Stone wash Inspired by monolithic architecture, Delhi-based Designer Abhi Singh has used free-flowing fabric to wonderful effect
As a theme, monolithic architecture sounds so complex, so intelligent. Refer to Wikipedia and it bounces back with results of architecture that promises a lot of movement on the vertical surface of a structure. Abhi Singh liked the concept, decided to replicate the same for his spring summer collection at the Wills India Fashion Week for 2013. Fabric became the obvious substitute of concrete as well as stones and that is where the simpler part of the adaptation ended. "Afterwards it was like climbing a steep hill. To depict movement on the base was the actual challenge," says the fashion designer from Delhi. After a few brain-storming sessions with his assistant, he decided to experiment with free flowing yarn. Tied and dyed yarn threads woven together intricately on the fabric gave shape to the final product, which surprised him as well. The treatment was novel, something they hadn't ever seen anybody in the industry do before. As expected, the collection sold out entirely at the fashion week and the same concept is keeping him busy even now. The orders are still coming from his international clients, who gave thumbs-up to his depiction of monolithic architecture. At the same time, the response from his Indian clients, as expected, was lukewarm because experimentation with structure here is often referred to as quirky or eccentric. "I don't feel the need to challenge what my Indian clients think. I instead make a separate collection for them; something that suits their sensibilities," says the designer, who was in Chandigarh recently to showcase his ethnic collection at the KJH Punjab Fashion Week.
The creations he presented here boasted of traditional Indian work like zardosi, mukaish, dabka and tilla. "Fashion followers still swear by ethnic when it comes to Indian designer-wear. You don't offer them their staple designs and you lose out on business." An NIFT graduate, while Abhi sticks to the popular works, he dabbles with cuts and silhouettes. "That is where I get a free hand. Make the hemline asymmetric, add ruffles, attach puffed sleeves…people are fine with draping but work has to be what they have always preferred." He doesn't blame simplistic approach of people, but advocates the strength and popularity of traditional Indian works. "If a bride-to-be demands a phulkari in her collection, it's not because she is regressive but for the fact that phulkari is beautiful; looks rich and royal. You can't use any modern work as a proxy to it." The ethnic collection he brought here were in bright colours, what people of Punjab like. Abhi's next collection will be an extension of what he presented at the last outing at WIFW. The only difference being the material used for the yarn. If for summer he used silk and viscos, for winter wool and tweed will serve the purpose. The colours will also be changed accordingly. The obvious shift will be made towards darker shades. Surprisingly, this time, he is feeling jittery as against how he felt with his first outing with the same theme when — "I was super excited". Now he is nervous, "The expectations are very high now. Fashion critics want me to raise the bar. Bring up a 'different' collection and they won't accept anything that's usual." Probably that is what keeps the young experimental designers like him, Aneeth Arora, Rahul Mishra and the brigade on their toes all the time! ashima@tribunemail.com |

Where change is constant…
Artist Madan Lal’s Urban Mythology depicts myths in a new light and how
successfully these have seeped into our system
‘Open up to a new world everyday'. This could classify as one inspirational quote to lift up your mood. At the hindsight it is a fact, a truth to be more affirmative. Time brings about a gamut of changes not only in us but also everything around us, whether it is as basic as our living style, buildings, mode of interaction to something like myths. The compilation of ideas that we named as myths are in for a change now. In fact, Chandigarh-based artist Madan Lal feels they have already changed. His latest work put at Art Folio under the title Urban Mythology highlights this change, and how it has successfully seeped into our system. Bright colours, extensive use of geometric shapes and of elements, Madan Lal’s Urban Mythology rubs the urban affect on us. Hanging at the very beginning of the entrance of Art Folio, his work Frame Of Life takes transports and leaves you in a society that has adopted myths according to personal needs, whims and fancies. Madan steps in to explain his work. After all, it is a reflection of his thought process and personality. “We change according to time, and so has our society, which is the urban society. It is in this urban society that we have created myths for ourselves and we like to stick to them," he says taking us closer to his painting, which has a lot of geometric patterns and various elements picked up from the social milieu. Locks, fish jar, exhaust fan, buildings, keys, guitar, telephone, dish antenna, flowers…everything has a role to play in this urban set up. All his works on display have this as the underlying though. “These geometric forms take us towards silence. What do you see in a building, after sometime, it stands as a symbol of silence and this is what I have tried to depict," adds Madan who has an interesting question and answer in his next painting. Have you see the God of Love with a bow and arrow aiming at the hearts. “Today…," he pauses for a while looks at his work…today, all we have to offer in terms of love are question marks, commas." In one of his painting, Madan shows how the only thing that comes out from a man’s navel (figuratively) is the burden of the social set up--installment pressure, aspirations we are burdened under these new myths. From The Urban Mythology to his work that he has named Naad. This is something totally different as he has tried in black and white. “The two works depict the division of life in five parts or five signs," Madan shares. His works will be put at Jahangir Art Gallery from January 23-29. (On till January 12) jasmine@tribunemail.com |

