Preneet Kaur expresses concern over law and order situation in state

Dera Bassi, December 15
Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. She said the state government should consider the situation sincerely. She stated this on the sidelines of a function, which was organised at Amlala village to recommence the construction work of a bridge on the Ghaggar river.

Preneet kaur said criminal elements had entered into the Youth Akali Dal and the SAD was encouraging them. "Officers are being beaten up by the SAD leaders and If a police officer could not save his daughter's honour then what would happen to the common man in Punjab. The Congress party will fight against the highhandedness of the Youth Akali Dal leaders," she added.

Meanwhile on the occasion, she handed over a cheque of Rs 25 lakh from the MP quota to the bridge construction committee . She assured that the Central Government was ready to provide more funds for development projects in Punjab. The construction work of the bridge was lying pending due to shortage of funds and ban on sand mining.

Toxic fumes kill one

Dera Bassi, December 15
One person died and another was in a critical condition due to the toxic gas, emanating from a "angeethi" while they were sleeping. As per information, the youths had lighted the "angeethi" in the canteen of Mount Shivalik Breweries Limited Company last night.

The deceased was identified as 30-year-old Rajesh kumar, a resident of Adarsh Nagar, Ambala city. Other person was identified as18-year-old Happy, a resident of Yanunanagar. Both were working as waiters in the canteen of the company. The police has registered a case under Section 174 of the IPC and the body was handed over to the relatives after conducting a post-mortem. — OC

Quick justice: Court acquits 3 in rape case

Chandigarh, December 15
A local court pronounced the order within 24 hours after the case was presented before it. The court of District and Sessions Judge SK Aggarwal acquitted all the three accused in an alleged rape case reported in August this year.

One of the accused, who was the girl’s guardian, had allegedly helped her husband and son in the rape of an 18-year-old orphan girl at a house in Sector 44. The victim is a native of Meerut in Uttar Pradesh and has been putting up with her guardian in a rented accommodation at Sector 32.

In her statement to the police, the victim had said the two men had been raping her for the past few days with the help of her guardian, who is also a native of Meerut. Her guardian took the victim to the residence of the other accused in Sector 44 where the father-son duo allegedly raped her.

The girl’s guardian had pleaded innocence, claiming that the girl was mentally unstable and she had made false allegations after being instigated by neighbours.

Man kills wife

Chandigarh, December 15
Pinki, a 19-year-old woman, was murdered by her husband, Vikram (23), at her maternal house in Mauli Jagran, Mani Majra, here today. In an attempt to make it look like a suicide, the accused put the body on a bed and locked the room from outside before escaping.

The murder came to light when Dhyanwati, mother of the deceased, opened the room and found Pinki’s body lying on the bed.

DSP (East) Vijay Kumar said the incident took place around 12.15 PM. In the first look, it appeared that the accused tried to give it a shape of suicide.

An orange colour stole, which was used by the accused for strangulating his wife, was also recovered from the spot, he added.

Pinki, along with Vikram, a resident of Jind in Haryana, had come to her maternal house a fortnight ago.

In her statement to the police, Dhyanwati said the accused always used to thrash her daughter.

Earlier in the morning, he had physically abused Pinki when she had failed to cook meal on time, she added.

Two booked for fraud

Chandigarh, December 15
The Economic Offence Wing (EOW) of the UT police today arrested two persons who allegedly duped a man of Rs 4.5 crore on the pretext of purchasing a land in Dera Bassi.

The arrested accused were identified as Vipin Kumar, a resident of Preet Nagar, Dera Bassi, and Bhupinder Pal Singh, a resident of Sector 19, Chandigarh.
DSP Anil Joshi said a case against under various Sections of the IPC had been registered against the duo on the complaint of Sat Parkash, a resident of Chandigarh.

“The complainant stated that the duo lured him to purchase a piece of land in Devi Nagar, Dera Bassi, and took the full payment of Rs 4.5 crore. However, both accused neither purchased the land nor returned the money,” the DSP said.
Both accused have been sent to two-day police remand and further investigations have been initiated. — TNS

Over 300 differently abled athletes participated on the concluding day of the annual athletics meet organised by the local Chapter of Special Olympic Bharat at the Athletic Club, Sector 7, Chandigarh.

Students of Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 27-B, SOREM, Sector 36-C, Asha School, Chandi Mandir, Sadhna Vocational Training Institute, Mani Majra, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 37, Government School, Raipur Khurd, Vatika School, Sector 19, Chandigarh, appeared for various events and competed with each other.

In 100-m walk (12-15 years) Ricky, Anisha and Prateek Sabharwal were declared winners.

In 200-m walk (girls) Anisha, Purnima and Shivani were the winners.

While in 400-m walk (16-21 years), Kulwinder Singh, Rahul Gupta and Aashish Vaid were declared winners, in 400-m run (hearing impaired) Sukman jot, Vikas and Jaspreet were the winners.

Autocross and Motocross Challenge
Biker Abhishek Mishra leads in qualifying round

Chandigarh, December 15
During the qualifying rounds of the Autocross and Motocross-cum-Off Road Challenge-2012 held today at YPS Grounds in Mohali, Bobby Bhogal of Delhi finished the 1.5-km dirt track marked by sharp twists and turns in 1.23 seconds. He was closely followed by Phil Mathaus and Sanjay Sikand, both from Delhi.

In the 4X4 category, Abhishek Mishra from Jaipur led the qualifying rounds today, followed by Pranab Gill and Harpreet Bawa.

Abhishek Mishra, who is also a champion biker, also led in the two-wheelers’ category of the qualifying rounds.

There are a total of 13 categories in the event. The top six qualifiers in each category will vie for the top honours in the finals of the Thunderbolt OYA Autocross and Motocross-2012 Championship to be held tomorrow.
