by any lawyer before the court today. On April 24, the court had issued non-bailable warrants against the 15 accused in the case, and directed the police to arrest and produce the accused by May 27. Under the J&K Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1940, the TADA court in Srinagar is also a designated court to hear complaints related to spurious and adulterated drugs in Kashmir. As the matter came up before TADA Judge MI Qureshi, MD of Medley Pharmaceuticals Surinder Sharma, who is the accused number nine in the case, surrendered before the court and also filed a regular and interim bail application through his lawyer Manzoor A Dar. The accused number 10-14, including the proprietor of Affy Parenterals, moved an undertaking before the court through their lawyer, praying for exemption from today’s proceedings while promising that they would surrender before the next date of hearing. Counsel Mussavir Joo, Special Public Prosecutor representing the complainant, Drugs and Food Control Organisation (DFCO) of J&K, however opposed the grant of bail to the MD of Medley Pharmaceuticals on many grounds. After hearing all the sides, the TADA court issued production warrants against three accused persons Akhil Gadoo, Amardeep Raina and Ashok Kumar Raina of the prime accused firm, Life Line Pharmaco Surgicals. The three are already under arrest. The court also directed the IGP, Kashmir, to constitute a special team for executing fresh non-bailable warrants against the six other accused in the case, including the director of Sanative Pharmaceuticals, who neither surrendered nor were represented by any lawyer before the court today. The court also granted interim bail to the MD of Medley Pharmaceuticals against a surety bond of Rs 1 lakh till the next date of hearing, fixed for June 24.

Eight-day judicial remand for suspect in train fire case
Jammu, May 27 The SIT has been assigned the job to probe the fire incident and the forensic team has taken samples from the burnt bogies of both trains. “Ajay Kumar, son of Rajinder Sharma, a resident of house number 133, Nangloi, New Delhi, was taken into custody when he was sitting inside the train which caught fire. We have taken his judicial remand and the SIT is investigating the matter,” Shiv Kumar, Senior Superintendent of Police Railways, told The Tribune. The SIT, being headed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Railways, Param
Vir Singh, has started investigations. On Sunday, after the fire incident, divisional traffic manager Jammu, Ram Nath Meena, had termed this as a militant activity but police rejected his theory. It was around 3.30 pm on Sunday that the Jammu-New Delhi Shalamar Express caught fire when it was standing on the central track of the Jammu railway station. Two hours after the incident, another train, Jammu-Bombay-Ahmedabad, Ahmedabad Express caught fire and it was only after 12 fire tenders were pressed into service that the fire was doused. SSP Shiv Kumar put his men on service at the platform. The fire incident has again brought to the fore the need to have a fire station at Jammu railway station as fire tenders were called from outside to douse the fire. Jammu railway station is one of the busiest railway stations in north India where thousands of people including Shri Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrims board and alight from trains. This is not the first time that trains have caught fire at Jammu railway station. In March 2011, two trains caught fire within 20 minutes. This time, the time gap was around two hours. |

Ground now smooth for AFSPA revocation: Soz
Srinagar, May 27 “Earlier I had said the Chief Minister cannot do it (take decision) alone as there are many stakeholders, including the Army and paramilitary forces. I feel that the discussion has been completed and as per my opinion and also as the state Congress president I feel the ground is smooth for AFSPA to go from some parts,” Soz told reporters on the sidelines of a function held at the JKPCC headquarters. Also calling for the revocation or amendment of the Public Safety Act (PSA), he went on to say that AFSPA was a ‘temporary law’ and it had to go one day. “However, AFSPA shouldn’t be made into a political issue or a topic for public debate… it was needed before but not now. Omar Abdullah is the head of the Unified Command and he can raise the issue there,” Soz added. He made the comments a day after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had stated that the National Conference (NC) and the Congress were on the “same page” over the controversial AFSPA revocation issue. When asked if Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would invite separatists for talks during his scheduled visit here next month, Soz said the PM had kept the door open for talks with separatists and they should come forward. Stating that a dialogue process would resolve all issues, he said he was ready to facilitate the Centre-separatist dialogue. On senior NC leader Mustafa Kamal’s reported statement that the Prime Minister was coming to the state to “kill time”, he avoided a direct reaction. “If you feel that a statement is acceptable, you should accept it…. If you feel the statement is foolish, it should be called foolish.” Reiterating that the Congress would emerge as the single largest party in the 2014 Assembly elections, he urged the people especially from downtown Srinagar to take part in the electoral process. Soz promised that no rigging would take place in the elections and democracy would be “completely restored” with the participation of people who had so far abstained from the process. He said the Congress would take a call on any alliance during the time of elections. |

