Nine arrested for siphoning off wheat

The Vigilance Bureau (VB) of the Punjab Police today arrested nine persons, including two inspectors of a food grain procurement agency and seven depot holders, on the charges of siphoning off wheat meant for above poverty lines (APL) families of the district. An inspector of the Punjab food civil supply, however, is still absconding. Acting on a complaint, the VB had raided a godown of the PUNSUP in Dasuya in the first week of December and sealed 600 sacks of wheat, which were siphoned off by employees of the agency (the PUNSUP) in connivance with officials of the Food and Civil Supplies Department and the depot holders.

Parshotam Lal, a mechanic of Ram Garhia Mohalla, Hariana, succumbed to his injuries on way to the PGI Chandigarh on Saturday night. Parshotam was seriously wounded when Taranjit Singh of Bhullana along with his 20 other accomplices allegedly attacked the former with swords at his residence at about 10 pm. Police sources said Taranjit along with others came to the residence of Parshotam Lal and attacked him.

Nine arrested for siphoning off wheat

Hoshiarpur, January 6
The Vigilance Bureau (VB) of the Punjab Police today arrested nine persons, including two inspectors of a food grain procurement agency and seven depot holders, on the charges of siphoning off wheat meant for above poverty lines (APL) families of the district. An inspector of the Punjab food civil supply, however, is still absconding.

Acting on a complaint, the VB had raided a godown of the PUNSUP in Dasuya in the first week of December and sealed 600 sacks of wheat, which were siphoned off by employees of the agency (the PUNSUP) in connivance with officials of the Food and Civil Supplies Department and the depot holders.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Satpal Singh said "During raids, the officials and the depot holders were found guilty following which a report was submitted to the chief of the department."

After getting a go ahead from the top, the VB sleuths of arrested PUNSUP inspectors Harbansh Lal and Sohan Singh posted at Mahilpur and Dasuya, respectively. Their third aide, Manjit Singh, who is an inspector with the Food and Civil Supplies Department, is still at large, the DSP added.

The VB has also arrested depot holders- Ranjit Singh of Kaire, Didar Singh of Sood, Nishan Singh of Bhushan, Mohinder Pal of Alampur, Harminder Singh of Dasuya and Amardip Singh of Gorsian.

The DSP claimed to have received a complaint that wheat allocated under the Centre’s APL scheme to be distributed through the public distribution system was not reaching the beneficiaries. Taking a note of this, the VB had initiated a probe and sealed 600 sacks of wheat from godowns in Mahilpur and Dasuya.

The VB has also found serious irregularities in stock registers and a technical team of the department had seized the record.

Satpal Singh said a case had been registered against the accused under Section 420 (fraud), 409 (criminal breach of trust by public servant) and 120-B of the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act in this regard.

Man dies after being brutally attacked

Parshotam Lal, a mechanic of Ram Garhia Mohalla, Hariana, succumbed to his injuries on way to the PGI Chandigarh on Saturday night.

Parshotam was seriously wounded when Taranjit Singh of Bhullana along with his 20 other accomplices allegedly attacked the former with swords at his residence at about 10 pm. Police sources said Taranjit along with others came to the residence of Parshotam Lal and attacked him.

Parshotam sustained grievous injuries and was taken to the civil dispensary, Hariana, from where he was referred to the Civil Hospital, Hoshiarpur, and thereafter to the PGI, Chandigarh. Six days ago, there occurred a quarrel between Parshotam Lal and the accused on some issue.

The Hariana police has booked the accused under Sections 302, 452, 427, 148 and 149 of the IPC. — OC
