Unlike the authorities in Chandigarh and Mohali, the Panchkula MC and HUDA have failed to get the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court implemented with encroachments outside the houses of bureaucrats still intact even after bringing the same to their notice.

The last General House meeting of the outgoing Mayor Raj Bala Malik ended on a controversial note amid furore as the SAD-BJP councillors accused her of hurriedly invoking the National Anthem to put the stamp of approval on the agenda discussed on the floor of the House without taking them into confidence.

PGI doc gets the boot over sexual harassment

For the first time in the history of the PGIMER, a doctor was expelled on Monday after being found guilty of sexual harassment. The internal inquiry which completed last week found Dr Parveen Bansal, assistant professor, department of biochemistry, PGIMER, guilty of sexually harassing a junior lab technician of the same department.

Cancer Awareness Campaign
806 cases detected in Mohali so far
Mohali, December 17
As many as 806 cancer cases have been detected so far in Mohali district by teams of the Health Department during the cancer awareness campaign launched on December 1. The ongoing campaign, which started from Balmiki Colony in Phase VI here, has also revealed 1,282 cases of suspected cancer.

Good Samaritans: Indian doctors perform 780 polio surgeries in Nigeria

A team of Indian doctors returned home yesterday after successfully conducting over 780 polio corrective surgeries in Nigeria. Addressing the media here today, Past President of Rotary International, Rtn Rajendra K Saboo, who conceived this project.

No winter break for postgraduate students, staff, courtesy PU exams

The staff and students of postgraduate courses in the colleges affiliated to Panjab University will miss their winter break this year courtesy the semester examination date sheet prepared by the university. While the university has announced the winter break from December 23 to January 8, the postgraduate exams in colleges will be finishing on January 8, keeping the students as well as teachers busy.

Three booked for assaulting farmer
Fatehgarh Sahib, December 17
The local police booked three persons for physically assaulting a farmer at Wazidpur village near Bassi Pathana late last night. The victim, Harpeet Singh, alias Happy, has been admitted to a hospital and his condition is stated to be critical.

Dera Bassi, December 17
The body of a Dera Bassi resident, Joginder Singh Bhatia, was donated to the PGI, Chandigarh, after his death for the purpose of medical research. As per information, 80-year-old Bhatia, who was a retired teacher and remained unmarried throughout his life, died on Friday.

Recovery officer gets two-year jail
Chandigarh, December 17
The special CBI court today sentenced the recovery officer of the Debt Recovery Tribunal, SS Kalra, to a two-year rigorous imprisonment in a bribe case. Kalra was arrested in 2010 for accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a Panchkula resident for issuing a sale certificate for a property on April 28, 2010.

Woman sarpanch arrested for illegal sand mining
Mohali, December 17
The local police has arrested a woman sarpanch of Raipur village for illegal sand mining from ‘shamlaat’ (common) land of her village here. Her accomplice, Jagdeep Singh, a local contractor, is still at large. The sarpanch, Kulwant Kaur, has been arrested on the complaint of Kulvir Singh, who is also a member of the village panchayat.

ATM fraud: Man loses Rs 20,000
Chandigarh, December 17
A resident of Sector 45, Chandigarh, lost Rs 20,000 as fraudsters withdrew the amount from his account using an ATM card. Altaf Ali reported to the police that the amount was withdrawn from his account with the Bank of Bikaner, Mohali branch, on October 13. He received an SMS that Rs 20,000 had been withdrawn from his account from a SBI ATM in Sector 47.

Havildar, home guard dismissed for corruption
Mohali, December 17
The Mohali SSP today dismissed a police havildar and a Punjab home guards jawan on the charges of corruption and dereliction of duty. SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said a case was registered against havildar Raghvir Singh, who was on the PCR duty, and home guard jawan Surinder Kumar under Section 384 of the IPC and Section 7.13(1) (d), Prevention of Corruption Act. The two were also arrested.

Youth found murdered
Panchkula, December 17
A 21-year-old youth was found murdered at Sunderpur village, Barwala, this morning. The police said the youth's identity could not be ascertained as his body was partially burnt. It seemed that the youth was beaten to death, the police added. Sluggers were found from the crime scene.

Panchkula, December 17
Thieves struck at a house in Sector 7 and decamped with cash and jewellery worth lakhs. Owner of the house, BK Sharma, former PGI director, was away to Delhi. Despite the fact that the footage was captured in the CCTV cameras, the police has failed to nab the accused. He said on return, he found the locks broken.

Kidnap bid foiled
Chandigarh, December 17
A 23-year-old call centre employee had a harrowing time last night when two occupants of a Verna car tried to kidnap her as she was returning home. The girl, who is a resident of Zirakpur, reported to the police that youths in a car misbehaved and teased her and as she resisted they tried to kidnap on the road separating Sectors 44 and 45.

'Kidnapped' girls traced to Mumbai
Panchkula, December 17
Two 15-year-old girls, one from Panchkula and the other from Delhi, who very reportedly kidnapped, have been traced to Mumbai. One of the girls is a student of Class X at Bhavan Vidyalya, Sector 15, Panchkula, and a resident of Sector 12, Panchkula. She went missing on Friday.

Ludhiana-based Pranab Gill, the youngest autocross and rally driver in North India, eyes big in motorsports in the country. The 22-year-old dirt driver displayed his skills during the recently held Autocross and Motocross-cum-Off Road Challenge-2012 in Mohali.