What’s in a name?
Very much in love, Kishwer Merchant and Suyash Kumar have gone down the numerology road and changed the spelling of their names. Now Suyash Kumar is Suyyash Rai while Kishwer Merchant is Kishwer S Merchantt. They are not only using this spelling for everyday use, but also making changes in the official documents. On the court!
Poor Daya Ben and Jethalal; they had never, even in their dreams, thought of going to a court, that too over the issue of Jetha’s another wife. For the first time in the history of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, there is a court scene. All the evidence is against Jetha and the court gives him exactly seven days to prove his innocence. So what will happen that will make Gulabo go back to her home? “Normally, all our tracks get over in 7 to 8 episodes. This is the first time that the same track has been going on since one month and will continue for another 12 days. It is very difficult task for a daily comedy to extend one track for so long but viewers have liked it a lot. They sympathises with Daya and Jetha and are waiting to see how these two will pack-off Gulabo the imposter,” says Asit Modi. Adds Disha Wakani aka Daya, “I have been getting advice from viewers as to how I should handle this girl. Everybody wants her to go back. It feels so great when your character becomes larger-than-life.” And the icing on the cake is the fact that Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah has opened to the TRP ratings of 4 plus, taking it amongst the top five shows across channels. Way to go for this perfect daily comic drama!
Suhasi is a busy-bee
Suhasi Dhami is back with a bang with not one but two shows - Housewife Hai … Sab Jaanti Hai on Zee TV and celebrity couple dance reality show Nach Baliye 5 on Star Plus. She talks about being extremely busy and managing two shows.
Work time
My day starts in the morning at eight and ends at around two the next morning, but I manage to cope up. I thank my respective production houses for being so kind to me. I was waiting for this day to arrive. Balancing shows
The year 2013 has brought in a lot of happiness in my life. It’s fun and challenging to balance between both the shows. This industry has given me a lot. I took up Housewife because I loved the concept. Although it is a saas-bahu show, it has a different concept with a comic
tadka. About Nach Baliye
I took up Nach Baliye because I love dancing. For
Jaisheel, it is not that easy and sometimes he goes off-beat also. He can perform Salsa. Surprise element
Star Plus’ Diya Aur Baati Hum will bring in more drama with a new character. Actor Surendra Pal, last seen in Mahadev, will enter as a Swami. He will be initially seem like a positive character, but later he will cheat people.
Time for action
In this week on Star Plus’ Veera, villagers are suspicious about a new person who is looking for Ratan and Sampooran's haveli. Ratan gets infuriated at seeing the new guy at her haveli. She asks him to leave even though he claims to be Sampooran's friend. Kartar happens to meet Jaiveer at a dhaba and gets some information on Sampooran from him. Kidnapping drama
This week on Star Plus’ Ek Hazaaron Main Meri Behna Hai, Daboo is kidnapped as there is misunderstanding because a goon thinks he tried eloping with his sister Sweety. The Chaudharis are tensed as they hear that Daboo was beaten up for eloping with some girl. Sweety has some agenda and she wants to use Daboo to her advantage. Twists & turns
Kapil Nirmal, who became famous post his role in Raja Ki Ayegi Baraat and later in Colors’ Na Aana Iss Des Laado, has signed up for a significant role in Yash Patnaik’s Veera. He will be introduced as Sampooran’s (Sudhanshu Pandey) friend. His entry will bring many twists to the show. |

