Wait till it turns Green

Stung by criticism for installing plaques in the incomplete green belts, the Municipal Corporation cancelled the inauguration of the green belts at Sector 41 and 42, which were ‘recently’ on city Mayor Raj Bala Malik’s inaugural itinerary.

Streetlights on the road separating Sectors 27 and 28 have been non-functional for a long time. Chandigarh, December 15
The maintenance of streetlights in different sectors has not seen any improvement in the one-year tenure of city Mayor Raj Bala Malik. The streetlights in parts of the city are in a poor shape. A few months ago, the officials of the Municipal Corporation had made an announcement during a meeting of the MC House that they would make all the streetlights functional before Divali.

Thieves decamp with wine worth Rs 5 lakh

A theft was reported at a leading wine showroom, ‘World of Whisky’, in Sector 7 last night where thieves decamped with more than Rs 1.20 lakh and bottles of wine worth around Rs 5 lakh.

Jyoti's father fears for life
Panchkula, December 15
In the Jyoti murder case, the victim's father, Buti Ram, today filed a complaint with the Panchkula police, saying that he was threatened to be killed by a few persons at Tanda village, Nathupur near Hoshiarpur, if he won’t accept the money and sign an affidavit to close the case.

Annual festival
Students of Tender Hearts School, Sector 33, present an item during their annual function in Chandigarh on Saturday. Annual festival of Ankur School, Sector 14, concluded at the Law Auditorium in Panjab University on Saturday. The function began with Ganesh vandana which was presented by the students of class VIII. The KG students presented a beautiful quawali. Haryanvi dance and a musical play "Chidiya Ki Shaadi" were also presented by the children.

No clarity on general quota

Although thousands of admission forms were sold in the past week in the private schools of Chandigarh, yet there is no clarity on how many seats will be up for grab under the general quota out of the total number of seats.

Syndicate nod to exemption to regular teachers with two years of service from PhD entrance test
Chandigarh, December 15 The PU Syndicate has approved the recommendations of the standing committee that the regular university teachers and those belonging to affiliated colleges, with minimum two years of service, be exempted from PhD entrance test. It has approved to reserve one seat more than the prescribed eight seats for the teachers of affiliated colleges.

PGGCG to hold alumni meet today

Post Graduate Government College for Girls (PGGCG), Sector 11, is going to organise its third alumni meet on Sunday. To make it more interesting, the alumni association of the college has tracked down all the principals of the college since 1956.

Preneet Kaur expresses concern over law and order situation in state

Preneet Kaur hands over a cheque of Rs 25 lakh for construction of a bridge at Amlala village on Saturday.Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. She said the state government should consider the situation sincerely. She stated this on the sidelines of a function, which was organised at Amlala village to recommence the construction work of a bridge on the Ghaggar river.

Toxic fumes kill one
Dera Bassi, December 15
One person died and another was in a critical condition due to the toxic gas, emanating from a "angeethi" while they were sleeping. As per information, the youths had lighted the "angeethi" in the canteen of Mount Shivalik Breweries Limited Company last night.

4-year-old girl dies in road accident at Lalru
Dera Bassi, December 15
A four-year-old girl was killed in a road accident at Lalru Mandi last evening. The victim was identified as Ashi, a resident of Lalru. The accident took place when the minor girl had come along with her father in Lalru Mandi for shopping and suddenly a tractor hit her. The girl was rushed to the GMCH, Sector 32, Chandigarh, where she succumbed to injuries. The police had registered a case against tractor driver Brijesh Kumar Gupta, a resident of Lalru, under Sections 279 and 304A of the IPC. The body of the victim was handed over to the relatives after conducting autopsy. OC

Quick justice: Court acquits 3 in rape case
Chandigarh, December 15
A local court pronounced the order within 24 hours after the case was presented before it. The court of District and Sessions Judge SK Aggarwal acquitted all the three accused in an alleged rape case reported in August this year.

Man kills wife
Chandigarh, December 15
Pinki, a 19-year-old woman, was murdered by her husband, Vikram (23), at her maternal house in Mauli Jagran, Mani Majra, here today. In an attempt to make it look like a suicide, the accused put the body on a bed and locked the room from outside before escaping.

Two booked for fraud
Chandigarh, December 15 The Economic Offence Wing (EOW) of the UT police today arrested two persons who allegedly duped a man of Rs 4.5 crore on the pretext of purchasing a land in Dera Bassi.

3 held on theft charge
Zirakpur, December 15 
The Zirakpur police has arrested three thieves with the stolen motorcycles, gas cylinders and a mobile phone. The accused were identified as Ravinder Kumar, a resident of Chaudhry Colony, Zirakpur, Saurav, a resident of Green Enclave, Zirakpur, and Randeep Singh, a resident of Dashmesh Colony, Zirakpur. — OC

Autocross and Motocross Challenge
Biker Abhishek Mishra leads in qualifying round
Chandigarh, December 15
During the qualifying rounds of the Autocross and Motocross-cum-Off Road Challenge-2012 held today at YPS Grounds in Mohali, Bobby Bhogal of Delhi finished the 1.5-km dirt track marked by sharp twists and turns in 1.23 seconds. He was closely followed by Phil Mathaus and Sanjay Sikand, both from Delhi.
