Chaura Bazar traders question notices
Ludhiana, December 17
Shopkeepers of Chaura Bazar, the commercial hub of the city, have questioned the notices issued to them for removal of encroachments in front of their shops. They have asserted that the extension of 2.5 ft in front of each shop was, in fact, a bona fide allotment made by the MC way back in 1972 against a licence fee.

2 drug peddlers get 10-yr jail
Ludhiana, December 17
Two drug peddlers, Pardeep Singh (28) and Rupinderjit Singh (30), of Lapran village, Ludhiana, have been convicted of possessing 204 kg of poppy husk. They have been asked to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 10 years each.

21-yr-old woman commits suicide
Ludhiana, December 17
A 21-year-old woman committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her house in Salem Tabri here last night. The deceased has been identified as Poonam. She had got married last year, but the marriage did not work and she got divorce last week.

City police acts tough, tightens noose around eve-teasers

In the wake of an ASI’s murder in Amritsar, who was shot dead for trying to save his daughter from being harassed by eve-teasers, the city police today conducted a challan drive against “road Romeos” outside a girls' college.

Rath Yatra leaves trail of garbage
Ludhiana, December 17
Litter strewn around a tent following the Jagannath rath yatra in Ludhiana on Monday. Heaps of garbage greeted city residents a day after the Jagannath rath yatra was taken out with religious fervour on Sunday. For commuters visiting the Sarabha Nagar area and taking the Ferozepur and Rani Jhansi roads, it was an unpleasant experience.

Roads leading to kabaddi stadia in bad shape

As the state government is celebrating the triumph in the world kabbadi championship, the residents wished that potholed roads, leading to different kabaddi venues should also be repaired soon.

PAU employees' protest enters 26th day 
Ludhiana, December 17
The protest of the PAU employees over the non-payment of 70 per cent arrears according revised pay scale continues. The dharna, which entered its 26th day, was organised by the PAU Employees' Union in front of the Thapar Hall. A large number of employees participated in the protest. 

392 students get degrees at Punjab Agricultural University convocation

Jeweller alleges robbery, refuses to file complaint
Ludhiana, December 17
High- drama took place at the Cemetery Road in Civil Lines area today after a jeweller claimed that armed assailant robbed him and fled with a bag containing Rs 3 lakh.

Placement drive held
Over 3,000 students from various colleges of Ludhiana participated on the first day of a placement drive at the Gulzar Group of Institutes in Khanna. The job festival will continue till December 22. Renowned companies of the corporate world such as CEAT, American Express, Wipro, Genpact, L&T Finance, Maruti Suzuki and TVS are recruitmenting in the festival.

5 suspected cases of dengue
As many as five suspected cases of dengue were reported from the different hospitals in the city on Monday. The affected people belong to Ferozpur, Sangrur, Hoshiarpur and Jammu and Kashmir.

Two youths arrested with heroin
Jagraon, December 17
The Jagraon police has arrested two youths and seized 20 gm heroin from their possession. The accused have been identified as Harpreet Singh Chandla, a resident of Shastri Nagar, and Manoj Singla, a resident of Sant Nagar. The police has registered a case against the accused under the NDPS Act.

Man dies in mishap
Ludhiana, December 17
A 22- year-old man died of asphyxia after a mound of sand fell on him during an excavation at a factory unit at Jugiana here today. The victim has been identified as Parvinder Giri, a migrant labourer.

 


 

Venue of School games unkempt before mega event

Players, who have come to participate in the National School Games, rest in a room at Government Model School, Cemetry Road, Ludhiana on Monday. Students who will participate in the 58th National School Games which begin tomorrow at the Guru Nanak Stadium have expressed apprehensions that broken glass of tube lights, pins and nails which are scattered on the ground could cause them injuries.

Visiting teams unhappy over arrangements
Ludhiana, December 17

Over 2,300 athletes, who are part of 28 teams from different states, have come to the city in the wake of the 58th National School Games starting tomorrow. The week-long event, comprising kick Boxing, kabaddi, circle-style kabaddi, hockey and handball, will be held at Government Model School, PAU.

World Kabaddi Cup over, administration begins reconstruction of boundary wall