The right choice Dr Vikas Sharma Washing and taking care of hair in the winter season is one of the trickiest and at the same time most important act. If you're overwhelmed at the bevy of hair shampoos and conditioners in the market today, you're not alone. There are thousands of products that claim to cleanse the oily, moist and dirty scalp thoroughly without stripping or drying out delicate hair shafts. So how do you know which chemical laden scalp wash is right for your hair? There are a few simple guidelines in determining a good shampoo for your delicate hair. Here's what you should use and avoid to achieve great lengths for beautiful hair:
Getting to the root of chemical hair damage
Many people tend to subject their hair to harsh shampoos followed by heated styling devices that, in turn, can damage the hair. Over time, lustrous hair can look
lacklustre, become brittle and require a complete hair care overhaul to improve hair health and appearance. When hair is damaged, the protective lipid layer of fat on the outside of the cuticle-responsible for making the hair shiny-is removed. Chemical damage is one of the most common culprits of hair damage, as processed hair loses its natural moisturizers. The result is dried-out, frizzy hair that does not hold its style and accounts for the hair's dull appearance.
Most of the people are either too afraid of chemical damage due to shampoos as they tend to wash them immediately after applying or on the other extreme they keep the shampoo in the hair for very long period of time thinking that it will yield better cleaning of scalp hair. But the fact is that the ideal contact time of shampoo to hair should be around five minutes, neither less nor more. This allows appropriate time for cleaning of dirt in the hair without causing a chemical damage. (Dr Sharma is a Chandigarh-based dermatologist &
dermato-laser surgeon)

Bulbous blooms Satish Narula The bulbous plants give one of the most beautiful flowers. The climate in Tricity is such that it allows growing of various kinds of bulbs here. It has been observed that even those belonging to high altitudes give bloom here when the climate is conducive. Being hardy, they grow easily. At times the city gardeners bring grown-up plants from high altitudes and get blooms in the plains of this region. Such blooms are seen in flower shows too. The bulbs are one of the best options for those gardeners who are fed-up with routing winter annuals. These are not much demanding too. The soil for general growing of bulbs should be sandy loam or loamy sand in texture which is the kind of soil in this region. It should be moderately fertile with good water holding capacity. The bulbs respond well in soils with ph between 7 and 8 which is prevalent in this area. While growing bulbs in pots, the best mixture comprises of two parts sand, two parts leaf mould, two parts well-rotten farmyard manure, one part soil and half part charcoal. The gardeners plant various kind of bulbs in the garden. After these have given flowers, some gardeners do not know about what to do with the bulbs. In case of hardy bulbs like Amaryllis, truberose, canna, zephyranthes lily one could leave these bulbs in soil for two to three years for multiplication before these are extracted for replanting. These are hardy type bulbs. In case of the tender type bulbs like gladiolus, narcissus, freesia, dahlia, these should be extracted every year and stored at cool place after treating them with a fungicide. One could use bavistin, dissolved at two gram to a liter of water. The bulbs could be dipped in such a solution for about an hour and dried in shade for storage. It prevents the appearance of fungal diseases that get aggravated during storage and failure of bulbs to start in the next season. Those who had planted bulbs like gladiolus, dahlia, lilies etc should note that since these are borne on long stalk, they need support. In case no support is given the heavy bloom stalk may break with wind. The blooms should be supported with a strong support like bamboo stick or saria by tying and pulling the stalk on the side opposite to the bending of stalk. Providing support to such plants is more necessary when these are grown in pots as they become more unstable and prone to breaking. Fact file Due to intense breeding, it has now been possible to grow the dwarf varieties of even cineraria and dahlia as edge plants. They hardly grow in height to four to six inches or so. The gardeners are thus advised to keep abreast with the latest introductions and introduce these in their garden to have an edge over their neighbours. Such introductions also find favour with the judges who come calling for judgment of a garden in flower shows. (Narula is a senior PAU horticulturist) |

