It’s time for the Spring Summer Collection 2013 at Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week. Here are a few trends that can turn heads even as coral is the colour for the next season…
Pret-ty cool
Ashima Batish

To begin with, couture might have introduced Indian fashion to the world but it is prêt that helped the West get familiar with the East. The silhouettes more or less remained the same, the colours varied in a shade; what helped Indian prêt build an identity was its traditional works that were showcased on the ramp by our fashion designers. As the Spring Summer collection 2013 at Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week celebrates the pret of the country once again, here is some mid-week trend-spotting!

ashima@tribunemail.com

Silhouettes & structure

What laces did to the fashion scene last year, cutwork and applique is expected to repeat the same next year. Manish Gupta indulged in the intricate cutwork to the extent that he didn’t just add it in patches, but on the whole. The colours of his collection were all pastels only to ensure that the focus remains on the brilliant craftsmanship. And he didn’t fail at that.

Kartikeya and Isha limited the use to patches but they were all over, accompanied by the frills and layers. Rahul Mishra created a balance between hand-work and hand-woven fabrics. Another selling point of his collection was that it was all organic.

The reversible jackets again confirmed why Rahul is a ‘much-in-demand’ designer even in the retail sector. Use of Chanderies and Maheshwaries was not only aimed at helping the weavers, but also to make the fabric bounce back on the fashion scene. Nachiket Barve’s extravagant appliqué and cutwork, on the blouses, yolk, near the helmline of saree, on the borders of pallu, even peplum tops…it was just everywhere in bits and pieces in his collection titled Hacienda.

Soothing coral, blazing blue

Instead of picking names that chose coral for their collections, it’s far easier to pick names that didn’t. Almost everyone made its proper use and the ‘colour of the season’ became apparent. Spring-summer might be about pastels every year, but coral will be the new white next summer. Count Gaurav Gupta, Namrata Joshipura, Prerna Bhardwaj, Rahul Mishra and Alpana and Neeraj… designers have invested pretty much in cobalt. While it used to signify danger, next season if you don’t have one, there will be the danger of being called the non-follower of fashion! Then there is a cobalt club. Members are Manish Malhotra, Anupama Dayal and Rahul Mishra whose collection’s name The Nile and Kalinga makes the colour choice obvious.

Like man, like woman

There are more representatives of androgynous fashion than just the ‘kohl-rimmed-eyes’ of fashion designer Kallol Datta. Divyam Mehta’s collection Spring Creak was a class on how to tie a piece of cloth differently; the prop used was a male model and how he walked the ramp with kohl-smudged eyes and ruffled skirt! The colour served the purpose further — pink. Arjun Saluja did some value-addition with his flowing and straight-fitted skirts.

Sheer & sensuality

Earlier this year, Varun Bahl and Manish Malhotra Mizwan played with the translucent quality of the fabric at the Couture Week. At this fashion week too, it continued unapologetically in the designs by Nachiket Barve. Sheer lets the fashion balance between ‘bare-it-all’ and ‘cover-it all’! White, off-white and green combination of Taramati Collection by Anand Kabra upped the aesthetic and sex appeal of his collection at the same time. Fashion designer duo Gaurav and Ritika used net on the bottom of their creations.

nature inspired

There is nothing new in fashion designers getting inspired by nature. Gaurav Gupta’s collection In A Cathode is inspired from the jungles of Sequoia.

Alpana Neeraj’s collection is inspired by the frozen ends of the earth. They have used whites and azure in abundance. Even the patterns they have used resemble the ferns of the frozen world.

Flowering shrubs near the pool provide visual relief

Go for simple outdoor furniture.
Pool in: Flowering shrubs near the pool provide visual relief (top); Go for simple outdoor furniture.

Deciding to put a swimming pool in your own backyard is one decision that most people never regret. Swimming is considered one of the healthiest and most effective forms of exercise.

