Unique rally by JCB machine owners in Haridwar
Haridwar, September 24 Owners of dozens of these lifting-pulling-removing-crawling vehicles took out a rally in protest from Roshanabad towards BHEL road. Seeing these vehicles in large numbers for the first time, onlookers gathered on both sides with many asking what was the cause of such a demonstration. To put forth their demand, these crane owners had formed a union named Haridwar Crane Owners' Welfare Association (HCOWA). Informing TNS, association secretary Nikhil Rathi said that of late officials had been handing challans to them for venturing in nearby SIDCUL roads. He complained that this was being done to pressurise them to pay officials hefty sums, which was demanded from many crane owners, which they declined. Pointing out that for the past 8 years since the formation of the industrial estate by SIDCUL, they had been operating their machines, paying due registration and other taxes. “We are being unnecessarily harassed. Otherwise, how can we work in SIDCUL only and not ply on adjacent roads? Our vehicles are tyre-based; so no harm is done to the public roads. Instead, many a time we are called by various government departments to carry out public works, which we willingly do,” said Rathi. The Crane Owners' Association has also threatened to gherao the ARTO office on the 26th of this month if the Transport Department did stop harassing them. The crane owners threatened to leave their cranes there as a mark of protest. On contacting an official at the ARTO office said that complaints of commercial usage of these machines, which were licensed for industrial area only, had come to light, as a result of which their prohibition had been made outside SIDCUL region. He also cited the chain system used in JCB machines, which destroy the normal roads as another reason for their prohibition. Sabir Ali of HCOWA said that all the machines of their union were tyre-based. They did not damage the roads. He called on ARTO officials for checking their machines. |
DMC sanitation workers on dharna in Doon
Dehradun, September 24 Secretary of the association Vivek Saxena said they had gone to urge the MNA for reimbursement of pending salaries of the past four months to four women employees of the DMC, who also happened to be dependents of the deceased employees of the corporation. He said the MNA talked to them in anger, saying that no one would get salaries. He also tore down the letter sanctioned in the regard and put it in his pocket. The letter incidentally, too, was signed by him in the past. According to Saxena, the MNA took lightly the warning of the peeved employees to go on strike against non-payment of salaries and his impolite behaviour. The workers were unhappy over the way a sanctioned letter was torn away from the file and said the employees henceforth should not be held responsible if any important letter went missing from the files. The members occupied the space before the MNA's office and said they would not let him enter into his office unless he expressed regret over his offensive behaviour, and sought an apology from him in public. Mayor Vinod Chamoli kept himself away from the controversy, saying that the workers, despite their protest, were working as usual. The stalemate could not end as the MNA did not come to office
today. He also did not answer the phone call made to him by The Tribune to get his side of the story.

Special traffic awareness drive for women in Haridwar
Haridwar, September 24 However, during the awareness drive for a week no women driver will be challaned. They will be apprised about the traffic rules and their violation by them. The women drivers will be given pamphlets and leaflets depicting traffic rules and the number of accidents that took place in the past few years due to non-wearing of helmets, jumping of red light and over speeding. Talking to The Tribune about the drive, Circle Officer, Traffic Police, JR Joshi said as there were only a few traffic policewomen in Haridwar traffic policemen found it difficult to penalise women offenders. “Hence we have decided to carry out an awareness drive only for women, especially young girls, to educate them about the traffic rules and the penalty payable for violating these,” he said. “These days, young girls are driving vehicles more than they used to in the past. But they are violating traffic rules more often mainly by driving without a helmet, more than one riding pillion and jumping red light. We hope to create awareness among them about traffic rules and we are getting success in our drive,” said Joshi while monitoring traffic at the Chandra Charya intersection. The traffic police is getting a good response to the drive, particularly from parents. It is trying to ensure that parents persuade their children to wear helmets and undergo proper driving training. The SP, City, said the people should cooperate with the police in the implementation of traffic rules as they were meant for their safety. Meena Saini, a student who was found jumping red light and was also not wearing a helmet, got ruffled when stopped by traffic policemen, but later realised her mistake and promised to follow the traffic rules. Dr Kiran Sharma, principal of Shiv Dale Public School, appreciated the drive and said the imposition of penalty should be the last resort. There was a need to convince the youth about following the traffic rules. |

A budget of Rs 1.05 crore has been passed at the board meeting for the purpose and sent to the state government for approval. The tenure of the present DMC Board is ending in the next six months.
