Major relief for traders

In a major relief for traders and shopkeepers, the UT Administration has allowed them to make minor additions and alterations for internal partitions in upper floors of SCOs in the city without sanction from the estate office. Earlier, to make minor alterations inside upper floors of SCOs, the building owner had to get the building plan resanctioned from the estate office.

Women artistes to add colour to Ramlila
Chandigarh, October 14
The male-centric Ramlila will see many women artistes playing women characters this year. The roles of Sita, Mandodari, Surpanakha, Kaikai, Kaushalya, Sumitra and other women characters of the Ramayana will be played by three women artistes in the Sector 28 Ramlila, being organised by the Garhwal Ramlila Mandal.

He is equally at ease on stage as he is in his office. Not many in Panchkula know that their ‘Ram’, who is meeting them for the past 32 years during Ramlila and Dasehra, is a senior officer with the Haryana Government. Pawan Sharma is playing the role of Rama for the past thirty-two years and this time Saurabh Sharma, 26, son of Pawan Sharma, will be playing the role of Lord Rama.

Run over by car, PEC student dies at PGI
Chandigarh, October 14
Reckless driving by a PEC student on the campus has claimed the life of a young girl student. Charu Mehta (21), a student of PEC, was injured after she was run over by a car, being driven by another student, on the campus on Thursday.

Expressing shock and grief over the death of their only daughter, Ajay Mehta, Charu's father, said he got his daughter to stay in the college hostel so that she was saved of the daily traffic hassles.

Spread of dengue belies UT’s claims
Chandigarh, October 14
The alarming number of dengue cases reported in the city has brought to light the hollow claims of the UT health department about the initiation of “effective” preventive measures to control the disease. Though the officials claim to have initiated regular fumigation in the city ahead of the rainy season, more than 123 residents have been afflicted with dengue this year, against 73 cases last year.

Kartarpur to house memorial to freedom fighters, says Badal
Mohali, October 14
A memorial to the freedom fighters of the country will be set up at Kartarpur, near Jalandhar, said Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, here today. Badal, who was speaking on the concluding day of a three-day gurmat Samagam, organised by the Gurmat Ruhani Mission Charitable Trust in Badmajra village, said the memorial would be set up on 25 acres of land.

Despite the ban on sand mining by the High Court, illegal mining still continue at the bed of Ghaggar river. The Dera Bassi and Banur police have booked four persons for illegal sand mining at Ghaggar river and impounded three trolleys and one said laden truck.

A 45-year-old man was found dead in a room of a hotel in Industrial Area last night. The victim, Harmnder Singh, a resident of Delhi, was an alumnus of Guru Nanak Secondary School, Mussoorie.

A UT police constable, who was posted with a Police Control Room (PCR) vehicle, was found drunk on duty last night. The constable, Amarjjeet Singh, was in the PCR van near the Kishangarh roundabout at Mani Majra when he was found drunk.
