Cultural programmes mark beginning of autumn fair
Mussoorie, September 27 The fair is being organised by the local artistes without any support of the administration. No official from the Municipal Council accompanied the artistes in their endeavour. For tourists, it was an occasion to click pictures of the folk artistes dressed in the traditional attire. The folk artistes also displayed a song and dance programme along the President of the autumn fair committee Pradeep Bhandari said the first autumn festival was started way back in 1952 by the Mussoorie Municipal Council but over the years, due to the allegation of corruption and mismanagement, the festival had to be stalled. He said the fair, which is being organised by the Parvitya Bigul Sanstha and local artistes, was an effort to revive the old tradition. Spokesperson of the committee Anil Godiyal said the fair would continue on for a month and conclude on October 28. He also said the fair was different in comparison to previous ones as the emphasis was on the folk content and not the glittering razzmatazz involved with it that often led to obscenity in the past. He further stated that the auditions for the inter-school song and dance contests would begin from September 28. The committee will also celebrate World Elderly Day on October 1. Gandhi Jayanti will be celebrated on October 2 and tributes will be paid to the martyrs of the state agitation at Shaheed Sthal. Wildlife Day will be observed on October 6 and on October 8, a symposium will be held to mark Air Force Day. The committee will also observe World Postal Day on October 8. From October 16, various sports and cultural programmes will be organised in the town on regular basis. Dasehra will be celebrated on October 24. |
Photo exhibition on World Tourism Day
Dehradun, September 27 Managing Director (MD), GMVN, Dr Pankaj Kumar Pandey, renowned mountaineer Harsh Vanti Bisht and environment expert SN Mishra were also present. Bisht showed a slide show on the degradation of environment in the Gangotri National Park. She also showed the pictures of this region taken by her and her group two years ago and photographs of the same places taken in the 19th century by a traveller thus drawing a comparison to establish the receding pattern of forest cover and glaciers. She said, "Tourism sustainability will not be possible if we exploit our nature and environment out of greed. We should take from nature only as much as we require with a holistic approach." Mishra expounded the significance of medicinal plants saying that he was planning to grow hundreds of such plants in Uttarkashi. His call to grow such plants in the tourist rest houses of GMVN was accepted by the MD. He said, "Such medicinal gardens in the rest houses will attract tourists. Since most of the people are suffering from different kinds of ailments, so they will be keen to know more about such plants. This will spread awareness about the stupendous benefits of these plants which people have usually forgotten." GMVN account officer Satpal Gandhi, who contributed to giving splendid photographs for the exhibition, also presented his photo collection of last Nanda Raj Jat Yatra, urging spectators to be mentally and physically prepared for the yatra next year. While talking about the sustainability of tourism, the MD said the capacity of the area must be taken into consideration before being exploited. He also harped on using renewable sources of energy for tourism. He said the state had everything from scenic hills, meadows, streams to vibrant culture to woo the tourists.
Mussoorie forgotten
Mussoorie, September 27 The department earlier organised several functions where the tourists were given a warm welcome accompanied with several gifts to mark the occasion. But this year no officer from the department cared to even visit the town, much to the disgust of the residents of the town. The ornamental lights that used to be lit to mark World Tourism Day were also not visible this year, and most of the tourists remained unaware of the day here. The Tourism Department also failed to organise painting and writing competitions to create awareness among the students from various schools. No staff member was seen near the tourist office to distribute the pamphlets of various tourist destinations around the town provided by the Tourism Department. When contacted He also said that World Tourism Day was being celebrated in other districts as usual. |

Dehradun, September 27 In the evening the Tibetans gathered at the Tibetan market, from where they marched up to Gandhi Park carrying candles and raising slogans against the Chinese government. The members of Tibetan Welfare Association said that those who had been left behind continue to raise the banner of revolt against the Chinese occupation despite suppression by them. —TNS |
Bhuvanyaa, Jahnavi bring laurels to SJA
Dehradun, September 27 St Joseph’s Academy was represented by Bhuvanyaa Vijay and Jahnavi Shrivastava. The team won the coveted shield. Bhuvanyaa Vijay was declared the best speaker and Jahnavi Shrivastava was declared the third best speaker. In the national finals (round 3) of the competition (category-1 for classes 11 and 12) St Joseph’s Academy emerged the winners. Amid extremely tough competition from seven other schools like La Martiniere for Boys’ (Kolkata), Bishop’s School (Pune), Swaraj International Public School (Kanpur) and other reputed schools from Cochin, Dhanbad etc, SJA put up tremendous arguments. The topic for the debate was ‘Should we change the straightjacket of syllabi and subject choice for a more joyful classroom experience?’ SJA is the first school to win the prestigious debate competition for the second consecutive time. Bhuvanyaa is the only speaker to be adjudged the best twice in a row. She was awarded a cash prize of Rs. 5,000 and a gold medal. Jahnavi was awarded Rs 2,000 and a bronze medal. In 2011-2012, St Joseph’s Academy has won all major inter-school English debates held in Dehradun and Mussoorie. Bhuvanyaa’s outstanding performance has been appreciated by all. |

first goal in the 25th minute followed by Vikas, who scored second and third goal in the 44th and 49th minutes of the match. |

Dehradun, September 27 Doon Valley Public School beat Col Brown 2-0. Harish scored both the goals. With today’s victory, Doon Valley Public School has ensured a place for itself in the semi-finals. In the second match, Army School Clement Town defeated North Point Children Academy 2-0. Kedar and Aman scored the goal for Army School. As of tomorrow’s matches, Kendriya Vidyalaya FRI will clash with Army School Clement Town whereas KV Beerpur will take on KV IMA. |

URM flays govt on domicile, reservations, poor governance
Dehradun, September 27 Thapliyal said: "The Congress government is dividing people of the state on the lines of plains and hills by playing politics on the decision of the High Court on state domicile. It is the people from plains who have to move court each time to get documents pertaining to state domicile. Similarly, the indecisiveness of the state government over reservations in promotions is going to only snowball into a controversy and rock the state." He said it was unfortunate that the successive Congress and BJP governments had not been able to sort out the issue about the capital. Hen also pulled up the state government for poor governance, saying that it failed to devise and implement effective policies on education and health, the issues of prime importance in the state. |

Dehradun, September 27 He said the officials must contact Sector and Zonal Magistrates for any difficulty, instead of taking help of local gram pradhan. He also made it clear that those on election duty would not be allowed to get away from it. Those having medical problems would require to consult a medical board constituted at Doon Hospital for the purpose. Polling will take place at 1100 booths. He said the total responsibility for ensuring all the arrangements for polling was on ROs' shoulders. their operations to ROs and polling officers. |
