Eunuch Rajni's entry upsets Cong, BJP
Dehradun, April 10 Rajni Rawat, who fought the last Mayoral election held in 2008 as an independent, had stood second cornering 44,000 city votes. She was defeated by BJP candidate Vinod Chamoli while Congress candidate Surat Singh Negi was third. However, this time Rajni Rawat has got the ticket of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) which has worried the Congress and the BJP. Although, the parties have yet to decide about their mayoral candidates, the entry of Rajni Rawat has upset their poll
calculations. Rajni Rawat had fought the last elections without any party support and it was believed that as a BSP candidate, she could do even better. Congress poll managers are worried since the Scheduled Castes and backward vote bank of the party living in the slum areas of the city could sway towards the BSP. Already the BSP has its pockets of influence among these communities. Similarly, the BJP, which also claims to get a sizeable votes of the Scheduled Caste, the Scheduled Tribe and backward communities, will be at a loss. Leaders of both BJP and Congress maintain that in case of a close fight, Rajni Rawat will be the most crucial factor in the coming civic elections in the state. Her entry has also affected equations in some wards of the Municipal Corporation as her candidature has also boosted the morale of the BSP candidates fighting the wards. Rajni Rawat, after her entry into political arena in 2008, also decided to fight the 2009 Lok Sabha elections from Tehri Garhwal but was persuaded by Vijay Bahuguna, the then Congress candidate to quit in his favour. Now, she also has grudge as she claimed that she had quit on the promise that she would be given a Congress ticket in the next Assembly elections by Vijay Bahuguna which was not fulfilled. She also fought the Assembly elections from the Raipur Assembly segment in the 2012 Assembly elections and polled only 3,000 votes. However, some political leaders of the Congress and the BJP brush aside her entry as a non-serious candidate and maintain that the main fight will be between the Congress and the BJP. But, like in the previous Mayoral elections, when she got a massive support of the voters, this time also she could emerge as a
game changer. |
