Joint Protest against state govt amid tight
vigil
Bathinda, December 16 The entire police force of the district, including SHOs of various police stations, was on its toes following massive protests by these unions, which decided to take out a protest march in the city despite opposition by the police. Members of these unions united after they had held separate protests in the city over the past many days. The members said instead of fighting their individual battles, they had decided to unite and raise their voice against the Punjab Government. They said since all the unions were protesting against the state government, they decided to come on a single platform and raise voice against the wrong policies of the government, which has led to unrest among various sections of society. Addressing the gathering, various speakers said they would not rest till all their pending demands were not met by the state government. Heavy police force equipped with sophisticated weapons, tear gas shells and other machinery of the police department, was pressed into service in view of the joint protest. The dharna continued for more than three hours and the police too was determined against allowing protesters to take out a protest march in the city and disturb peace. Members of the Unemployed Linesmen Union said they would now target the political conferences to be held at Fatehgarh Sahib on the occasion of Jor Mela. Apart from taking part in the massive dharna, the unemployed linesmen assembled at the Nehru Park along with their families to chalk out a strategy for their next agitation. The Jor Mela is held every year at Fatehgarh Sahib to commemorate the martyrdom of younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh guru. Different political parties hold conferences on the occasion. The Unemployed Linesmen Union has decided to agitate against the government at the SAD-BJP conference. Around 200 linesmen and their family members, including spouses, kids and parents, gathered at the Nehru Park. As many as 1000 linesmen, who have been appointed, also expressed solidarity with the protesting linesmen. State general secretary of the union Jagtar Singh Mahinangal said the union members were scheduled to meet Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal on December 12. The union has been demanding appointment of 4,000 linesmen in the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL). The members of the union had asked the PSPCL to amend the Special Leave Petition (SLP) that it has filed in the Supreme Court to obtain a stay on the recruitment of linesmen, imposed by the High Court, vacated. "The state government had promised us of moving an application for early hearing of the cases being pursued in the High Court and the Supreme Court. Despite the assurance, nothing has been done so far. We wanted to take up the issue during a meeting with the Deputy Chief Minister on December 12, but it did not happen," he said. Earlier, the unemployed linesmen held a dharna at the rally of the state irrigation minister Janmeja Singh Sekhon in Maur Mandi in November. They were arrested for staging the protest. |
Problem of staff shortage delays probe in criminal cases
Bathinda, December 16 A section of police officers, SHOs and others while talking to TNS regretted that the frequent visits of VIPs, including Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal, MP Harsimrat Badal and various other leaders, and holding of various events like Virasat Mela and Kabaddi Cup that see members of Badal clan of senior leaders of the ruling alliance as chief guests, have virtually left the police only to perform VIP duties. A senior police officer said all the important police stations of the district were left on the mercy of Munshis during a mega medical camp organised in Mansa recently. The officer regretted that a Munshi was not at all capable of handling complaints, investigations and even to counsel two parties fighting over an issue at police stations. The officer said the matter had already been discussed at length with SSP Ravcharan Singh Brar and he was soon going to take up the matter with the DGP. An SHO deployed at one of the police stations in Bathinda district, while pleading anonymity, said the SHOs were forced to do extra work and even if a minor error creeps in, the erring SHO was either suspended or transferred out. "One policeman cannot handle more than one enquiry at a time. But the investigation officers are forced to do more than two or three investigations simultaneously," said an official deployed at the Civil Lines police station. The police station has registered the maximum number of cases as compared to the other police stations in the district. The police officials at the Kotwali police station, which also has got a huge number of cases registered, expressed similar views. "There is no dearth of complaints at the Kotwali and the Civil Lines police stations. Most of the cases registered at these police stations were related to theft, robbery, minor skirmishes and clashes," they said. Bathinda SSP Ravcharan Singh Brar said "We are managing quite well with whatever resources and basic facilities that we have been provided with by the government. We always try our best to satisfy all the complainants and have recently cracked even blind cases." He pointed out that a separate investigation cell was in the pipeline and modalities in this regard were being finalised and the same would soon be introduced in police stations. Brar added that many police stations registered more than 400 FIRs in a year and the cops were learning the technique of multitasking to crack more than one case at one point of time. "Staff crunch gives an opportunity to the cops to show their calibre by doing more than one job at a time," he said. Fact file

Stoppage of Jammu-Tawi sought at goniana
Bathinda, December 16 President of the foundation, Dr MM Garg said cancer patients often visited Bikaner to undergo treatment. Halting the train at Goniana railway station would help in minimising the sufferings of the patients and their relatives by giving them direct connectivity. They added that thousands of pilgrims from the area also visit Vaishno Devi every year. Besides this, there are a number of pilgrims visiting the Dera Beas as well as Brahm Kumaris at Mount Abu in Rajasthan. Goniana Mandi also has the prominent Gurudwara Tikana Bhai Jagta Ji Sahib and thousands of people from India and abroad come to the gurudwara. Direct connectivity would be helpful for the followers of all these sects, the foundation argued. It also stated that the military personnel posted in Rajasthan, particularly in areas like Bikaner, Suratgarh and Jodhpur, will also be benefited as it will be easier for them to board the train from Goniana Mandi. Garg said the stoppage will also be helpful to many traders of Goniana Mandi who are engaged in cloth business and visit Ahmedabad and Surat for work. Earlier too, area residents had pleaded with the Northern Railway authorities for halting the Jammu-Tawi Express in Goniana Mandi. The general manager of Northern Railways has been repeatedly sent representations and correspondences from various quarters demanding that the train be halted in the area. The Bathinda unit heads of Brahma Kumaris, Tikana Bhai Jagtaji Sewa Panthi and residents of Goniana Mandi have already sent written representations to the Railway Minister. Garg said Goniana railway station is situated on the Ferozepur-Bathinda main railway line and Punjab Mail has been stopping at the station for many years now. “Goniana Mandi is a sub-tehsil of the town and having a halt of Jammu-Tawi Ahmedabad Express would mean giving an impetus to the development in our area,” said Garg. How will it help?
