Junk food out, protein diet in for Amarnath yatris
Jammu, February 11 Choudhary said high-protein food like cereals, pulses, potato, saag, nutrela (soya chunks), basin curry, roti, tandoori roti, bread, rusks, tea, coffee, fruit juice, vegetable soup, kheer, dry fruit etc which provide stamina and keep the body light, have been included in the menu to be served to the yatris. Governor NN Vohra who is also Chairman of the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board, has asked the CEO, SASB to ensure effective implementation of the advice of the expert committee and revise the terms and conditions of the langar permissions to bind the langar organisers to serve food to the yatris strictly in accordance with the new healthy food menu. He said the Special High Powered Committee constituted by the Supreme Court had earlier observed that a large number of food items included in the menu of the Langar Organisations were not suitable for pilgrims who were required to trek in the high-altitude areas. The panel also recommended that an expert committee should prepare a suitable menu to be adhered to by the langar organisations. The menu has been formulated by the committee comprising Navin K Choudhary, CEO, Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board, Col Rajul Gupta (High Altitude Medicine Specialist) from the Union Health Ministry, Dr Jahangir Bakshi and Dr Sham Gopal from the J&K State Health Department at its meeting on January 7, 2013 in Jammu. in

Permit setting up of 172 LPG agencies by February 20, dealers told
Jammu, February 11 Officials said the issue to grant permission to new dealers has been pending over past two years as the oil companies have been delaying the process, despite repeated directions issued to them as well as requests by the state government. Since the Centre put a cap on the number of subsidised cylinders, it has become tough for people to get refills for which they have to wait for more than two weeks. “As many as 172 new dealerships are to be set up. Out of these 55 would be issued under regular dealership and 117 under the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen LPG Vitral Scheme (RGGLV), targeting the rural areas,” an official said. Under the RGGLV scheme all blocks of the state would have LPG dealerships. “Establishment of new dealerships at the block level would help provide cooking fuel to consumers in the rural areas at their doorstep, besides curbing black marketing,” Minister for CAPD, Choudhary Muhammad Ramzan, said. Ramzan said the companies have also been directed to complete the scrutiny of old connections under the Know Your Consumers (KYC) scheme. So far 15.70 lakh connections have been regularised under the KYCs in the state but still 41,000 connections are still under the scrutiny process. Sources said the small number of gas dealers has created monopoly in the market. “Every dealer has huge area under it thus the profit margin is also very high. They are also responsible not to allow new dealers to come into the picture. Dealers have developed a vested interest in not allowing any increase in the number of further dealers.” Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, Bharat Petroleum Limited, and Indian Oil Corporation distribute LPG refills in the state. As per norms followed in the country, there should have been 1,700 distributors to cater to the requirements of 10 lakh LPG consumers here. According to sources, “Oil companies are hand in glove with the gas dealers and are deliberately scuttling plans to increase the dealerships/number of dealers to provide benefits to the existing dealers.” |

BJP protests shifting of ration depots
Jammu, February 11 Led by BJP Jammu-Poonch Parliamentary constituency incharge Yudhvir Sethi and BJP Mahila Morcha state president Priya Sethi, party activists, along with residents drawn from various parts of old city raised slogans against the CAPD department and demanded immediate re-shifting of ration depots to their original places. They alleged that the department had shifted the ration depots from Purani Mandi, Jullakha Mohalla and Link Road to Peer Mitha, Pakki Dhakki and Pacca Danga. Terming the decision of the department as “totally unilateral without the consent of people”, Yudhvir Sethi said it was causing “great inconvenience” to thousands of consumers who had to go to other places from their own localities to get ration items. “The shifting of old ration depots are also putting financial burden on the people as they have to pay the carriage charges to labourers,” he said. He declared the party stands with affected families and opposes the decision “tooth and nail” till shifted depots were not brought back to their original places. Priya Sethi said the decision to shift ration depots to other places cannot be justified by any means. “It is indeed unfortunate that the government departments take such decisions or frame such policies which invite public resentment and anger. The recent decision of shifting ration depots is one of such cases,” she alleged. She said the reason put forth by CAPD that “complaints against ration depot holders” had forced for such shifting holds no justification. “The department can proceed against erring depot holders; why are helpless consumers punished for no fault of theirs?” she questioned. The protesters warned they would intensify their agitation if the government didn’t relocate the ration depots from their original places. |
