Civic body cancels auction

The Ludhiana Municipal Corporation has got a jinxed start to its second round of auctions, aimed at generating income for the cash-strapped civic body. The second round of auctions was to start from the auction of a 5,917 sq yard commercial site on Hambran Road today.

Infighting in the Congress seems set to intensify in the coming days. Ten days after the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation got its leader of the opposition, senior deputy leader and deputy leader, the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president, Capt Amarinder Singh, has made three more nominations to the MC.

Two murder accused surrender
Ludhiana, December 21
Two main accused in the case pertaining to the murder of 24-year-old Amit Kumar, alias Ginda, who was killed at Dhakka Colony, Ambedkar Nagar, here on December 19, surrendered before the police today. Manjit Singh, alias Manni, and Ajay Kumar, alias Ajju, gave themselves up to the police.

39 LPG cylinders seized
Ludhiana, December 21
Acting tough against violation of norms for use and storage of LPG cylinders by hotels, restaurants and other commercial establishments, a team of officials from the District Food and Civil Supplies Department today conducted raids on two restaurants on Pakhowal Road and seized 39 commercial cylinders of different oil companies. The cylinders were stored in the open in violation of rules laid down in the Explosives Act as well as guidelines of oil companies.

Timely intervention by the Amargarh circle police prevented the situation from turning sour when an ASI allegedly manhandled a woman and a number of social organisations staged a dharna in front of the city police station in protest against his action.

Various organisations in the city have showed their solidarity with the victim of the Delhi gang rape. Students of Kundan Vidya Mandir today observed a silent march to protest against the gang rape of a young para-medical student. The students carried placards and raised slogans.

Delhi’s shame
Four brothers booked on charge of duping farmer
Jagraon, December 21
The police has booked four property dealers for allegedly duping a farmer of Bhundri village, near Sidhwan Bet, of Rs 20 lakh on the pretext of getting him purchased cheap agricultural land. All the accused have absconded and the police was conducting raids to arrest them. The accused, who have been identified as Ishwar Das, Ashok Kumar, alias Kala, Shinda and Vijay, are brothers. They run a private firm dealing in the business of sale and purchase of property.

No stopping thieves
Ludhiana, December 21
Putting a challenge to the police, for the third consecutive day, thieves were successful in their strikes. This time they decamped with lakhs of rupees from a retired Principal's house and an electronics goods shop by breaking the locks. The thefts have put a question mark over the night patrolling by the police in the city.

Bank loan defaulter held

The police has arrested a bank defaulter, Gurvinder Singh, against whom cases of fraud had been registered in different police stations here.

Thieves held; 11 bikes recovered
Ludhiana, December 21
The police has arrested members of a gang of thieves, who stole two-wheelers from illegal parking lots in the city.

Woman takes acid, hospitalised
Ludhiana, December 21
Jasbir Kaur (40) of Guru Arjun Dev Nagar here was today admitted at the Civil Hospital after she consumed acid. She is stated to be stable. According to Jagjit Singh, Jasbir Kaur’s son, his maternal uncle (Jasbir’s brother) died a few months ago and his mother was unable to reconcile to the loss. — TNS
