Chargesheet in Shruti abduction case filed
Tribune News Service

Faridkot, December 26
The Faridkot police today filed a chargesheet in the Shruti abduction and rape case against all the 20 accused, who are at present lodged in the Central Jail, Faridkot.

The 15-year-old girl was first abducted on June 25. A case was registered against Nishan Singh, Navjot Kaur, Dimpi Samra and Bikram Singh. Two days ago, the police had filed the chargesheet against four accused in this case.

The girl was again abducted on September 24 and in this case, the police arrested 20 persons.

Keeping in view the public outrage over incidents of crime against women these days, the Faridkot police hastened to file the chargesheet with the duty magistrate as there is winter break in the courts.

Some of the accused in the case have been in jail for around 80 days. A delay of 10 days in filing the chargesheet could have made those accused entitled to get bail under Section 167 (2) of CrPC, said GS Toor, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Faridkot. The police would ensure that there was no delay at the level of prosecution in the speedy trial of this case, said the SSP.

The police today produced a list of 80 witnesses before the court to prove charges against the accused.

Earlier, the police teams had raided various hideouts in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, UP, Delhi and Goa to nab the accused. As per an estimate, the police investigation in this case has so far cost the state government about Rs 50 lakh.

The police has also procured various fake documents on the basis of which Nishan Singh got a passport and a driving licence. The police has also got the DNA testing of Nishan Singh done from PGI, Chandigarh, to prove him guilty of rape charges.

Leopard kills blue bull, scared farmers suspend farming
Our Correspondent

Abohar, December 26
The leopard that had devoured two dogs and attacked three villagers chasing him yesterday has now killed a blue bull in the jungle surrounding Gumjal, the last village of the Abohar sub-division, located close to the inter-state border.

Scared farmers in Gumjal and neighbouring villages have suspended farming activities and resolved to keep the children and women restricted to their houses.

Divisional Wildlife Officer Dr M Sudhagar along with the Divisional Forest Officer Dr Sanjeev Tiwari, Superintendent of Police Varinder Singh Brar and Abohar DSP Raj Kumar Jalhotra are camping in the village to supervise the operation launched to catch the leopard.

A team of the wildlife department from the neighbouring Sriganganagar has also arrived to coordinate in the operation. Experts have installed a huge iron box inside the jungle. Sharpshooter Ram Dev arrived from Chandigarh to hit the leopard with bullets full of sedatives. However, there was no sign of the animal till the time of filing the news.

The three persons who were shifted to the district hospital in Sriganganagar after they were attacked by the leopard are responding well to the treatment, doctors said.

Notably, a search for two missing dogs had resulted in the recovery of their skeletons and the footprints indicated that they had been killed by a leopard. Hundreds of people wielding lathis had launched a drive to locate the animal that suddenly emerged from shrubs and attacked three of them before escaping. The open wildlife sanctuary, graded as the largest in Asia, is spread over Gumjal and the neighbouring areas of Sriganganagar.

Park cleaned as tribute to martyr on his birth anniversary
Our Correspondent

Abohar, December 26
While most urban institutions prefer to organise National Service Scheme (NSS) camps during the summer and winter vacations in the villages, the NSS unit at the Government Senior Secondary School in Dangarkhera village has organised its camp in Abohar.

Some of the students led by the NSS in-charge Bhupinder Singh Mann and Resham Singh said they had learnt of the pitiable condition of the park developed as a memorial to Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, the iron man who was the first Home Minister of independent India. They were equally interested in showing reverence for the martyrs who had sacrificed their lives during the struggle for independence and the Indo-Pak wars.

The students visited Patel Park that had recently been cleared of sewage that had accumulated there due to intensive blockage for the last four years but tonnes of garbage still awaited removal. They were joined by the local police that was on patrolling duty but were moved by the spirit with which the students were working. The students then moved through the main roads of the sub-divisional town. On the way, they dusted and washed the memorials of the great martyrs and social reformers.

Finally, the volunteers assembled at Shaheed Udham Singh Park that had been spoiled by the waste dumped there by the owners of eateries and liquor vends.

Braving the dense fog and chill, the students dusted the park, washed a statue of the martyr and garlanded it to mark his birth anniversary. They took a pledge to abstain from consuming alcohol or tobacco products besides joining the campaign against drugs.

Second term has made SAD leaders arrogant: Ex-MP
Our Correspondent

Abohar, December 26
Former MP and chairman of the Punjab Congress SC/ST Cell Mohinder Singh Kalyan has said that people in Punjab have by and large lost faith in the law and order enforcing agencies.

The politicians of the ruling alliance who had been harassing members of the Dalit community and those belonging to the economically weaker sections of society in the past have gone a step further by targeting the men in khaki, he alleged.

Kalyan decried the recent incidents at Ludhiana and Chheharta that involved police officials and said the second term for the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) at the helm has made its leaders arrogant.

The former Member of Rajya Sabha said the Congress would enlighten the public as its legislators were not allowed to take up important matters on the floor of the House during the winter session.

No takers for Red Cross library in Muktsar
Archit Watts
Tribune News Service

Muktsar, December 26
The initiative taken by the district administration in opening the Red Cross Public Library in the city over two years ago-- in August 2010-- has so far failed to elicit a positive response from the residents here.

The library, situated in the heart of the city, near Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, has almost 2,500 books in Punjabi, Hindi and English. It subscribes to 10 magazines and 18 daily newspapers in various languages and has the seating capacity for 25 persons.

However, its wait for the readers is proving to be endless. The hall of the library is lying vacant and hence, books are locked up in almirahs.

A visit to the library revealed that except for the librarian, no other person was present and the chairs were lying vacant. As per the data provided by the staff of Red Cross Society, the library presently has just six life members, 70 annual and 135 monthly members. The figures further revealed that the number of members was dwindling.

Though the membership fee of the library has been kept low, inadequate publicity has been proving to be a major reason behind the poor response.

The monthly membership fee of the library is Rs 25. The annual fee is Rs 250 while the lifetime membership can be obtained by paying Rs 1,250.

The librarian admitted that more publicity was required as most of the people were not aware about the facility in the town.

She said the books lying in the library had been donated by the local residents and not a single book had been purchased by the Red Cross society from its funds.

"Even the bills of some magazines and newspapers are being paid by local social activists. Some people have also donated money to make the library more useful," added the librarian.

Hardev Kaur Gill, secretary, district Red Cross society, said, "There are two major reasons behind the poor response to the library. One is less publicity and the second is lack of interest in reading among the people here."

"Though we are trying our best by holding camps in educational institutes and appealing to the public to get the membership of the library, yet few people have shown a positive response," she added.

Gill, however, hoped that the membership would increase in the days ahead.
