Fresh hopes for Pak boy wishing to return home
Faridkot, September 21 Kasif strayed into the Indian territory two years ago and was nabbed by the BSF in Ferozepur district. The Indian government raised the matter with Pakistan for his repatriation and now, the Pakistan authorities have informed the emigration authorities in Amritsar that the boy's credentials would be verified by them. For the verification, Kasif, would be taken to the Wagah border in Amritsar on September 28, where the emigration officials from both the countries and nominated advocates would sit together for the confirmation of the documents and the boy's identity, said Ravi Bhagat, Deputy Commissioner, Faridkot. "We are hopeful of the boy returning home in the coming days," said the DC. Kasif is repenting his decision to leave home after a petty argument with his step-mother. The Juvenile Justice Board acquitted him of the charges of crossing the border illegally but due to the procedural bottlenecks in repatriation, Kasif kept languishing at the juvenile home in Faridkot. Suffering from homesickness as he is away from his parents for the first time, Kasif even received counselling by the psychiatrists, said the DC. The name of Kasif's father is Mohammad Jafar and he is a resident of Pira Hyat, Khand Mandi, in district Okara of the Punjab province in Pakistan. |

Bid to execute illegal land deal foiled in Fazilka
Fazilka, September 21 As per the revenue records, the panchayat of village Penchawali located on the outskirts of the town, continued to be the owner of prime commercial land measuring about 14 kanal 15 marla in a thickly populated area of the city adjoining the judicial complex, sub-jail and Basti Hazoor Singh locality even though the land has been a part of the area under the municipal limits for several decades. The land mafia, in connivance with the village panchayat and officials of the Block Development and Pachayat Department, tried to exchange this piece of commercial land, estimated to be worth Rs 10 crores, with just 27 kanal of agricultural land in village Penchanwali, valued at around Rs one crore only. The panchayat of village Penchanwali, under the presidentship of sarpanch Kanta Rani, adopted a resolution on September 7 this year, offering the 14 kanal 15 marla of land to a private person, Falak Sher, who in turn would have provided 27 kanal of agricultural land in the village. The plea for the exchange as mentioned in the resolution is based on the frivolous ground that the panchayat would earn Rs 1.25 lakh per month as rent in exchange of the 27 kanal of agricultural land. The resolution was promptly sent to the BDPO office for approval. The office of the BDPO, while reportedly approving the resolution, forwarded it for the sanction of the District Development and Panchayat Officer (DDPO). The effort raised eyebrows on the functioning of the panchayat department and the panchayat of village Penchanwali. "After the scam came to light, the district administration took a suo motu notice and rejected the resolution," said Fazilka ADC Charandev Singh Maan. Deputy Commissioner Dr Basant Garg immediately ordered a probe by ADC Maan and the report will be submitted in a month. It is stated that as per the law, government land can not be exchanged for private land under any circumstances. An inquiry has been initiated and the entire record has been sealed. “The BDPO, sarpanch of village Penchawali, Kanta Rani, panchayat secretary, panchayat officer and the proposed buyer Falak Sher, have been summoned to appear before me on September 26 to present their viewpoint,” said ADC
Maan. |

Road blocked for appointment of teachers at Fazilka school
Fazilka, September 21 Over 90 students of the school, along with their parents, blocked the highway for an hour. The protesters lifted their dharna only after an assurance by Fazilka ADC Charandev Singh Maan and District Education Officer Sandeep Dhuria. Sarpanch Lal Singh and Bakhshish Singh, whose nephew has been studying in the school, said the education department has appointed a woman teacher and an education volunteer in the school against the two sanctioned posts. The woman teacher, who was in the family way, went on maternity leave sometime back. Hence, only one temporary employee education volunteer was left to handle 92 students. "We had brought the matter to the notice of the higher authorities of the Education Department many a time but to no avail. So, we were left with no other alternative but to resort to agitation," said the sarpanch. As the news of the dharna reached the district authorities, District Education Officer Sandeep Dhuria rushed to the spot. He deputed one centre head teacher, Satnam Singh, in the school. After persuasion by the DEO that more teachers would be appointed in the future, the students and their parents lifted the

Pungrain inspector booked for siphoning off wheat bags
Muktsar, September 21 Giving details over the phone this evening, CIA in-charge, Om Parkash said, “Acting on a tip-off, a raid was conducted at a rice mill located near Bariwala and the government wheat stock was found stored there.” “After investigating the matter, it was found that 400 bags of wheat were short at a godown located on Marar road. The inspector responsible for maintaining the record, Gurbhej Singh, had not even made any entry in this regard,” added Om Parkash. He said the inspector had sold off the wheat to a flour mill owner Narinder Kumar, who had a partnership with a rice mill owner Amit Kumar, where the siphoned stock was found stored. A case under sections 406, 409 and 120-B of the IPC has been registered against the accused at the Bariwala police station. However, the accused were still at large. When contacted, District Food and Supplies Controller (DFSC) Kaushal Rao Singla feigned ignorance, saying, “I am not aware as I have come to Chandigarh in connection with a case at the Punjab and Haryana High Court.” It may be mentioned here that this is not the first incident of its kind reported in the district this year. Earlier, on June 23, the district police had booked four officials of the Food Corporation of India (FCI) for allegedly siphoning off 6,713 bags of wheat from the FCI’s buffer godown on Lambi road in
