Bathinda, November 17 The chief guest at the zonal level legal literacy festival held at the Adesh University today, Justice Jasbir Singh's speech enlightened many minds. The event started with the students of Baru Sahib Academy reciting a shabad 'Deh Shiva Bar Mohe'. District and Sessions Judge, Moga, Karamjit Singh welcomed the chief guest Justice Jasbir Singh and Justice Rakesh Kumar Jain, administrative judge of the Sessions Division, Bathinda, who presided over the function. Speaking on the occasion, Jain expressed concern over increasing problem of drug addiction in the state. He said there were over 500 inmates languishing in the Bathinda jail, which clearly shows how alarming the menace was in the state. The secretary of the District Legal Services Authority, Ferozepur, Jaspal Verma, delivered the keynote address. Verma said legal literacy clubs were being opened in every senior secondary school and college. He added that an army of paralegal volunteers was being trained to create legal awareness among general masses. He said mega Lok Adalats were being held in all the districts on December 15 wherein litigants could bring their cases, which were in pre-litigation stage or were even being contested in courts. Meanwhile, the winners of the zonal level contest presented their respective creations. Gurdeep Singh from Government Barjindra College, Faridkot, recited a poem on female foeticide. Prachi from Gopichand Arya Mahila College of Education, Abohar, delivered a speech on crime against women while Tarun Pal Singh from Baba Farid College of Law, Faridkot, presented a PowerPoint presentation on environment protection. In the slogan writing competition, Anupam Singh from Hans Raj Memorial College of Education, Faridkot, secured the first place, Ramandeep Kaur from Guru Nanak Dev Khalsa College stood second and Arunjit Kaur from Panjab University Regional Centre, Muktsar, bagged the third spot. In the photography contest, Sarabjot Singh from Government Rajindra College, Bathinda, Jaspreet Kaur from Satyam College of Education, Moga, and Sumanpreet Kaur from Baba Banda Singh Bahadur College of Nursing, Faridkot, secured the first, second and third places, respectively. In the poster-making competition, Shruti Batta from Baba Farid Law College, Faridkot, Sukhwinder Kaur from Gopi Chand Arya Mahila College, Abohar, and Divya Bansal from DAV College, Bathinda, stood first, second and third, respectively. In the PowerPoint presentation, Tarun Pal Singh stood first, followed by Vipandeep of JD College of Education, Muktsar, and Himani of Dev Samaj College for Women, Ferozepur. In the declamation contest, Manpreet Kaur from Guru Nanak College, Moga, Prachi from Gopichand Arya Mahila College, Abohar, and Dhanwinder Kaur from University College of Nursing, Faridkot, secured the first, second and third places, respectively. In the documentary-making competition, Davinder Kaur, Harpreet Kaur and Shivali Malhotra from Sant Darbara Singh College of Education secured the first place. Ramandeep Kaur, Palak Rana, Charul Jain and Diksha Sharma from SSD Girls' College stood second while Inderjit Singh, Jaspal Singh, Purva and Sandeep Singh from DM College of Education, Moga, were adjudged third. In the poetry recitation contest, Gurdeep Singh from Government Barjindra College, Faridkot, Amandeep Singh from Satyam College of Eductaion, Moga, and Bharat Bhushan from Baba Mangal Singh Institute of Eductaion, Moga, secured the first, second and third places, respectively. In the skit competition, a team from Government Rajindra College secured the first place. Government College of Education, Faridkot, secured the second place and DAV College, Bathinda, secured the third place in the competition. Students from Mansa, Bathinda, Muktsar, Faridkot Moga, Fazilka and Ferozepur participated in the festival. Bathinda, November 27 The residents of the area had complained that water was dirty and emitted foul smell. The drinking water supplied was getting mixed with sewage owing to leakage problems. District Health Officer Dr RS Randhawa said three samples of water had been collected from different households and the same would be sent for testing to a laboratory in Chandigarh. A team headed by sanitary inspector Sukhchain Singh visited the locality and conducted a door-to-door survey of around 283 households. “Our prime concern was to detect cases of fever, diarrhoea and dysentery. We found none of them and no one from the locality had reported for treatment at the Civil Hospital,” he said. Besides, the health department team also distributed around 400 sachets of chlorine for water purification. People were also urged to boil water for consumption purposes. |
Punjab state rural games to kick off today
Bathinda, November 17 The sports department is organizing the games in collaboration with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) under the Panchayat Yuva Krida Aur Khel Abhiyan (PYKKA) scheme, said Director, Sports, Dular Singh Dhillon. In a press statement issued here, Dhillon said as many as 2200 participants are expected to take part and 200 officials have been deputed for the smooth conduct of the games in 11 disciplines. The Director, Sports, further added that the selected players would be placed in camps for intensive training prior to their participation in the forthcoming National Rural Sports Meet. He also informed that the department had conducted the Punjab State Games for boys in the under-16 category at Hoshiarpur. Dhillon said most sporting talent lies in the villages and keeping this in view, the Government of India has launched the scheme. The main aim of the scheme is to develop playgrounds in the villages to encourage sportsmen and women, to develop sports infrastructure and provide equipment, to give an opportunity to participate in block, district and state level competitions and to provide training to the players for competitions at all levels. Giving details, Dhillon said the 11 disciplines in which competitions will be held are athletics, basketball, boxing, hockey, handball, judo, kho kho, kabaddi, volleyball, weightlifting and wrestling. For overseeing the arrangements, Jasvirpal Kaur Brar has been deputed as the nodal officer. Brar said grounds for all the games are ready. The handball event will be held at St. Xavier's School, athletics, kabaddi, kho-kho, wrestling, judo, volleyball