In black & white Manpriya Singh
Before she begins on the joys and sorrows of a pet, there's a warning note for all the existing and the aspiring masters. "If you are ready to give time and love to the pet, only then you should have one. Moreover, it should be a family decision. I've literally mothered them," shares Nivedita Sharma, businesswoman, of her two pets Romeo and Frappe. "Romeo is a six-year-old, black Cocker Spaniel, while Frappe is a five-year-old white Lhasa Apso. And they are complete opposites not just in colour but also behaviour." There's a third one too. "That's a big Rottweiler and he stays only at the farmhouse and guards it." She adds, "In fact, at the farm we also have buffaloes. The family is not just dog lover but animal lover." Love me, love my dog
Coming back to the "black and white" duo, she shares, "Frappe is a bundle of energy, he is completely naughty, brattish and taught me how to be patient. They are moody but loyal towards their masters and ferocious to outsiders." If one is too much to handle, the other makes up for it and together they complement. She laughs, "Romeo is like a saint. He listens, follows instructions seriously and is very quiet. Cocker Spaniels are the best breed to keep especially if you have little children at home." Accordingly, the names had to reflect the characteristic traits. While one was love at first sight, the other was quite a refreshing change. "Romeo was gifted by my husband to may daughter and we fell in love with him immediately. So he had to be called Romeo." She adds, "While Frappe is such a bundle of energy, he was so hyper and a refreshing change, hence the name." Yours faithfully
"Firstly, it's such a pleasure to see them running about the house. They bring an infinite positive energy with them." Then follows the unconditional love and loyalty. "They don't judge you, there's no negotiation in the relationship and no list of demands." She is not finished yet. "I feel sorry for the pets whose masters go to work and leave them alone all day. I'd say, just as you plan a baby, you should plan a pet. Because a pet is quite a responsibility." And she winds up with yet another warning note. manpriya@tribunemail.com

Waiting for a better tomorrow… Divya Dutta I am in a state of shock. What times are we living in? Is this what a democracy is? Anyone gets up, makes a statement and moves on and is let off without any action taken as the law will take its own course. And the course will last at least a few years! By then you will be tired and exhausted and will give up. Or, there will be loopholes to let you off somehow! Yeh India hai! Yahan kuch bhi ho sakta hai. After a few protests, furor and debates on TV, kya result nikla? Nothing! What can a common man do to show his protest beyond a point? I saw a man on a hunger strike for justice for Jyoti Singh Pandey. No one knows about it because it is not politicised! Here in India, everything is about the ruling and the opposition party. Why are issues not bigger than parties and politics? Why do the core issues get lost in party debates? I am in a state of shock at Asaram’s statement. As Arnab in his show said, Bapu is a mark of respect. So, I won’t call him bapu either! A man with 5 crore followers says the girl who was raped should have begged the rapists saying they are like her brothers and she would have been saved! What kind of thinking is that? You wouldn’t even want to counter it! And he disappears and gets his spokesperson to come on TV and make a statement. It was a shock to hear her. She said ‘being a woman if I was in her place I would not have boarded the bus and would have recited mantras'. I am curious to put her in the same situation and find out if mantra uccharan would save her. The fact is, bus or taxi or rickshaw, a girl should be safe in her surroundings. It’s disappointing, disgusting and hopeless. After ages, people stood together for a cause and it’s now being diluted by politics and by dirty mindsets. What kind of democracy is this? I wonder if it is for the people, of the people, by the people… Where would the common man vent out his angst? I wait for a day of results, of action, the day when the family of Jyoti Singh Pandey, the brave girl whose beautiful life was cut short, to get justice. I wait to see the day when rapes are not committed, the day when people help each other without the fear of being harassed later. I wait to see when the criminals fear the law. I wait to see the Owaisis and Asarams and Dubes are not let off with these statements and those accused are given what they rightfully deserve-- capital punishment. I wish it was a Hindi film with a happy ending where the bad were put to rest and it actually was the victory of the common man over the powerful! I wait. It’s endless, but I still hope… (Dutta is a Bollywood actor) |

The outer apparel can be resourced and bought by many an 'attention' seeking youngster but what actually brings the person to be a fore runner in being 'a la mode' is the way the incumbent carries it. In short, the correct attitude says it all and that's what our trendsetter Akshay Bajaj is in sync with. Akshay is doing his MBA in international business. Your sense of style? For me the combo of wearing smart clothes and more so carrying them off, well attuned to one's persona spells style. It should also appeal to others. What have you bought recently which you treasure the most? My watch from Tommy Hilfiger. Brand crazy or street pick-up? Mostly prefer brands but sometimes like to experiment with street clothes too! It’s fun to mix and match. Who is your style Icon? My namesake—Akshay Kumar! Who do you think is the worst dressed celebrity? Govinda. Which look would your prefer - sporty, chic or glamorous?
