Carjacking near city mall
Bathinda, December 9
The place where the incident took place is a stone's throw away from the residences of senior police officials. The incident took place in broad daylight at around 3.30 pm. The black SUV was driven by its owner, 27-year-old Harpreet, a resident of 100-feet road near Ghorewala Chowk. Narrating the incident, Harpreet, a wholesale dealer in kerosene, said he got his car washed at an agency near his house and had come to Big Cinemas, not far away from the official residence of the IG (Intelligence) Jatinder Jain, to enquire about the movie timings. "I did not put my car in the parking as I was had to spend just a few minutes to enquire about the movies. I hardly made a call and came back," Harpreet said. The car owner said he noticed two youths watching him when he was leaving the cinema while talking over his cell phone. He, however, ignored the youths and sat in his car. "As soon as I opened the car door, a youth entered and sat from the other side. He interacted with me as if he knew me," Harpreet said. He added that the second youth stood opened the driver's door and pointed the pistol at his stomach. "I put aside the pistol and tried to start the car but the youth sitting beside me took out another pistol and pointed it at my forehead. He ordered me to get out. I was stunned and alighted when he threatened to kill me," the car owner said. The youths started the vehicle and fled. He said that another SUV, a Toyota Innova, which was coming from the other side, signalled the youths in the Ford Endeavor using headlights and the Innova trailed behind the Endeavor. The boys fled towards the road on which the official residence of Inspector General of Police Nirmal Singh Dhillon is located. Harpreet tried to run behind them and took out his mobile phone to call up the cops and dialled the PCR number 100 but nobody responded at the police control room. Harpreet then hitched a lift and went straight to the Civil Lines police station. He also called a friend and the owner of the car washing station near his house. They failed to get the attention of the cops at the police station who asked them to first bring the documents of the looted vehicle to lodge an FIR after which an inquiry would be initiated. "We wasted almost 30 to 40 minutes, which were too precious to locate the car. We realised the seriousness of the police when DSP City-1 Gurmeet Kingra called at my cell phone," Harpreet said. The DSP asked me to reach the place of the incident where he had arrived. Other police officials, including ASP Patil Ketan Baliram and SP (H) Gurmeet Singh also joined him later. Harpreet said the police talked about engaging a sketch maker and on the request of his friends and family members, asked the workers of the Fun Cinemas to show the video clippings. In the evening, the police was busy downloading the CCTV footage from the camera installed at the parking lot as there was a possibility of catching a glimpse of the accused. Harpreet said the accused appeared to be from well-to-do families as they were wearing good clothes and were handsome to look at. Fun Cinema workers said the area becomes quiet during the evening and youngsters can be seen smoking and consuming drugs in and around Nehru Park. The vehicle lifters might have taken the advantage of the area being quiet on a Sunday evening as there is hardly any patrolling by the police in the area where the residences of senior civil and police functionaries are located. Fact file * A Ford Endeavor luxury car worth Rs 18 lakhs was looted at gunpoint by two youngsters from outside Big Cinemas at around 3.30 pm. The place where the incident took place is not far away from the official residence of IG (Intelligence) Jatinder Kumar Jain. * The car owner called at 100 but the police control room failed to respond and the owner hitched a lift and went to the Civil Lines police station where the cops failed to entertain his complaint. The policemen, instead, demanded the papers of the car. * The car owner said DSP City-1 Gurmeet Kingra called him to reach the site of the crime after 15 to 20 minutes. * Police was busy scanning the CCTV footage of the Big Cinemas and said the accused would be arrested once their face is found captured by the cameras. |

keeping dying art alive Gurdeep Singh Mann Tribune News Service
Bathinda, December 9
The design of the cannon, with its wheels, has earned appreciation from various quarters including Army officials and their family members who visit his shop to have a look at the cannon. Rampal said Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal also visited his shop and appreciated the cannon and other items made by him. He said three months back, he received a letter of appreciation and a request to shift his cannon to a New Delhi-based museum. Rampal said he had initially made four cannons. While three of these did not last for long, only one is left which has now become too hard to break. "I am happy to hand over the cannon to the museum so that more and more people can see an object, made by pottery, which is now a dying art," he said. Apart from the cannon which made Rampal richer by Rs 40,000 — purchased from him by an art lover— he is also famous for making earthen lamps in which oil does not spill despite putting the lamp upside down. "The outlet for the oil in the lamp is underneath and despite putting the lamp upside down, the oil does not come out from the outlet. The hole for the wick (batti) is at the top of the lamp and the lamp stays lit for more than six hours," Ram Pal said. He said a large number of these lamps were sold during Diwali and people appreciated his idea of making such lamps. His shop, located on Bibiwala road, is full of pots depicting flowers, birds, animals, statues of Hindu gods and various other material. Rampal has now started taking help from the internet to get new designs with the help of his teenager son. "My son has done a diploma and is studying further in earthenware to work on new designs and come up with more innovative ideas," Rampal said. The potter added that he remains much in demand at the summer camps organised by various schools in the city and in the cantonment area. The elderly potter regretted that mud and clay were becoming expensive day by day and were not readily available these days. "It is difficult to procure good quality clay which is brought from Lucknow or Vrindavan and costs Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000 per truck," he said. |
