Mock drill to test quake readiness
Chandigarh, February 12
NDRF personnel check the equipment to be used in the mega mock drill at the police training grounds in Sector 17, Chandigarh, on Tuesday. Putting to test the tricity’s preparedness for handling a disaster, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) will conduct a mock drill at 15 different locations each in Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali on Wednesday.

Hospitals lack common helpline

The absence of a common helpline connecting a person with all the three government hospitals, in case of a disaster, exposes the ill-preparedness of the city hospitals to deal with a disaster.

Formation of new panel opposed

Panjab University's recent decision to constitute a Monitoring Committee for Dr HSJ Institute of Dental Sciences and Hospital has led to resentment among the teachers of the institute. The teachers and members of Senate are also upset with the Vice-Chancellor's decision of constituting a committee and nominating the members, without even discussing the need for doing so.

No third party in feedback, says PU faculty
Chandigarh, February 12
The teachers' fraternity has given clear signs of rejecting any third party teacher feedback system and expressed that it should remain only between teachers and students. Panjab University Teachers Association (PUTA), over its discussion on the feedback system recently cleared by the Senate stated, they would revert any such exercise which would used as a tool to victimise the teachers. Dinesh Kumar, a Senate member and Assistant Professor at Law department stated, he was in favour of teacher feedback; provided it did not become fatal tool at the hands of the students.

Parked cars damaged in Sec 42
Chandigarh, February 12
Damaged cars parked in Sector 42, Chandigarh, on Tuesday. Residents of Sector 42 woke up to find their swanky cars parked outside their residence dented and damaged in the wee hours today. Miscreants in an Alto car who were being chased by the police banged their car into as many as three cars parked outside houses. The police has booked a youth, Nikhil Mahajan, a resident of Sector 23 D, in a case of rash and negligent driving under Section 279, 337 and 427 of the IPC.

Police investigations into the theft of valuables worth lakhs from Hotel Park Plaza in Sector 17 yesterday has raised serious concerns about the security arrangements at the five star hotel and has put the hotel management under the scanner.

UT Estate Office issues notices

Changing the course of its action against the illegal partitions done by the allottee of day market sites in Sectors 23, 26 and 43, the UT Estate Office is now issuing notices under Sections 10 and 14 of the Estate Rules 2007.

CRPF raises new battalion at Pinjore

Seven defaulters challaned
Chandigarh, February 12
A special sanitation drive during night hours was conducted in Sector 22 from 7 pm to 11 pm on February 11. During the drive, seven challans were issued to the defaulters for throwing garbage at unauthorised places under the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (Sanitation and Public Health) Byelaws, 1999.

In the Doon MLA Ram Kumar Chaudhary case, the police today filed its reply after consulting the Ambala Tehsildar regarding the general power of attorney case and the Tehsildar said the husband and wife should come to his office in person.

Arrangements on for a mega mock drill at Government College, Phase VI, Mohali, on Tuesday. To conduct a mega mock drill in the city tomorrow, manpower and machinery of various departments of the Municipal Corporation, be it the road wing, public health department or the fire department, are being used by the UT Administration and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

Fire breaks out in showroom

The quick reaction team for mock drill was taken by surprise today when a fire broke out in a showroom at Sector 11 this morning. Officials of the fire department thought that it was a mock drill and reached there with four fire tenders.

20 fire tenders pressed into service
Mohali: About 1,500 government officials and volunteers, 30 ambulances, 20 fire tenders, 15 JCB machines, six recovery vans and other equipment related to the rescue operation will be pressed into service for the mega mock drill to be conducted at 15 sites in the town.

As the government today ordered a probe by the CBI into allegations of corruption in the deal for 12 VVIP helicopters for the IAF, a Chandigarh-based firm has come under scanner for its role in the acquisition process.

High drama at PGI
Chandigarh, February 12
High drama was witnessed at the PGIMER on Tuesday when the minor girl, who delivered a baby boy last week, was being discharged from the hospital. While Childline officials, the acting guardians of the girl as well as the child, had made it clear that Mother Teressa Home, Sector 23, would look after the girl and the child, the PGI doctors called the police at the gynae ward for taking the girl away.

PGI scam: Bail granted to all accused

A local court has granted bail to 15 accused in the PGI entrance test scam that rocked the premier medical institute last year. The court granted bail to all the accused, including kingpin Gurivi Reddy and Dr Gangadhar Reddy in the case.

Inebriated man tries to outrage modesty of woman at Mansa Devi Complex
Panchkula, February 12
Rajesh, whose hand was crushed in a machine at Mansa Devi temple. High drama was witnessed at Mansa Devi Complex in Sector 5 when a drunk man tried to sexually assault a woman after entering her house this evening. He even thrashed her husband. On hearing the cries of the woman, neighbours rushed to the place and thrashed the miscreant, who later tore the uniform of one of the policemen.

Panchkula: The right hand of a youth was crushed in a machine at Mansa Devi temple. The victim, Rajesh, was rushed to the General Hospital, Sector 6, Panchkula, where doctors referred him to the PGI, Chandigarh.

The DAV College, Sector 10, organised its Annual Athletics meet, at college grounds, here. The Principal, Dr BC Josan, announced a total cash prize of 10 lakh for the outstanding sports person. During the meet, Ashish Lohan and Raveena Thakur were adjudged the best athletes in the men and women category respectively.

Sarvitakari school rout YPS in cricket
Chandigarh, February 12
In the ongoing First Mohali Cricket Cup, the Sarvitakari Cricket Academy, defeated YPS Cricket Academy. While batting first, the Sarvitakari team posted 203 runs on the board, before getting all-out in 40 overs. A half-century by Rahul and 32 runs by Kohinoor Sidhu, made the big difference to the total.
