COA to be blamed, says UT Sports Department
Chandigarh, December 17 A private firm under the patronage of the Chandigarh Olympic Association (COA) had organised the Mini Olympic Games 2012 in October this year. The Sports Department had provided a total of 12 sports venues on concession to the private firm for the four-day event. The organiser submitted a total of Rs 31,000 instead of the commercial usage charges of over Rs 1,30,000. Joint Director, UT Sports Department, JDS Sidhu said: “The COA, which enjoys all our facilities, in their venue-booking letter, failed to mention that it had no role to play in organising the tourney. We received the request on their official letterhead, following which they were given the special
rates; therefore, it is a mistake of the behalf of the association.” When asked about the Department’s verification process, he added, “After receiving the request on an official letterhead, there was no need of inquiring into the matter. We just followed the rules.” The tourney was conducted from October 9 to 12, and on the last day of the competition it was reported in the
same columns about this special ‘help’ given to the Schoolzworld.com,
the private firm. On October 10, the matter of high-entry fee from the players was also highlighted. The organisers booked the venues for four days, from October 9 to 12 while the Hockey Stadium-42 was booked for only a day (October 8). |