Not only that, it is therapeutic for those who suffer from arthritis or are suffering from some physical injury. Landscaping around the pool can be a bit tricky if you don’t keep in mind the basics. Your backyard pool landscaping should reflect your entertainment style and yet be personalised. Keep in mind the following points before you set out to design a plan for the landscaping –

nChoose your plants wisely. You need to have a few trees that provide shade. Pool landscaping should include some shade either nearby on the pool’s pad or at one end of the water; trees should have less-aggressive root systems and should shed less.

nPlant a bed of colourful flowers near the pool to provide colour and visual relief. If your landscaping includes a lot of natural rocks, it is recommended that you fill in the spaces with plants to soften the look.

nUse evergreen hedges if you want a formal look around your pool. These provide a formal appearance when planted in a row or around structures like swimming pools.

nSince the pool is just so horizontal, add height by constructing planter boxes higher than the surface of the pool.

nChoose low-water-use plants that will not require heavy irrigation around the pool. Too much water can damage your pool decking.

nIf you choose to plant cacti, plant them far away from the path to prevent accidental injury to people or damage to beach balls.

nPool landscaping also should include structures such as pergolas and trellises.

nPlace containers planted with climbing vines at the base of a pergola. The vines will soften the hard-scape and lead the eye upward.

nUse outdoor furniture that compliments the landscape style of your pool.

nGood outdoor lighting is both functional and aesthetic; it offers the right kind of light when and where you need it for entertaining or just relaxing. At the same time, proper lighting adds to the beauty of the pool area by highlighting architectural features and background plantings.

nFor safety issues, especially if you have small children, construct a fence with a lockable gate. In case privacy is your main concern, you may increase the height of the fence and use one with slats close together.

nThe shower cubicles and changing room should not be too far from the pool and should be cleverly concealed either with a screen or high hedges.

nYou will need a storage unit to store all the chemicals, loungers, tubes, toys etc.

nLandscaping can play an important role in ‘hiding’ this storage area.

nSo go ahead and create a relaxing retreat for yourselves right in your backyards!

Celeb Point
To sir, with love
Divya Dutta

As I opened the invite, I had a bright smile and I knew I had to most definitely make it there. It’s Amitabh Bachchan’s 70th birthday celebration. Nothing less than extraordinary! It’s the legend, the mega-star, the angry young man, the Shahenshah celebrating his 70th birthday! And what a journey!

His peers and colleagues have either retired or doing limited work. Mr Bachchan rediscovered himself at every step and whenever he comes on screen, he lights it up and how! His cameo in English Vinglish is a delight to watch. It leaves you wanting more, leaves you with a smile. He does it the way only he can! No one, yes no one has that charisma and that star power.

Amitabh Bachchan has always risen above tough situations and shone in all situations. From his accident in 1981, fighting death, fighting flop films and then fighting a very low phase, but he emerged a winner always! Yes always! He talks to his participants and charms them in a way only he can! And he is truly humble. Being where he is, it’s tough to be that.

I’ve grown up tearing mom’s dupattas and tying them around my waist and dancing to Khaike paan banaras wala as a kid. And telling all who do care to listen that I want to be Amitabh Bachchan!

At the press conference for Last Lear, Mr Bachchan said I was his family’s favourite in the film. And I narrated him my childhood story, it was a full circle for me.

I first shot with him for Baghbaan. I used to feel terrible about being so nasty to him in the film and he used to pull me up all the time. He used to joke—“Get me a hockey stick. She’s very mean to me.”

Then once I picked up the phone and that magical baritone left me speechless. He called himself to invite me for Diwali. How sweet was that! How touching for someone who looks up to him and how! Yes, he is special. Very special. For the actor he is, the star he is, the legend he is, and the way he makes everyone feel so special!

I am excited to be part of his birthday celebrations as he recites his father’s Madhushala. The way only he can! Yes Amitji, you do us proud. You inspire us and we love you. Happy birthday, sir!

GET PHYSICAL
The art of controlling
Anil juneja

Anger is a completely normal, usually healthy, human emotion. But when it gets out of control and turns destructive, it can lead to problems in almost every aspect of life and can make you feel as though you’re at the mercy of an unpredictable emotion. This type of unhealthy behaviour can take a toll on the body and spirit and leave you feeling depressed, unfocused and suffering from unexpected physical problems. There is no need to prolong your suffering and feel depressed. Practice of yoga and meditation helps you to calm down and control your anger. Yoga and meditation teaches us the art of controlling and the art of silence. Colour meditation is one way of doing it.

