SHO suspended on graft charge

Till a few days ago, he was a hero of the Police Department, for bravely countering carjackers and recovering stolen vehicles. Barely a fortnight after his exemplary work in the line of duty, station house officer (SHO) of Khamano Varinderjit Singh has been suspended for seeking a bribe of Rs 55,000 from a person for releasing his stolen vehicle.

Case registered against 200 jobless teachers

Festive season: Route plan to Ghumar Mandi changed

A view of the busy Ghumar Mandi area on Monday evening. In the wake of festival season, the traffic police has changed the route plan of Ghumar Mandi. Earlier, the entry to Ghumar Mandi was from Rani Jhansi Road and National Road, but from tomorrow onwards, the entry to Ghumar Mandi would be from Prof Mohan Singh Chowk, better know as Aarti Chowk.

Husband also succumbs to injuries

A day after the death of Manisha Gupta, a resident of the Bharat Nagar Chowk area, who died in a road accident at Kishangarh, near Khanna, her husband Sanjiv, too, succumbed to injuries here today.

Harassed, disabled commits suicide

A 65-year-old physically challenged man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan in the Salem Tabri area here today. He was allegedly harassed by a financier.

Corporation apathetic to stray dog menace

More than 15,000 stray dogs are posing a big threat for the residents as the local Municipal Corporation has failed to launch any sterilisation drive. The breeding of dogs is continuing in the city unchecked. After the doggy-lane project, the Municipal Corporation has not started any effective drive for the sterilisation of stray dogs.

Bittu got money from US, Europe
Ludhiana, September 24
Radical Sikh leader Daljit Singh Bittu, who is in police custody, had received money from his sympathisers based in Europe and the US. The startling fact came to light during after his interrogation. Bittu, who had been associated with several terrorists during the days of militancy, was recently taken in police custody following inputs from intelligence agencies.

1 tests positive for swine flu
Ludhiana, September 24
Another patient of suspected swine flu has tested positive. The patient, who is from Ludhiana, has been admitted to the DMCH here. "We will continue to receive the cases of swine flu off and on. But there is no cause for worry," said Dr Deepak Bhatia, State Nodal Officer for Swine Flu. "However, we have to keep a watch on the situation," he added. Meanwhile, no fresh case of dengue was reported in the city today. — TNS

Fire breaks out at factory
Mandi Ahmedgarh, Sept 24
Cotton worth Rs 2 lakh was destroyed in a fire that broke at a factory situated on the Dehliz road today. Vinod Kumar, owner of Naina Industries, said the cause of the fire was electric sparks in a godown of the factory. It took more than two hours for the fire brigade of Shryans Industries Limited to control the fire.

A snake was spotted at a multi-specialty hospital here today. Panic soon sprad among the patients in the hospital. It was learnt that when a patient went to a washroom he spotted a snake of about 2.5 feet long. He was shocked and informed the employees of the hospital.

SHO sent to Police Lines

SHO Machhiwara was transferred to Police Line when a person, who was taken to police station, escaped. The person was later arrested. The incident took place yesterday morning when Dilawardin, a resident of Manewal, who was arrested by Machhiwara police with 500 gm opium, escaped from police lock up.

Police clueless about rice theft in warehouse

The Sadar police has initiated a probe into an incident in which more than 15 persons had allegedly looted over 389 bags of rice after tying watchman of a warehouse, situated near Ranwan village on the Ludhiana-Khanna road near here on Sunday.
