PGI scam: Bail granted to all accused

Panchkula, February 12
A local court has granted bail to 15 accused in the PGI entrance test scam that rocked the premier medical institute last year. The court granted bail to all the accused, including kingpin Gurivi Reddy and Dr Gangadhar Reddy in the case.

The CBI is yet to file a chargesheet in the case. The 15 were arrested for a well-planned conspiracy to leak the question paper of the entrance test of the institute using hi-tech devices. — TNS

Pet shop owner held for selling rare species of tortoise

Acting on a tip-off by the local unit of People for Animal (PFA), the police arrested Baljinder Singh, owner of a pet shop in Zirakpur, for allegedly selling rare species of tortoise, at Sukhana Lake, here today.

The accused was charged under the Wildlife Protection Act to indulge in a deal of selling rare species of tortoises worth Rs 85 lakh. A team headed by local PFA activist Chetan Sharma along with police personnel, posing as decoy customers finalised a deal of 15 tortoises in Rs 20 lakh.

The incident occurred around 7.30pm, when the accused in his white car (CH03-C-7141), in order to take the token money of Rs 2 lakh, reached Sukhana Lake, with three-tortoises kept inside a black bag. “Our head, Maneka Gandhi, informed us about the smuggler.

The accused was called to Sukhana Lake to pay token money of Rs two lakh in cash against three-tortoise. He was caught red handed while showing the tortoises. The trap 
was laid with the help of the local police”, said Chetan Sharma.

Inebriated man tries to outrage modesty of woman at Mansa Devi Complex

High drama was witnessed at Mansa Devi Complex in Sector 5 when a drunk man tried to sexually assault a woman after entering her house this evening. He even thrashed her husband. On hearing the cries of the woman, neighbours rushed to the place and thrashed the miscreant, who later tore the uniform of one of the policemen.

"We were sleeping when the man entered our house. He beat up my husband and tried to outrage my modesty. When I resisted, he slapped me," said Pushpa.

One of the residents said the man abused him and tried to escape.

"The accused is stated to be mentally unfit. He apologised to the woman," said Dinesh Chauhan, station house officer of the Mansa Devi Complex police station.

Youth's hand crushed

Panchkula: The right hand of a youth was crushed in a machine at Mansa Devi temple. The victim, Rajesh, was rushed to the General Hospital, Sector 6, Panchkula, where doctors referred him to the PGI, Chandigarh.

The hospital staff did not provide a stretcher to the victim.

"My hand was crushed while working on the dough mixing machine," said Rajesh.

Sarvitakari school rout YPS in cricket

In the ongoing First Mohali Cricket Cup, the Sarvitakari Cricket Academy, defeated YPS Cricket Academy. While batting first, the Sarvitakari team posted 203 runs on the board, before getting all-out in 40 overs. A half-century by Rahul and 32 runs by Kohinoor Sidhu, made the big difference to the total.

For the bowling side, Aman grabbed 4 for 40, while Davinder claimed 2 for 36. In reply, the YPS were bundled out for 128 runs and only Aman with his 37 off 65 played a respectable knock for his team. Bowler, Kohinoor Sidhu claimed 4 for 15, while Gagan claimed 1 for 10. — TNS

Vivek school enter semis of cricket tournament

The Vivek High Asian Cricket Academy, defeated St Stephens School, Sector 45, by 25 runs to enter the semifinals of the ongoing 2nd Sardar Bhagwant Singh Memorial Cricket tournament, being held at Vivek High School, Sector 38, here.

The wining side posted 172 runs in their allotted slot of 25 overs, after they elected to bat first. For them, Shivam Bhambri with 52 runs and Karan with 37 runs, made healthy contributions towards the total. Meanwhile, Anant and Anhad Sachdeva scored unbeaten knocks of 33 and 37 runs respectively. For the bowling side, Himanshu claimed 3 for 38 while Akash Rana took 2 for 28.

In reply, the St Stephens' side could manage to score only 147 runs in their alloted overs. Saksham Katoch with 61 runs and Rahees Singh(35-runs) were the only contributors for the team. For the bowling side, Ransher Randhawa and Karan grabbed three-wickets apiece whereas, Angad Khera took 2 for 23.