Colour meditation

To start with, sit in any comfortable posture— padmasana, siddhasana or sukhasana. Make your breathing normal. Those who are unable to sit down can sit on a chair and do the breathing exercises. However, sitting down in a proper yogic posture is most beneficial.

Start by concentrating and focus on the centre of your forehead. Now, allow your mind to penetrate inside to perceive the bright white colour there. Feel the bright white light of the full moon spreading throughout the portion or visualise the bright white colour of the snow or any other white colour inside. Practice visualisation of bright white colour.

Now, slowly allow your mind to spread throughout the whole portion of your forehead and perceive the bright white colour of the full moon there. Visualise that the particles of bright white light colour are permeating the whole portion of the forehead, covering the emotional area in the frontal lobe of your brain. Continuously perceive bright white colour and experience complete tranquility, mental peace and bliss. Conclude the meditation session with two or three long breaths.

Perception of breathing

Another technique to control your anger is Pran Dharna, also known as belly breathing. To start with, sit in any comfortable posture— padmasana, siddhasana or sukhasana. Make your breathing normal. Make it slow, deep and rhythmic. Let the vibration of each breath reach the naval. Now, allow the abdominal muscles to expand during inhalation. Concentrate your mind fully on your naval. Start perceiving each inhalation and exhalation through the expansion and contraction of the abdominal muscles accompanying each inhalation and exhalation respectively. You must continuously practice slow, deep and rhythmic breathing and perceive it. Use deep concentration and remain alert. Continuing the slow, deep and rhythmic breathing, now shift your attention from the naval and focus it inside the nostrils. Perceive each incoming and outgoing breath. Continuously practice slow, long and rhythmic breathing. Inhale and exhale while remaining fully aware of it. These techniques not only help us to control anger and depression but also excitement and anxiety. It is equally beneficial for blood pressure, heart and migraine patients. Besides all this, they can be done anytime and anywhere.

it’s rocking
Booming energy

Ajab Gazzab Love is yet another upcoming rom-com with a young and fresh star cast. Jackky Bhagnani is back with a bang opposite Nidhi Subbaiah. Jackky looks super cool in the track Boom Boom. The soundtrack kicks off with a bang as Mika Singh’s rocking voice complements the catchy beat. It’s engaging because of its good techno beats and cheeky lyrics by Priya Panchal. It also has a remixed version, which has some more beats thrown in here and there. Sajid-Wajid have quite beautifully blended the sound of loud claps with modern techno instruments to make the song even more enjoyable.

Get floored!

Mika’s energetic voice just forces one to get on the floor and shake a leg. It’s better to stick with the original, though one can try the remixed version as well. I just love dancing to this party number. I’m so addicted to it.

Gaurav Saini, student, GGDSD College

Feel-good factor

This track is peppy and a party number that makes me feel happy and also prompts me to show some fun moves on the dance floor. The lyrics are also very entertaining and the youngsters can relate to it very well.

Priya Gupta, MBA student, PU

Funky but fun

The track is full of life. The funky lyrics by Priya Panchal justify the song setting. This is definitely a club outing and is full of energy which is a nice treat for the party hoppers.

Nidhi Bhullar, housewife

War of the words

Filmmakers Karan Johar and Ram Gopal Varma are known for their love-hate relationship. The two have often got in a war of words. Now RGV, who recently watched the trailer of Student Of The Year, has mocked Karan once again.

“Student of the Year truly really and honestly looks like it’s the best film of Karan Johar and the bestest film of Indian cinema ever. I love the sheer never before seen imagery and the extraordinary originality and even more extraordinary directorial brilliance,” he tweeted.

“I don't know about Student Of The Year but I would want to be a student for life of Karan Johar’ss cinema. A Karan Johar film institute is any day a far better option than Subhash Ghai Gibhash Ghai and Pune gune film institutes. I rate Karan Johar far far more higher than Mehboob Khan, V. Shantaram, Raj Kapoor, Guru Dutt and Bimal Roy,” he added. Well, over to you Karan!

