Tall claims of the Northern Railway authorities of tightening noose around touts operating at the railway reservation centre have fallen flat as a nexus of touts, middlemen and even unscrupulous travel agents still thrives as far as securing railway reservation in long route trains is concerned.

Hike in bus fare pinches common man’s pocket

Adding to the burden of the common man, the Punjab Government has announced an increase in bus-fares. The general secretary of the Small-Scale Bus Operator Association, JS Grewal said that the prices were increased following the meeting of bus operators, with the Transport Minister, Punjab, a few days ago.

A couple from Roorkee in Haridwar has been booked for forgery after a cheque worth Rs 4.73 lakh bounced due to insufficient balance in the account.

3 booked in hit-and-run case

The city police has booked the son of a policeman in a hit-and-run case that resulted in the death of a youth recently. The policeman and the dummy driver have also been booked for forgery, destroying of evidence and criminal conspiracy.

More than 200 players of 16 colleges throughout the state have been participating in the Punjab Collage's Basketball Leagues at the Guru Nanak Stadium, Ludhiana, but due to poor infrastructure at the stadium, players are facing inconvenience.

English quiz
On the lines of the popular show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’, TCY organised a quiz “Kaun Banega Canadian” at its BetterThink division. More than 150 students participated in the quiz which tested English language knowledge of the IELTS students of various centres of BetterThink. The participants were given 20 minutes to answer 10 questions. The questions were based on proverbs, idioms, synonyms and antonyms. Three winners were selected from each centre. The centre coordinator, Komal, distributed the prizes to the winners and congratulated them.

Memorandum submitted
United Cycle and Parts Manufacturers Association (UCPMA) submitted a memorandum to Darshan Singh Sra, joint director general of foreign trade. “Industry is going through a recession and industrialists and exporters are facing acute problems. In order to facilitate the industry to function smoothly, we gave some suggestions to the JDGFT,’ said Gurmeet Singh Kular, president of UCPMA. VAT refund period should be reduced from three months to one month and if transaction based some methodology can be worked out it would be beneficial for the exporters, said members of UCPMA. Forms such as C/H/BRC should be demanded at the time of final VAT assessment.

One-way traffic need of the hour
Thanks to the slack enforcement of traffic regulations and utter lack of road sense among majority of the motorists, the city roads have become even more congested. To reduce congestion, the city traffic police has to work very hard. It needs to implement one-way traffic rule on major roads of the city. There has been a long-pending demand for enforcing one-way traffic rule on T-point at Domoria Bridge Road. Such a demand has been raised by the residents for the stretch of road which connects Deepak Cinema Road to Mata Rani Chowk through Bhadaur House. To ease the traffic flow, one-way traffic rule also should be implemented on a couple of roads around Kailsah Cinema and Old Sessions Chowk.
