Team of saints returns from power project visit
Won't allow shifting of Dhari Devi temple for Srinagar dam
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, April 7
A delegation led by Swami Gyan Swaroop Sanadji (Prof G D Aggarwal), renowned environment activist and ex-Professor of IIT Kanpur, completed its two-day journey to hydro-power projects underconstruction in the state.

Convener of the Ganga Ahwan organisation Hemant Dhyani, while addressing the media along with Aggarwal and other members in the city on the conclusion of the journey, said they would not let Dhari Devi temple shift from its original space to make way for the construction of Srinagar dam.

He said, “A five-member committee consisting of Prof GD Aggarwal, Shivananad Saraswati, Hemant Dhyani, Sushila Bhandari and Swami Avi Mukteshawarnandji of the Ganga Seva Abhiyan launched the yatra to ensure the continuity of water flow in the Ganga.”

He further added that there were several alternative methods to generate electricity but no alternative to the Ganga and the Himalaya. Prof Aggarwal said he was ready to hold arguments backed by strong scientific reasons with the opponents but the state government must first stop the construction at the Srinagar hydro-power project. He called upon people who were completely committed to the cause of the Ganga to come forward and fight against the construction of hydro-power projects.

Swami Ganganand, who came from Bihar, said, “According to the Hindu religion, the deity of temple could not be shifted. The electricity can be produced somewhere else without tempering with the religious and spiritual sentiments of the people.”

Activist Sushila Bhandari, who had been jailed for many weeks for fighting against the Vyong Phata project, said the local MLAs with the support of the police did not let them visit the dam sight closely. This showed they wanted to conceal the damage done to the Ganga and the environment.

She added, “The legacy of the Himalaya and the Ganga do not belong to only Uttarakhand but to the entire country. We cannot sacrifice these valuable assets in the name of generating electricity.”

Member of the Ganga Seva Abhiyan Athar Jamaal Laari from Varanasi said water got polluted in those areas where these hydro-power projects were created. “An attempt is being made to sell hills, water and jungle to make money. A delegation from Kashi, which sat on a hunger strike at Jantar Matar for the same causes, had also expressed their opposition to the Prime Minister over the construction of dams on the river”, he said. Despite that the process of dams was not coming to an end.

The members began their journey, Ganga Aviral Chintan Yatra, from Haridwar and covered areas like Tehri Koteshwar dam, the affected villages, Srinagar dam site, Dhari Devi temple and the Singoli Bhatwadi Phata Vyondg project in Rudraprayag while culminating it in Dehradun.

In the journey, activists and people of the Sant community joined them from Varanasi, Bihar, Chitrakoot, Bangalore, Delhi and other towns of UP.

Ruckus over remark against Shankaracharyas
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, April 7
Members of the saint community and their supporters, who had congregated against the shifting of Dhari Devi Temple and construction at the Srinagar dam in order to allegedly save the Ganga, today entangled with each other over a petty issue.

A slight remark by Swami Ganganand of Bihar against Shankaracharyas and other eminent saints for not showing any concern for the Ganga campaign provoked supporters of Swaroopannad Saraswati from Varanasi. They raised slogans against the campaigners and announced to abandon the movement. Each group then demanded an apology from the other.

Swami Gangananad had said the Shankaracharyas and other saints showed great enthusiasm in taking dip in the Ganga during the Kumbh Mela but did not support its cause. He said they alone could not carry forward the struggle for long.

Gyan Swaroop Sanad, who kept quiet through the drama, seemed hurt. He said, “I embarked on the Ganga Avirlata Chitan Yatra to seek support from the people who were committed to the cause of the Ganga. However, I could not find one such person in a true sense. These people who are fighting here are concerned more about their sects than about the Ganga". He said he had no will to live anymore under such circumstances.

He also expressed his pain over the cold attitude of the people of the saint community sitting at exalted positions. “It seems it is only Matra Sadan that holds the responsibility to save the Ganga. No one else is bothered. The desertion of Shankaracharyas and other saints has left the campaign rudderless and weak,” he said.

The supporters of Swaroopannad Saraswati left the hall when convener of the Ganga Ahawan Hemant Dhyani sought an apology from them for intervening in the address of Swami Ganganand and distorting the facts. In his clarification, Ganganand said he did not point out to any name but talked in general about the saint community.

Dhyani said they faced many hurdles in their fight for the Ganga. Despite sharing the same cause for which this journey was taken up by every one ended at a souring note, he said.

It has been five months to the New Delhi gang rape, but cultural and social groups continue to awaken the consciousness of the people by staging plays and events against the dastardly act.
In the same chain, the Violence Against Women Network and a New Delhi-based social organisation yesterday organised a cultural evening comprising a play staged by the Sambhav Manch Parivar and the Mumbai-based Swaang cultural group.

Dialogue “Sabhaya samaj key log to murda hoteny hain” poignantly depicts the state of affairs prevailing in the society that refuses to react when a girl child is aborted or when women have to face humiliation while travelling in the buses.

“Through the play, we want to change the deep-rooted prejudice that the male-dominated society harbours against women,” said Abhishek Maindola, who also acted in the play.

Later, the stage was taken over by Swaang of Mumbai, led by the vivacious Swara Bhaskar, who sang the popular protest song ‘Maa Ni Meri Main Nahin Darna’ along with her co-artistes. This was followed by poetry recitation based on the writings of progressive poets like Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Paash and others.
