Traffic jams test commuters’ patience

New Delhi, May 20
Delhiites having their workplaces in Connaught Place and nearby areas had a harrowing time today due to the slow traffic movement and jams at India Gate and surrounding areas. The entire area around Hyderabad House near the India Gate Hexagon Road was barricaded due to the Chinese Premier Li Keqiang’s visit.

Traffic on Prithviraj Road and other roads leading to India Gate moved at a snail’s pace in the morning.

People reached their offices late. As the traffic was totally stopped, people were seen sitting on the lawns. They had to wait for more than an hour to go to their destinations. Buses were diverted from India Gate.

T. Malik who has her office on Barakhamba Road reached one hour late. She said that the authorities concerned should sufficiently publicise the diversion and closure of roads so that people could avoid them.

Harinder Singh who has a motor parts shop in Karol Bagh said he reached his workplace about half an hour late. He had to change many roads in order to come to Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg.

Commuters complain that the police do not plan properly about the routes whenever a foreign VIP visits Delhi. The local people suffer as a consequence.

Those who travel in Metro trains also suffered as Race Course, Udyog Bhawan, Central Secretariat and Khan Market stations were closed from 8 am to 10 am.

New Delhi, May 20
A 17-year-old girl was allegedly drugged and raped after being kidnapped by three persons, including a juvenile, in the New Usmanpur locality of northeast Delhi, police said today.

The victim lives with her family in Jagjit Nagar. She alleges that two of the accused are her neighbours, who are brothers. The police arrested one of them, a 25-year-old man, while the other two accused are at large.

Investigators are trying to track them by using technical surveillance on their mobile phones.

The police learnt about the matter after the victim’s parents approached them. In her statement to the police, the victim claims that she was allegedly raped by the three accused, after they kidnapped her on Saturday.

“She was given a glass of water laced with sedatives. She fell conscious after drinking it. The accused then took her to an isolated area, where they raped her,” said a police officer, close to the investigation of the case.

The accused threatened her with dire consequences after she gained consciousness, according to the police. They then dropped her near her house.

The girl informed her parents about the incident on Sunday. Her father approached the police. She was taken to the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital in Dilshad Garden for a medical examination, which confirmed the crime.

A case under Indian Penal Code sections 376-2G (gangrape) and 328 (causing hurt by means of poison) of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act has been registered at the New Usmanpur police station.
