Dera Bassi: A 22-year-old student of an engineering college in Lalru was killed in a road mishap on the Ambala-Chandigarh highway near here last night. He was returning after meeting his friends here. The deceased, Dilbagh Singh of Ambala Cantonment, was hoi by an unidentified vehicle around 11pm. His body was noticed around 7pm by the police. Banur: The Banur police seized large quantities of poppy husk and other narcotics during a special drive here today. Around 30 kg of poppy husk was recovered from a truck at a checkpost in Jansla. Chandigarh, December 4 Seema Garg, a resident of Modern Enclave, Baltana, complained that the opposite parties, including Neeraj Bansal and his family, did not provide even a single facility as agreed upon. “According to the complainant, she found various deficiencies in the work done by the opposite parties, like there was no underground fitting for taps in the bathroom, filing of foundation was not proper, material used in the floor was not proper and there were no internal connections of electricity wiring in the house,” stated the order. The other inadequacies included lack of water flow from the roof resulting in accumulation of water during rainy season, use of poor quality wood material, improper ratio of cement and sand, normal paint used instead of plastic paint, and unavailability of 24-hour electricity supply, the judgement noted. The complainant made various complaints to the opposite parties, but to no avail. She had to pay from her own pockets to get the works done. The forum has directed Bansal to pay Rs 5,45,600 to the complainant as per the estimates. He has also been directed to pay Rs 50,000 as compensation for mental agony caused to the complainant, and Rs 10,000 as the cost of litigation. |

Two-day remand for four accused
Chandigarh, December 4 The arrested youths include Taranjeet Singh Duggal, a local political leader from Barnala, Gurpreet Singh, Satwant Singh and Mandeep Singh. The court remanded them in police custody for two days. Two revolvers were recovered from their possession. Old rivalry is stated to be the reason behind the attack. The police said the accused, Duggal and Satwant, had opened fire at the other group. He said an FIR was registered and members of both the groups were made accused in one criminal case. The youths, who were in a Scorpio SUV, and residents of Barnala, are still absconding. The accused are involved in the murder of Punjab MLA. |

SBI assn told to compensate complainants
Chandigarh, December 4 The association has been directed to pay Rs 10,000 as compensation and refund the money with interest to the complainants. In the first case, Prem Lata Vig, a resident of Gulmohar Trends, Zirakpur, had deposited a sum of Rs 6,76,500 for the period of 2009-10. The complainant stated that when she approached the opposite party (the association) on the maturity of the FDRs for making payment, the amount was not paid. The forum has directed the association to pay Rs 8,77,721 to the complainant. In the second case, Payal Taunk a Khuda Lohora had deposited a sum of Rs 4,09,100 in January, 2010. She, however, was denied the maturity amount. The forum has now directed the association to pay a sum of Rs 5,02,739 to her. In the other three complaints, Meenakshi, a resident of Khuda Lohora, Amit Chopra, a Zirakpur resident, and Amar Taunk, another resident of Khuda Lahora, were denied the maturity value for the FDR by the State Bank of India Staff Association. Meenakshi had deposited a sum of Rs 4,09,100 in January, 2010. Following the directions of the forum, the association will pay Rs 5,02,739 to the complainant. Amit Chopra, meanwhile, had deposited a sum of Rs1,90,500 with the opposite party for the period from 2008-2009, against which different FDRs were issued. The court has directed the association to pay Rs 2,52,692. Amar Taunk had deposited a sum of Rs 4,09,100 with the opposite party in January, 2010, against which an FDR was issued. He will now receive a sum of Rs 5,02,739. |
