Fatehgarh Sahib, March 25 Dr Devinder Singh, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, said this model, prepared by the students, bagged the first prize in the state-level function “INNOTECH-2013” organised at Pushpa Gujral Science City, Kapurthala. He said Amritvir Singh, Gurshinder Singh and Rupinderjeet Kaur Bains innovated the Screw Technology lift technology under his supervision and this model bagged the first prize. Charges framed against wife, son of NRI Sabha chief
Chandigarh, March 25 Charges against the main accused, NRI sabha chief Amarjit Singh Virk, were framed in January this year in a case of sexual assault. The case was filed in the court in August 2012. A 32-year-old resident of Patiala had complaint that she was allegedly sexually abued by Virk and three others in Industrial Area, Phase VII, Mohali. The case dates back to July 13, 2011. The woman had alleged she met Virk at the PGIMER a few months before the incident. Virk had allegedly assured her that she would be sent to Canada. Later, he had called the victim to Chandigarh to return Rs 1.5 lakh, as he could not make arrangements to send her to Canada. The victim went to the Civil Hospital, Phase VI, Mohali, for medical help following the incident. Charges were framed against Virk's wife Surinder Kaur and son Gurjit Singh. Nigerian held guilty A local court today held a Nigerian, Alex Deox, guilty under the NDPS Act. The quantum of punishment will be pronounced on March 30. Alex was held in 2009 in Sector 23 with 5 kg heroin. |

Man found dead in Sector 21 park
Chandigarh, March 25 The DSP (East), Vijay Kumar, stated the deceased had been identified as Sukhwinder Singh, who had come to Sector 21 to meet his former wife, who stayed as a paying guest in the same sector. “Investigations have revealed that Sukhwinder Singh was a drug addict,” the DSP said. His former wife, after meeting him, left for some work and it was around afternoon when she tried to call him up. When the call was not answered, she decided to go back to the park. On reaching the park, she found Sukhwinder's body and informed the police. The DSP said the reason behind the death would only be established after the autopsy. Sukhwinder had got married in 2004 and in 2012 they got a divorce. “Sukhwinder had been staying in the city from last few weeks. He worked as a security guard with a Mohali-based agency,” the police said. |

Man held on charge of eve-teasing
Chandigarh, March 25 A woman, in her compliant to the police, has alleged that Jasbir Singh, alias Kila, a resident of Kajheri village, Chandigarh, and Bhag Singh, alias Bagga, teased her on Sunday. Jasbir has been arrested and an inquiry initiated. In another incident, a girl of Sector 38 has alleged that a person has been harassing her by sending SMSes on her mobile phone from different phone numbers. A case has been registered at the Sector 39 police station. |

Thieves decamp with cash, gold bangles
Mohali, March 25 In her complaint, Kulwant Kaur Bhatia alleged that she was away to judge a youth festival when the thieves struck at her house in Phase 10. They entered the house after breaking locks and took away cash and jewellery. The police has registered a case under Sections 454 and 380 of the IPC at the Phase 11 Police Station in this connection. |
Man killed in accident
Mohali, March 25 The deceased was identified as Baljinder Singh, a resident of Phase I. He was on his way home. The incident occurred on the Mohali-Chandigarh road. It was learnt that the tractor-trailer was on the wrong side. Baljinder was admitted to a hospital, where his condition deteriorated. He succumbed to his injuries today. The driver of the tractor-trailer fled the spot. The body was handed over to the family after an autopsy. A case has been registered in this connection. |

Youth found hanging from tree
Panchkula, March 25 The police is yet to identify the youth. The body was spotted by some women who had gone to collect firewood. Police post in charge Paramjit Singh reached the spot. He said it seemed that the body was three-day-old. "We are scanning the missing reports. The body has been kept in the mortuary of the General Hospital, Sector 6, Panchkula. In a similar incident, the skeleton of a 24-year-old woman was found on the Panchkula-Morni road. The deceased was identified as Anju, a resident of Karnal. Investigations revealed that the woman was murdered by her brother and uncles as she was in a relationship. Man acquitted
Mohali: The court today acquitted a man of rape charges. Varinder Pal Singh aka Tinku, a resident of Amritsar, was accused of raping his uncle's domestic help at Naya Gaon. There was not even a single witness in the case. A FIR was lodged at the Naya Gaon police station on October 16, 2012. The victim had complained that the accused had raped her after giving her sedatives. She had turned hostile later on. |

Chandigarh, March 25 The 23-year-old middle order batsman, with a successful last year under his belt, is looking forward to perform well in the upcoming season of the tournament. "The tournament is around the corner and I am eager to do well, this year. The team has lot of expectations from the youngsters and hopefully I will come up to those expectations", said Mann. When asked about his priority on getting a chance to be a part of the playing squad, the player added, "In the last edition, I had given a decent performance. And being a regular member of this team,hopefully, I will get better chances this year. In the presence of senior Australian players and a new coach, the team is looking a balanced side. The final decision is on the team management and I am ready to play my role". In the last edition, he hogged the limelight, after pulling off a thrilling last-ball victory against the Deccan Chargers. In his five matches, he scored a total of 86-runs with a strike of 165.38. In his debut for the Punjab team, he scored 236 runs in his first five matches including one century and one half-century. "To me, the team's performance comes prior to the individual's performance. It is an honour to play under the players like Adam Gilchrist, David Hussey and many others said Mann". On his junior batch mates' entry to the squad, he added, "It's good to see some well-known faces in the squad. Cash prizes: 30 players fail to submit forms on time
Chandigarh, March 25 "About 30 players failed to submit their forms on time. The proposal to award them with the cash award was passed by the executive committee. The file is now with the VC Office, for final approval and the procedure will take time. It's only after getting the said amount, can the department further distribute it to the players", said a source. On the other hand a player said, "After reaching here, I got to know about the non-approval of forms. Since the exams were approaching, I failed to submit the form on time. Now, I have to wait for another week, to get the awarded amount". Coaches, managers receive their dues
It is for the first time that the Directorate of Sports, Panjab University has taken an initiative to appreciate the efforts made by various coaches and managers, by awarding them with cash prizes. Over 30 officials, who successfully brought laurels in the All-India Inter-University tournaments, were awarded with cash prizes. Dr Gurcharan Singh Gill, Assistant Professor of Physical Education at SGGS College, Sector 26, was declared as the most successful official of the year. He was awarded with a prize of Rs 35, 000, for providing his services to the teams including yachting (men), baseball (men) softball (Men), yachting (women) and baseball (women). Under his supervision, all the aforesaid teams won first three positions in the All-India inter-University meets. "I am happy that the department has appreciated our efforts. This will certainly boost the supporting staff as well", said Dr Gill. |
Rommy steers academy into final
Panchkula, March 25 In the first semifinal, played today, the winning side defeated the team of ICL, Panchkula, by 36 runs. While batting first, the winning side posted a total of 142 runs after loosing 9 wickets in 20 overs. For them, batsman Rommy made a brilliant half-century off 47. He was well supported by Amit Unayal, who made 19 off 20. For the bowling side, Ankit Rawat and Rockey Ratta, claimed two-wickets each. In reply, the ICL team was bundled out for mere 106 runs in 17.3 overs. In the second semi-final, the Victorious club defeated Maa Aashriwad by 60 runs.
