New Delhi, May 13
Still too early to gauge the ramifications of Delhi University’s (DU) new Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP), but the response that emerged from the first session of ‘Open Days’ held at Conference Centre opposite Arts Faculty today has bolstered the confidence of the administration.

The programme ‘Open Days’ is a two-day session organised on North Campus where students and parents can come up with queries.
A large number of students participated in the session today to get themselves acquainted with the new programme.

The participants said that the programme will give them the flexibility to take a break and then resume as and when it is convenient within a span of ten years of admission into the FYUP unlike the current education system.

“We were told here that we can continue our studies after a diploma with even a gap of five-six years. Two years are compulsory and then we can opt out if we desire,” said Dharampal a 12th class student of Kendriya Vidyalaya of RK Puram waiting for his results.

Dharampal who wants to have Mathematics as his major doesn’t bother when it comes to the implications of the increased cost and an added year at the graduation level with the impression that this will allow him to complete masters in one year.

Kanika Hooda, who had come to enquire about her niece’s admission, gave the thumbs-up to the FYUP. She said, “I’m very excited about the new programme. Little doubts that were there have been cleared today. My three daughters have studied from DU and even for the new venture, I’m hopeful that it will have positive outcome.”

Among those who were seated in the packed hall, there were some who had come assuming it to be the start of administrative procedure of admissions and felt the university should have issued an official public notification before the Open Days meant for clearing their confusion about the crucial transition to the four-year graduation mode.

More so, this being a university where students come from all parts of the country, said Harshvardhan Jha from Kolkata who missed the admission to English Honours last year. “I thought the admission has begun but I was told it is an interactive session. I’ll now have to stay back with my relatives until the admission is over,” he said.

SP Gupta from Mayur Vihar said, “My daughter wants to take admission in B.Com or BBA and I expected that today the forms for regular courses will be available but I’ll have to go back to office. They said it will start on June 5.”

Language teachers’ salaries hiked
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, May 13
The Delhi Cabinet today decided to raise the monthly remuneration of teachers deployed by language academies in government schools. It also approved retention of government accommodation by re-employed teachers.

While speaking to media after the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said that the city government had deployed Urdu, Punjabi and Sanskrit teachers from the language academies in the schools of the Directorate of Education as part of Language Development Programme.

The teachers were engaged on a part-time basis against the vacant sanctioned posts.

Later, they were appointed full-time in 2008. Their consolidated monthly remuneration was increased in July 2002, April 2005 and April 2007.

The government further hiked their emoluments in July 2008, consequent upon making them full-time language teachers against the vacant sanctioned posts on consolidated monthly remuneration.

The new remuneration for PGT was fixed at Rs 13,160 and for TGT Rs 11,140. The Cabinet has now decided to hike consolidated remuneration to Rs 23,265 and Rs 22,935 with immediate effect.

The Chief Minister also stated that the Cabinet has decided to allow the retention of government accommodation to all the retired re-employed teachers up to PGT level and Vice-Principals and Principals till they are re-employed.

She stated that the basis of the decision is that these teachers are being re-employed automatically for two years after their superannuation from the government service and they cannot be treated as on contract basis.

Desilting drains before monsoon poses challenge

New Delhi, May 13
With the approaching monsoon season, the issue of desilting of drains once again dominated the meeting of North Delhi Municipal Corporation with the Commissioner coming under flak for the slow pace of work.

Leader of the House Mahendra Nagpal, who demanded a detailed debate on the issue, said the speed of work was too slow to meet the deadline of May 31 to remove 13,000 metric tone of silt.

“We have just one super sucker machine being shared for 15 days each by North and South Corporation. Even the suction machines are just five. There is simply not enough time to complete the work before the rains,” Nagpal said.

Agreeing with him, Congress leader Mukesh Goel questioned the number of beldaars employed to complete the desilting work.

“For 104 wards, there are just 609 beldaars, which comes to just 4-5 workers for every ward. How are they expected to clean several kilometers worth of drains full of silt and garbage,” he asked.—PTI