Meanwhile choreographer-director-actress Farah Khan, who has knocked off 10 kilos so far, is keen on losing more weight. “Got up ths morning thnking "gym jaana hain"!is this how madness starts??bachao!” she wrote. To which actor Arjun Rampal replied: “gym jaa, you looking damn good with all the weight u lost, looking like the Farah I met 20 years ago.”

Video of the month

A new video from Student of The Year is out and it is called Ratta Maar. While the other songs feature Alia Bhatt, Siddharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan, this one also features Sana Saeed and Kayoze Irani.

All shed and done

Vikram Bhatt has signed on Chitrangda Singh for an upcoming thriller. It is said that the movie will have her shed her art-house heroine image. We hope it is a hit.

So far, the lady has been largely associated with offbeat cinema. It is high time, she shed that image and did some mainstream roles.

Meet the voice behind Iktara …

Kavita Seth created waves with the song Iktara, from the film Wake Up Sid! The soulful song has been on everyone's play list since then. Recently, the songstress had us swinging to the peppy and foot-tapping number Tum Hi Ho Bandhu from the film Cocktail. The soft-spoken lady talks about music, Bollywood and more.

How would you describe your journey in popular Bollywood music?

I would say it has been beautiful and full of different things that I have learnt. I don't think I could have asked for more than what has come to me.

How has your life changed after Tum Hi Ho Bandhu? How did that song come to you?

It certainly has! As they say, innovation is the key to success. I think it is completely applicable to this song. I was very apprehensive initially. Now I am more flexible as a singer.

Are there any actresses you would like to sing for?

I would like to sing for all of them! I have no specifications as such. I never knew my voice would ever suit talented actresses like Frieda Pinto, Konkona Sen and now Diana Penty. I like this unpredictability. It keeps me away from being restrictive.

Can you tell us more about your private music healing album Om?

You will know better if you hear it. The album consists of Om Jaap 150 times, which is a regular practice in the morning in every Indian home. You just have to listen to it with your eyes shut.

What is your advice to upcoming singers?

I just have one thing to say: "Don't follow trends, create one for yourself."

Aamir’s two timing!

Aamir Ali, who is seen in two TV shows, currently is enjoying this high phase of his career. Here he talks about his career and more...

How is it doing two shows at a time?

Quite hectic. I run from one show to the other and have to travel a lot. I have never done so much in my life. Yet it is different and fun too.

It’s been over a year that you have been on FIR…

Yes, it’s been a year and half. I can’t tell you how glad I am that I took up the show. The vibe on the sets is superb, the team is fantastic. In fact, I was scared of doing a comedy show but I let my fear aside and went ahead. I want to try new things in my career and FIR paid off.

Post your cool role in I Hate Luv Storys, we haven’t seen you in films. Why?

I took a small break post it and was waiting for good offers. I look for a substantial role, the medium doesn’t matter. So when I got FIR I was happy. I am in touch with people in film industry and when something good comes up I will do it. For now, both these shows are taking up my time.

In Honge Juda Na Hum, it was announced that you are the surprise element. But we hardly see you on the show.

Yes, the makers wanted to keep my character a surprise and I shot for a bit. But I knew it was a cameo. Recently I was out of town, so didn’t shoot much. My role will soon develop on the show.

Do you feel insecure with new blood entering TV industry?

No. I am confident of my talent and have been around for a while now. When makers want new faces, they will cast newbies and when they want established actors they will think of me. What I love about TV is that there is space for everyone.

Do you and your wife Sanjeeda want to work together?

Yes sure. If something suitable came up, then why not.

For the sake of Buddy-hood

Popular actor Manav Gohil, who has done shows like Kahani Ghar Ghar ki, Kkusum, CID, Saara Aakash, Saarthi, is back in television. He is playing the handsome teacher Anirudh Jaitley in Sunshine Production’s show The Buddy Project. The audience has already started liking him and he seems to be just apt for the role.

“I play a successful investment banker, Anirudh Jaitley who was popular as Junglee Jaitley in his school days. When Anirudh goes to visit Royal Academy School, he realises that the school is going through a crises. To bring back the old glory to the school he becomes a teacher.”

There was a time when Manav kept away from television. So what was the reason? “I was not getting the right role. I was ready to compromise on other things but not my role. Yes, there were a few times when I liked the role but money was not enough. Finally all aspects were met in this project and I could take this up.”

