Investors cheated of crores
New Delhi, May 14 The police today announced that they arrested Vijay Kumar Sharma, identified as chairman of the JVG Group, on Monday at Bhairon Road in Delhi. They had been hunting for him in 10 cases of cheating. In January 1998, he was arrested from Mumbai after his group allegedly duped depositors. He was granted bail in June 1999. He again allegedly duped investors by promising them accommodation in 2005 and 2006. In April 2012, after the Supreme Court cancelled his bail plea, he went underground, but was arrested yesterday. In September 1989, Sharma launched his first company JVG. He entered the real estate business by developing “JVG Enclave”, a colony located on Noida-Dadri Road, which has been declared unauthorized by the Uttar Pradesh government, according to the police. “In the early 1990s, Sharma opened branches of his finance companies in several towns and villages. He followed this with an aggressive advertising by offering 30 per cent interest rate. Investors flocked to buy the company’s schemes and the deposit base soon crossed Rs 1,000 crore,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Ravindra Yadav. Sharma thereafter allegedly opened JVG Daily, a Hindi newspaper and Sandhya Times in Delhi and JVG Sandhya Prahari in Patna. He launched ‘JVG Departmental’ and opened stores in Chandigarh, Delhi, Patna, Varanasi and Ranchi. His company brought over 3,000 small firms under its control. “The major chunk of the JVG empire was created from fixed deposits received from the public,” said Yadav. According to the police, Sharma allegedly wanted to create a Rs 12,000-crore business empire, which included fields of power, hotels and aviation. Sharma told the police that before his arrest, he had acquired Orkay’s polyester yarn plant in March 1997. It was done through an agreement with the financial institutions led by IDBI and the Mehras, who controlled Orkay. According to the agreement, JVG had agreed to pay Rs 98 crore in cash to the Mehras. In March 1997, it had paid Rs 14 crore. JVG had to pay the second instalment by the end of September. When it didn’t pay up, the production at the plant was suspended in October 1997 and the agreement between the companies became void. In June 1997, the Securities Exchange Board of India had asked JVG Finance to refund Rs 45 crore, which it had raised on a public issue in March 1997. In October that year, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) banned JVG’s non-banking financial companies from accepting deposits from the public, as they were not following the RBI guidelines.

Boy’s eardrum ruptured as teacher slaps him
New Delhi, May 14 He has alleged that his physical training teacher slapped him in school, while he was playing with his friends. Shahil reached home and complained of pain in his ear. When his parents inquired about it, he replied that his teacher had slapped him. His father took him to the Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, where an examination confirmed that Shahil’s eardrum was ruptured. His father informed the police about the incident. The police questioned the teacher, Veer Singh, who said the school was closed for summer vacations and the management had organized a camp for students. Shahil had taken part in that camp. “While he was training students, he saw Shahil throwing mud at other students. He told Shahil not to do it, but he didn’t pay attention. He then scolded three other students who were also throwing mud. They said that it was Shahil who started it. Veer warned him and left. When he returned, he saw Shahil again throwing mud and this time, he slapped him,” said a police officer. |
Need to create safe environment for women: Sonia
New Delhi, May 14
Of course, it is not universal, but it is there widespread.” “It pains me that as a society, we have failed to counter it and create a safe environment where girls and women can live and flourish without the fear of abuse and molestation,” she said. She said while the government, Parliament and institutions like the police have to discharge their role, society at large also needed to change its mindset. The people must become proactive to control crime against women. Schools, universities and families are the best places where people can prove that they are proactive to prevent such crimes. Sonia appreciated the decision taken by the university to name a ground after the late cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. Gandhi said she was delighted to be at the university as she does not often get a chance to be amongst students. |

Safdarjung docs go on mass leave
New Delhi, May 14 The second round of agitation comes five days after the Union Health Ministry promised the Resident Doctors Association (RDA) that its grievances would be addressed by today. RDA spokesperson Dr Sameer Prabhakar said they were forced to launch the indefinite protest as the administration did not take any action on their demands. “There is no forward movement. No action has been taken to meet our demands. We are launching our non-cooperation movement. None of the resident doctors will attend OPD, Emergency and ICU. Only senior doctors will be there,” he claimed. However, Medical Superintendent Dr B D Athani rejected the allegations. “The protest is despite the fact that the administration had agreed to most of their demands.