and boxing at the Multipurpose Sports Stadium, hockey at Government Rajindra College, basketball at Khalsa Senior Secondary School and the weightlifting competition will be held at the Barbarian Club. Deputy Commissioner Kamal Kishor Yadav said all the arrangements for accommodation, catering, transportation, medicare and security have been finalized. He also informed that ADC (D) Mohammad Tayyab will coordinate with the sports department regarding the arrangements. Tayyab said teams from all the 22 districts have been lodged at different venues for a comfortable stay. The Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala and Faridkot teams will stay at the Guru Nanak Thermal Plant Special School. The Mohali, Ferozepur and Barnala teams will stay at MHR Public School. Gurdaspur, Tarn Taran and Nawanshahr teams will put up at Adarsh School in Canal Colony. The Patiala and Fazilka teams will stay at St. Xavier's Senior Secondary School; Jalandhar, Muktsar and Fatehgarh Sahib teams will stay at Police Public School; Moga and Ropar teams will stay at Delhi Public School; Amritsar team will stay at National Public School, Ludhiana, Mansa in Mount Litera School, Pathankot and Sangrur at the Millennium School while the Bathinda team has been lodged at the Multipurpose Sports Stadium. SSP, Bathinda, Ravcharan Singh Brar said security arrangements for the opening and closing ceremonies have been made. District Sports Officer, Bathinda, Karam Singh said all venues are ready for the games. The opening and closing ceremonies will take place at the multipurpose sports stadium. Punjab Minister for Irrigation Janmeja Singh Sekhon would be the chief guest at the opening ceremony tomorrow while Education Minister Sikandar Singh Maluka would be the chief guest at the closing ceremony on November 20. Bathinda, November 17 Various committees have been formed to supervise the arrangements, Deputy Commissioner KK Yadav said. Presiding over a meeting of various heads of departments, the DC said the committees would implement the work allocated during the World Cup. The DC said since eminent personalities, sportsmen, VVIPs and other important persons from all over the world would arrive for the inaugural function, arrangements would be made as per the requirements. Rs 80,000 withdrawn from ATM after swapping card
Bathinda, November 17 Investigating officer in the case, Charanjit Singh at the Rama police station, said though the complainant is qualified with an M.Tech degree, he did not know how to operate the ATM card. While punching the card, he sought help from an unidentified person and also revealed his password to him. The unidentified person noted down the password and swapped his ATM card with that of the complainant. The accused managed to withdraw money to the tune of Rs 80,000 from his account at different ATMs. The complainant came to know about the missing money only later, the investigating officer said. He said a case under section 420 of the IPC has been registered in this connection at the Rama police station. The investigating officer said efforts are on to identify the accused by extracting the recording in the CCTV camera of the bank where the ATM cards were interchanged by the accused. Man booked for slapping girl in Amarpura Basti
Police have registered a case against a resident of Amarpura Basti for slapping a girl. In a complaint to the police, Rajpreet Kaur said the accused Jagsir Singh slapped his daughter, Pooja, after barging into her house on Tuesday evening. The complainant said after slapping the girl, the accused also injured her. Some neighbours brought the matter to the notice of the police and the accused was taken to the police station where a case under sections 452 and 324 of the IPC was registered at the Canal Colony police station. A case under sections 363 and 366 of the IPC has been registered against the accused at the Nehianwala police station. Police have registered a case against two persons for beating up a resident of Kaile Wander. Mandar Singh complained to the police, accusing Geli Singh and Kal Singh, of beating him up over an old dispute. The complainant said the accused attacked him while he was going to his house in the village. A case under sections 325, 323 and 34 of the IPC has been registered against the accused at the Talwandi Sabo police station. No arrests have been made by the police so far. In another similar incident, policemen at Talwandi Sabo police station registered a case against Bablu, Bhura, Bangi, Chhinderpal and Karnail Singh for beating up Bhura Singh, a resident of Jiwan Singh Wala village. Bathinda, November 17 Sahara volunteer Ram Singh died in a road accident six years ago on December 4. President of the NGO, Vijay Goyal, said the nominations can be sent to the office of the NGO in Dhobi Bazar, before December 5. The AIDS patient undergoing treatment at Bathinda Civil Hospital has died. Vikram Singh (35) was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition. Volunteers of Sahara Jan Sewa said the family was extended a helping hand by the NGO for treatment. The volunteers helped in cremating the body as the family was too poor to even arrange for their daily needs. |
Special trainers take out protest rally
Bathinda, November 17 Harpinder Kaur, a special trainer teacher, is on hunger strike for the last five days and her condition is said to be deteriorating because of the hunger strike. State committee members of the union, Gurpartap Singh said they would intensify their agitation if the government failed to look into the pending demands of the teachers. Jagjeet Singh, Sikandar Singh, Deepak, Anakhbeer Singh, Charanjit Singh, Manpreet Kaur, Reshma Rani and others were present on the occasion. The special trainer teachers, work under the Sarv Shiksha Abhiyaan (SSA), and were appointed in the state to teach out-of-school children in the age group of 7 to 14 years. These teachers covered 13,958 children in state from all the 21 districts. |
Shop gutted in Rampura
Bathinda, November 17 Aman, the owner of a digital studio, said he left the shop at around 9 pm. One of his neighbours called him up at 2.30 am and informed him about smoke emanating from the shop. The fire brigade was called in and the flames were doused. The shop owner said that an LCD TV, computer, scanner, video and still cameras got damaged in the fire. |