Manav had to shed a few kilograms and also saw many films based on teacher-student relationship for reference. “I have seen films like Dead Poet Society, Hip Hip Hooray. I have taken definitely few pointers from those films. But Professor Junglee is not like any other characters people have seen so far. Few mannerisms of the teachers are there which is common. Junglee is very loud with his hand gestures.”

Manav also feels if a character is well written then half the job is done and an actor’s responsibility is to portray that on screen with the right amount of emotions. “The Buddy Project is youth-centric and Junglee is close to me.”

Some drama, little suspense

In Yeh Rishta Kya Kahlata Hai, Siddharth will be upset with Antara over her change of behaviour and will suspect something amiss between Naitik and her. He wonders if he should tell Akshara about their past. The guests arrive for Naksh’s birthday. Akshara and Naitik are very happy to see Naksh getting ready to cut his first birthday cake. And this week marks the 1000th epsiode of YRKKH and everyone in the family is celebrating Naksh’s birthday and wishing him with the best in his future. A very beautiful moment for both Akshara and Naitik.

Tantrum queen?

Pratyusha Banerjee The buzz is that Pratyusha Banerjee aka Anandi of Colors’ Balika Vadhu is giving the production house some trouble. Apparently she has been throwing tantrums on the sets. Sources say she comes late and shoots as per her mood. But Pratyusha refutes these rumours.

Aadesh’s chocolaty avatar

Aadesh Chaudhary aka the rowdy Digu in Laagi Tujh Se Lagan is looking for some romance and the actor is back as a chocolate boy in Mein Lakshmi Tere Aagan Ki. Post Laagi..., he wanted something equally good and refreshing. He is back after six months on small screen, but with equal zeal. There were moments where Aadesh felt low, but the actor didn’t compromise.

In Laagi… he had a different and unkempt look, but it is different story in Mein… “My look is different from Digu and this show is about a love triangle. I have to look like a chocolate boy. I am quite excited about my new look,” Aadesh concludes.

The year ahead
Madan Gupta Spatu

If your birthday is October 10...

A home improvement project turns out better than you ever dreamt. Now that you’ve seen the beautiful results, you’ll want to spend more time at your place. Throw a party for your friends, family and neighbours. Entertaining is a natural extension of your nurturing personality. If you’re looking for a place to live, you’ll find a fantastic spot in an unusual neighbourhood.

It’s difficult to make changes in your life right now, but it’s not a matter of life or death. If someone close is digging in and refusing to accept what you’re proposing, use your charm. Be a self-starter at the beginning of 2013. Take advantage of stars to put forward your requests. Hesitation could make you miss a magnificent occasion. It would be such a shame for someone like you. Those teaching or pursuing scientific research will be able to apply themselves well and obtain excellent results.

The opposition that you face is very strong and organised. Sometimes different viewpoints can spice things up, but right now contrary opinions will only breed destructive disharmony. You must first get everyone to agree with each other if you want the team to succeed.

Co-operation may not be the best, but you can find what little you get best in Libra, Gemini and Taurus people. This year may be the ‘best ‘ for you to discuss issues for good outcomes. Use it wisely. Travelling as a group may require you to spend extra.

Things will not be smooth for some of you. You may have a spell of uncertainty; but be clear about your aims and aspirations because you are required to make plans concerning your future course of action. In short, you are likely to experience a mixed bag of results.

Those of you suffering from general weakness and headaches will find some relief. Seniors in the family might complain of pain in the abdominal region, which should be investigated. Someone you didn’t click with before cycles back for another look and the timing is right this time. Compatible signs: Sagittarius, Taurus. Lucky colours: Violet, Salmon. Lucky days: Monday and Tuesday. Lucky numbers: 3, 12, 19, 20, 23.

You share your birthday with Rekha (Bhanurekha Ganesan October 10, 1954), who was noted for her versatility. Rekha was particularly recognised for playing female-oriented characters, which earned her the Filmfare Best Actress Award. Her portrayal of a classical courtesan in Umrao Jaan won her the National Film Award for Best Actress and was followed by numerous critically acclaimed performances. Rekha has acted in over 180 films in a career that has spanned 40 years.
