Youth dies in road mishap

Dera Bassi, December 21
A youth was killed when an unidentified vehicle hit him on the Ambala-Chandigarh road near Jyoti Hotel. The deceased was identified as Keshav, a resident of Bhagwasi village.

The body of the victim was handed over to the relatives after conducting a postmortem. — OC

Students launch signature campaign

In a bid to get justice for the Delhi gang rape victim, staff and students of Sri Sukhmani International School, Dera Bassi, organised a signature campaign.

Members of the Sukhmani group expressed their anger non-violently through placards and banners, which bore the messages - “Wake up India”, “Are we safe?”, “Hang Them! Demands India”.

Prof Avtar Singh, chairman of the Sukhmani group, and director Kanwaljeet Kaur expressed concern over the security of women.

They said the criminals had shown extreme brutality, therefore, they should be punished.

The principal of the school, Ajay Nathwani, said this was not only a crime against women but also against society.

Man gets life imprisonment for killing wife

Mohali, December 21
A resident of Dera Bassi was today sentenced to life imprisonment by a court here for murdering his wife.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Rajinder Aggarwal, who pronounced the sentence, also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the accused, Rajinder Kumar.

Rajinder was held guilty of killing his wife, Sruti, on December 19 under Section 302 of the IPC.

Sruti, a resident of Saha village, near Ambala, was married to Rajinder about six years ago.

On October 17 last year, Sruti sustained burn injuries and was taken to the GMCH, Sector 32, Chandigarh, by her husband. She gave a statement the next day to a magistrate that her burns were due to an accident while cooking.

On October 19, Sruti’s parents came and questioned her regarding the statement given about the incident.

She told her parents that the statement was allegedly given under pressure. The woman’s father alleged that his daughter was harassed for dowry.

The second statement was then recorded by a magistrate on the plea of the parents on October 20 in which Sruti alleged that her husband used to quarrel with her and had also told her to get out of the house.

She alleged that her husband poured kerosene on her and set her on fire.

The woman died three days later on October 23.

PGI paper leak: Bail plea dismissed

Chandigarh, December 21
A local court today dismissed the bail plea of eight accused in the PGI paper leak scam.

The investigating agency had strongly opposed the bail plea on the ground that the investigations in the case were at an initial stage. Last month, the CBI had arrested 16 accused in the PGI paper leak case. — TNS

Nine arrested with stolen items worth Rs 12 lakh

Mohali, December 21
The CIA staff of the Mohali police has arrested nine members of a gang of burglars. The police also recovered stolen items worth Rs 12 lakh from them.
SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said here today that the arrested accused were identified as Ajay, Ram Chander, Ajay Kumar and Raju, all four residents of Amb Sahib Colony here, Sanju, a resident of Una (HP), Mochi Ram of Mundi Kharar, Rajesh, a resident of Mohali village, Parmesar, a resident of Kambali, and Ramesh Bahadur, a resident of Hallo Majra.

The SSP said the police first arrested six persons against whom a case under Sections 399 and 402 of the IPC was registered at the Kharar Sadar police station. The police recovered weapons, swords and iron rods from their possession, apart from two motorcycles. Three persons were later arrested on the basis of questioning.

Bhullar said the members of the gang used to break into hardware stores, godowns and locked houses. A number of cases had been registered against them at various police stations earlier.

They had twice struck at a hardware and paint godown in the Phase VII Industrial Area and decamped with goods worth Rs 5.86 lakh. These items were later sold to a scrap dealer. They had also targeted a house in Sector 69 and took away household items.

The property recovered from the gang members included one Maruti, a home theatre, 17 chargers, nine mobile phones, three cameras, one handycam, a laptop and an inverter.

5-year-old run over by train

In a tragic incident, a five-year-old boy was run over by a train while crossing a track near the Faidabad village barrier here this evening.
 

The victim, Shiva, was a resident of Faidabad village itself and his parents, who are labourers, were working nearby. — TNS

The men’s team of Chandigarh Table Tennis Club lifted the Gurmit Singh Grewal Memorial Trophy after pipping Audit Club 3-0 on the final day of 25th Chandigarh State Table Tennis Championship at Sector 23 here today.

Meanwhile, Manav Mangal Coaching Centre won the women’s team event after beating Chandigarh Table Tennis Club 3-2.

Men’s team final: Rachit Chopra beat Munish Bhardwaj 8-11, 11-6, 11-13, 11-8, 11-7; Dev Saini beat Vikas 10-12, 11-7, 11-9, 11-7; and Mayank Kapoor beat Prasoon 11-7, 14-12, 11-8, 11-9

Chandigarh, December 21
The boys’ team of Sri Aurobindo Club beat the host, Sri Aurobindo School, Sector 27, 2-1 (3-1, 2-4, 5-3) to win the Chandigarh Senior State Dodgeball Championship here today.

In the girls’ category, GMHS, Sector 26, beat GMS, Kishangarh, 2-0 (5-4, 3-2) to lift the trophy. The event was organised to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekanand. — TNS