Army man becomes first Kashmiri to scale Mt Everest
Srinagar, May 27 Rafiq, who is currently posted in the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (JAKLI) regiment of the Indian Army, along with his four group members from various states of India reached the top of Mount Everest on May 20. His team was a part of the first-ever National Cadet Corps (NCC) expedition to the mountain. They left India for the expedition on April 4. Rafiq belonged to the second group of the 13-member team which achieved the feat on May 20 and returned to the base camp on May 21. The NCC team’s expedition to Mount Everest coincided with the diamond jubilee celebrations of scaling the Everest. Edmund Percival Hillary and Tenzing Norgay first reached the mountain top 60 years ago. The team had earlier been part of an extensive training at Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Darjeeling, and participated in two expeditions to Mount Deo Tibba and Mount Kamet. The team underwent a winter acclimatisation training at Siachen Glacier before embarking on the mission. Earlier in 2011, Rafiq became the first person from Kashmir to climb Manaslu, an 8,000-m peak. The same year, Rafiq joined the best mountaineers from the country for the NCC Everest expedition 2013. He took part in basic and advance courses in mountaineering warfare and winter warfare courses in High Altitude Warfare School in Gulmarg. Rafiq’s feat has brought laurels to the Valley. “We are really proud of this young man. By scaling the Mount Everest, Rafiq has proved to be an inspiration for many young adventure sports enthusiasts, especially mountaineers and trekkers who wish to take up this activity as a profession. We are blessed to be surrounded by mountains from all the sides --- Mount Apharwat in the west, Mount Kolahoi in the east, Mount Harmukh in the north and Mount Tatakoti in the south. Our boys, therefore, have a lot scope to get themselves acquainted with the skills of mountaineering,” Rauf tramboo, a veteran mountaineer said. He said he had learnt about Rafiq from some Delhi-based mountaineers who had said he was a promising adventure sports athlete.

Post-quake, ‘unsafe’ house collapses due to rain in Bhaderwah
Jammu, May 27 Even though the house was declared unsafe, due to non-availability of relief the family had no option but to continue living in the structure. A bed room, a shop and a bathroom was damaged in the incident. It sent alarm bells in the area as most of the houses were declared unsafe. “Due to non-availability of relief from the administration, we had no option but to live in the house. Not even a single tent was given to us by the authorities. We are arranging for shelter on our own,” said Sayeeda Peer, wife of Showkat Hussain. The family was at a local mosque, attending a religious sermon when the house collapsed. People living in the vicinity expressed resentment over the administration’s behaviour towards the affected families. “No one from the administration visited the site to asses the damage. There is a possibility that other houses may also collapse. The problem needs to be addressed,” said Muhammad Ashraf Butt, sarpanch of Sartingal village. The rainfall also damaged crops in the Doda-Bhaderwah region and many roads are still blocked due to the landslide which took place last night. |

One more girl records statement against ‘rapist’ dervish
Srinagar, May 27 Budgam Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Uttam Chand confirmed that a fifth girl had recorded her statement against the dervish. “One more girl has recorded her statement,” the SSP said, refusing to reveal the girl’s age. Gulzar Ahmad Bhat, a resident of Shamsabad in Budgam district, was arrested by the police last week on charges of raping four minor girls. Bhat, who was pretending to be a mystic, was arrested when four of his disciples recorded statements before the police accusing him of sexual exploitation. All the four girls were below the age of 18 and the youngest victim was a 14-year-old girl from south Kashmir. The police had earlier said they had been contacted by five more girls who were willing to record their statements against the fake dervish. It was not immediately clear whether the girl who recorded the latest statement was from the group of the five who had contacted the police. Bhat was operating a bogus seminary for girls in Budgam district and faking to be a mystic for nearly a decade. In recent years, Bhat had become a frequent speaker on local cable channels delivering lectures on religion and mysticism. Several of Bhat’s accomplices have been detained, but police has not revealed the exact figures saying it may hamper the investigation process. |
