Punjabi varsity bags UGC project
: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has granted a research project on the implementation and impact of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme among weaker sections of Punjab to the Department of Economics, Punjabi University, Patiala. Dr Gian Singh will be principal investigator of the project while Dr Balwinder Singh Tiwana and Dr Sarabjeet Singh will be co-investigators.

Award in ex-PM Gujral’s memory
: Punjabi University, Patiala, will institute an award in the name of former Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral. The decision was taken keeping in view Gujral's distinguished contribution to the fields of public service, diplomacy, international affairs and for furthering the cause of Punjabi culture, Vice-Chancellor Dr Jaspal Singh said on Sunday. The institution had earlier conferred Gujral the degree of Doctorate of Literature (Honoris Causa). Describing the leader as a committed and devoted Punjabi, Singh said the university will also start a special series of lectures on the 'Gujral Doctrine', which deals with India's relations with its neighbours.

Two booked for dowry harassment
: A dowry harassment case has been registered at Sarai Amanat Khan police station here against a mother-son duo of Pandori Gola village. In her complaint to the police, the victim, Manjit Kaur, alleged that her husband Manjinder Singh and mother-in-law Sukhwinder Kaur had been troubling her since long for not getting sufficient dowry. Manjit was married to Manjinder six years ago.

Heroin worth Rs 1 cr recovered: The Patti police has arrested Jagveer Singh and Sahib Singh Saba, both residents of Dasuwal village, 40 km from here, after recovering 294 gm of heroin from their possession. The recovered consignment is worth Rs 1.45 crore in the international market. A case under sections 21, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered against the accused, the police said.

Book released
: Additional Deputy Commissioner Sumedha Kataria released a book, ‘Bhrun Ki Awaj’, written by Kavita Rohilla. Sumedha said female foeticide was a big blot on the society. Although the government had made strict laws against this evil practice, it could not be curbed without the help of people, she said.

Villager killed: Jagmal Singh, a resident of Tigri village, was killed when a speeding truck hit him near a T-point on the Saha road at Shahabad in the district on Saturday. The police has registered a case against the truck driver.

Youth killed in road mishap
: Amit Kumar (22), a resident of Bhalkhi Majra village in the district, was killed when his motorcycle collided with a canter on the Narnaul-Rewari road on Saturday evening. The canter also hit another motorcycle driven by Sanjay, a resident of Nanagwas village in Alwar district of Rajasthan. Seriously injured Sanjay was admitted to a trauma centre here. After the accidents, the canter driver escaped from the spot leaving his vehicle behind.

Cow smuggler hurt in encounter: Sube Khan of Mewat, a cow smuggler, sustained injuries in an encounter with the police when the latter tried to intercept a truck laden with smuggled cows on the Dharuhera-Bhiwadi road at Sohna-T point on Saturday. Khan’s accomplice Ruzdar Khan suffered injuries when he fell into a roadside pit while escaping. The Dharuhera police impounded the vehicle and registered a case against the accused persons.

7-yr-old girl dies: A seven-year-old girl was killed after she was hit by a speeding car. Jyoti Gupta, a resident of Maheshwari village, near Dharuhera, was hit by the vehicle when she was about to cross the road at Bhiwadi Chowk on Saturday evening.

Female foetus recovered
: The police has registered a case after a female foetus was recovered from the Rangoi drain near Bhawdin village in Sirsa on Sunday. Atma Ram, sarpanch of Bhawdin village, brought the matter to the notice of the police after a villager informed him about it. The police sent the foetus to the PGIMS, Rohtak, for a post-mortem examiniation.

1 dies in mishap
: Ram Pal of Jejwin village was killed when a jeep, in which he had earlier taken a lift met with an accident on the bridge of a khud on Saturday night. Ram Pal fell into the water and was drowned. The police has registered a case against driver Dile Raj.

CHAMBA
Desi dhup seized, 2 arrested
: Desi dhup herbs weighing about 8.5 quintals were recovered from the remote Sukku-Ki-Tapri in the district on Sunday. Giving this information, SP, Chamba, BM Sharma said a team of police officials, led by ASI Bansi Lal of Bharmour police station, intercepted a private vehicle carrying desi dhup herbs. A case had been registered and two persons Sudhir and Trilok arrested.

Girls dies after taking poison
: A 15-year-old girl, identified as Mamta Devi of Meseran under Sarkaghat police station, died after she consumed some poison. The police conducted a postmortem at the Sarkaghat hospital and handed over the body to her parents, who ruled out a foul play.

NURPUR
One gets one-year imprisonment
: Vivek Sharma, Judicial Magistrate, First Class, Nurpur, on Friday sentenced Kuku, alias Gafferdeen, of Bhadroya village one-year imprisonment and a fine of Rs 3,000. He had allegedly forced his entry into the victim’s house on night of February 18, 2010, and outraged her modesty. This was stated by Udhay Singh, Additional District Attorney.

Cement bags seized: The Doda Police seized 20 bags of government cement meant for development works of panchayats from Basharat Ali of Bhagwah on Saturday. He was booked under Sections 409, 411 of the RPC.

Bhairav Jayanti celebrations
: A ‘prabhat pheri’ (morning procession) was taken out in the city by the devotees of Kaal Bhairav as part of the week-long Bhairav Jayanti celebrations here today. A large number of devotees took part in the procession. Kaal Bhairav Jayanti falls on December 6, when a special night-long ‘puja’ will be be held. The festival would also be celebrated at the Dhountly Bazar Temple on December 7.

3 officials suspended:
The District Election Officer, Ganderbal, today suspended three officials for dereliction of duty. An official spokesman said an inquiry would be conducted by the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), Ganderbal, against the three suspended officials.

DEHRADUN

Gherao of police station: Kin of Saurabh Bisht, a resident of Chaman Vihar and a BTech student of IMS college, who had been missing since November 7, gheraoed the Raipur police station on Sunday. Saurabh's father Dinesh Chand Bisht accused the police of showing laxity in tracing his son. SP (City) Dileep Kunwar, who reached the site, gave them an assurance to expedite the investigation.

Two held with drugs: The Patel Nagar police on Saturday arrested two persons in separate cases and seized drugs from their possession. While 1.40 kg of drugs were seized from Dilshad Khan at Lohia Nagar, the Nehru Colony police seized 1.35 kg of drugs from the possession of Suraj Thapa.
