City in dire need of dedicated protest site
Politically significant, city witnesses protest every other day holding up traffic much to the inconvenience of commuters

Bathinda, November 9
An urgent need for a dedicated site to hold protests is being felt in Bathinda city that has been witnessing a series of protests for being part of a VIP constituency.

Every time a group of people take out protest rallies, they end up clogging the traffic on the city roads.

The city is perhaps bearing the brunt of falling in the constituency of the first family of the state. For this very reason, the city witnesses frequent incidents of traffic being held to ransom as an arm-twisting measure.

From discontented teachers of the Education Department to the linesmen of the Power Department, almost every kind of association or union has held a protest in the city.

The latest to join the protest bandwagon are the organisations protesting against the state government in the Shruti abduction case. Though the protest was peaceful and the police had diverted traffic at various places, its movement around the city caused traffic jams.

"The common man is the worst hit. Most of the protests take place when schoolchildren are going back home. Already, the city roads are not wide enough to hold the growing traffic and such protests only aggravate the situation," said Santosh Kumari, the mother of a student of Lord Rama School near Hanuman Chowk here.

The city bus stand, the Hanuman Chowk and the area opposite the District Administrative Complex are the hotspots for protesters, all lying on the GT road.

Any obstacle in the way of traffic on these spots leads to long queues of vehicles blowing horns and most of the time, school students, the elderly and patients get caught in the melee.

A traffic expert, Harman Sidhu from Chandigarh, said sites for protests should be earmarked to ensure that the traffic was not interrupted in any manner. "Earmarking the sites will also be helpful to the protesters who sometimes end up facing lathi-charge," he said.

He added that a cue could be taken from the Chandigarh UT administration that had dedicated the grounds in Sector 25 for staging protests.

A couple of years ago, Chandigarh's Matka Chowk used to be the popular place for protests, which caused great inconvenience to the traffic moving on the road.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Kamal Kishore Yadav said the need for a dedicated spot for protesters was indeed being felt in the city.

"We had identified three places which can be marked as a protest site. Before we could zero in on a single site, the SSP was shifted. Now, the new SSP has joined and we will again take up the issue," he said.

Appreciating the initiative of school students, the ASP also asked them to encourage their elderly relatives and family members not to use any kinds of drugs or alcohol on the festival of lights.

Govt school students to lend voice to their talent, concerns on AIR every Sunday
Tribune News Service

Bathinda, November 9
Government school students are being given an opportunity to present programmes on AIR FM Bathinda with an aim to boost their confidence.

The additional director of the Sarv Shiksha Abhiyaan (SSA), Parampal Kaur Maluka, said all government schools would be given opportunities to present their programme on the show 'Nikke Nikke Ambar' broadcast every Sunday from 9 am to 10 am.

"The FM, Bathinda, has recorded two shows of students of government schools situated at Maluka and Hamirgarh villages. The programme of Maluka school students will be broadcast on November 11 and that of Hamirgarh will be broadcast on November 18," she said.

During the show, students will present poems, stories and songs.

Maluka said once the show gains momentum, competitions would be held.

"Government schools usually do not have enough funds to hold annual functions or observe other occasions. Performing at the local radio stations will give children memorable moments that they would take pride in during the later part of their lives," she added.

There are four radio stations in Punjab. While two are at Jalandhar, Bathinda and Patiala have one radio station each. Each station will be attached to six or more districts enabling students to raise social issues and other concerns through the radio.

Tune in to AIR FM, Bathinda, at 101.1 MHz, to listen to the children on Sunday.

Bathinda, November 9
Her disability notwithstanding, 28-year-old Kiran Sharma is rejoicing the birth of her second daughter.

Polio-afflicted Kiran was blessed with a baby girl on November 4 at the Madaan Nursing Home where her family celebrated the occasion and distributed sweets.

"It was very unusual to see such celebrations. Usually people do not feel happy to have a second girl child in this Malwa belt, which is infamous for skewed sex ratio. Kiran and her in-laws' reaction came as a pleasant surprise for all of us," says Dr Usha Madaan, a gynecologist.

Kiran's lower limbs are afflicted with polio, which does not enable her to move freely. During pregnancy, owing to increased weight in womb, she used to come for ante-natal check-up crawling.

"It was a heart-rending sight. But Kiran always had that signature smile and enthusiasm writ large on her face," said one of the patients at hospital.

Kiran and her husband Amar Sharma have a seven-year-old daughter Shruti. Their second child, a pre-term baby, could not survive. With the new family member, the couple is now content and looking forward to bringing up the two girls. Kiran has voluntarily undergone tubectomy.

"We don't want more children. God has given us enough and we are happy. Nothing would have been possible without the support of my mother-in-law Urmila," she said.

Dr Madaan said in the times when even normal women are reluctant to undergo a family planning operation, Kiran has set an example for others to follow.

The hospital has waived Kiran’s medical bills and presented her a tricycle.
