Enraged traders argue with DSP Gurmeet Singh after BJP workers allegedly slapped a businessman while enforcing the bandh.

Bathinda, September 20
Following the call for Bharat Bandh given by the NDA to protest against the hike in the price of diesel and FDI in retail sector, the city witnessed almost a complete bandh today. However, a violent incident was reported at Kikar Bazaar, where the BJP activists accompanying the Senior Deputy Mayor Tarsem Goyal allegedly slapped a trader, forcing him to shut his shop this afternoon, which provoked the traders to lodge a protest against the ruling SAD-BJP combine.

Immediately after the trader, Goldy, the owner of Gupta Sons, was "slapped" by the BJP activists, a number of businessmen of Kikar Bazaar and Dhobi Bazaar gathered on the road and took out a march towards the Kotwali police station. They demanded action against the BJP workers, including Tarsem Goyal. They first gheraoed the police station and later blocked the road leading to the police station for a few minutes.

However, seeing no positive response from the police, they decided to block the GT Road and marched towards Dhobi Bazaar. Meantime, local MLA and Chief Parliamentary Secretary Sarup Chand Singla met the protesters at Dhobi Bazaar.

He assured the enraged traders that action would be taken. With folded hands, he even appealed to the traders to relent. "I assure you that no one will be spared. If any BJP leader has slapped a trader, he would have to pay the price for it," said Singla.

After his assurance, the traders dispersed. Meanwhile, Senior Deputy Mayor Tarsem Goyal reportedly apologized for the act by some BJP supporters.

Talking over the phone in the evening, the trader, Goldy, said, "Tarsem Goyal has apologised for the fault of his supporters. So, we did not file any formal complaint against him with the police."

Meanwhile, all roads wore a deserted look. The bus stand and the railway station also wore a deserted look. Most of the shops, business establishments and some schools remained closed for the day.

Later, in the evening, some shopkeepers opened their establishments. Interestingly, the liquor shops remained open and no one even objected to it.

Youthful enthusiasm

When the traders of Kikar Bazaar were lodging protest, some youngsters accompanying them were seen making the most of it. "We'll upload the pictures of protest on social networking sites to invite comments from friends,” they said.

Singla assures action

"The bandh proved to be successful. All the traders kept their shops shut throughout the day. I thank all those who supported the bandh call given by the SAD-BJP alliance. If someone has taken the law into his hand during the bandh, legal action would be taken against him," said Bathinda (Urban) MLA Sarup Chand Singla.

Cong flays bandh call

"At a time when the SAD-BJP government in Punjab is increasing taxes, they have no right to force others to observe a shutdown on price hike. Moreover, the bandh caused inconvenience to the commoners. It brought out the real face of the SAD-BJP leaders, who slapped a trader forcing him to shut his business establishment," said former Congress MLA from Bathinda, Harminder Singh Jassi.

Congress leader Chiranji Lal Garg has also condemned the incident today in which a trader was allegedly beaten up by BJP workers in Kikar Bazaar while enforcing the bandh.

Guv to open 50-bed hospital at ghudda
Seven docs from the Civil Hospital at Bathinda, two from Rampura and one from Sangat have been transferred to the new facility

Tribune News Service

Bathinda, September 20
Punjab Governor Shivraj Patil will inaugurate the 50-bed hospital at Ghudda village on September 22.
Ghudda, a village, has got a sub-divisional level hospital for which doctors have been pulled out of government hospitals at Bathinda and Rampura Phul.

Sources in the district health department stated that no requirement had been sent for opening a medical facility in the area, as a government hospital at nearby Sangat was sufficient. Health experts said the Sangat hospital would be left redundant with the new hospital at Ghudda.

Health department officials said this has been done keeping in view the future health requirements of the area.

With the government aiming at developing Ghudda as sports and education hubs, the hospital is meant to cater to the health requirements of the people working and living in these institutes as well as villages nearby.

Ghudda has government sports school, NCC's Remount and Veterinary (R&V) unit, Panjab University's college and upcoming campus of the Central University of Punjab (CUP).

A new building has been constructed for the hospital but instead of making new recruitments, staff has been squeezed out of government hospitals at Bathinda and Rampura and dermatologist has been deputed from the Sangat hospital.

Seven doctors from the Civil Hospital at Bathinda, two from Rampura and one from Sangat have been transferred to Ghudda.

The doctors who have been transferred from the Bathinda hospital include deputy medical commissioner Dr Vinod, specialist in medicine Dr KK Goyal, paediatrician Dr Anjali (leaving behind only one pediatrician at the women and child hospital), surgeon Dr Usha Goyal (leaving behind only one surgeon who is soon to be promoted as SMO), orthopaedist Dr Dheeraj, Dr Arun Bansal and gynaecologist Dr Monika Gupta.

Similarly, eye specialist and anaesthetist from Rampura hospital have been transferred and dermatologist from Sangat has been transferred to Ghudda. All the doctors were transferred on Monday.

The Punjab Health System Corporation (PHSC) has constructed the hospital building on two acres. The construction began in January 2011 and was completed around a month ago.

Canteen, joyrides at Rose Garden lose out to malls
Megha Mann
Tribune News Service

Bathinda, September 20
The joyless joy rides at the Children Park and a 34-year-old canteen at the oldest recreation centre in the city, the Rose Garden, have lost their battle for survival to the malls in the city and the administrative neglect.

Registering low business, the condition of the canteen is pitiable. The three-year contract for canteen will end in the next seven months and the present contractor does not seem to be in a mood to continue.

The canteen was given on a contract for Rs 5.81 lakh for three years, but the contractor's workers swear by not taking the work again.

“Who will come to this shabby canteen where there is no adequate place to sit and relax. In the days of mall culture and luxury, customers prefer AC rooms that are well-designed and maintained," said one of the workers.

The canteen was constructed in 1978 and seems to have received little repairs and restoration. Customers have already dumped the hall meant for sitting indoors and opt for the chairs and tables outside the canteen. The canteen building has wide cracks and trees growing out of it.

"We tried to spruce up the place by laying a tiled floor in the front portion but that too failed to do any wonder," said an employee at the canteen.

The garden also does not have enough public conveniences such as toilets. The set of toilets near open air theatre was abandoned a long time ago.

Even the Children's Park stands in an urgent need of overhaul. The joy rides and the park's boundary railings have got rusted. "The rides here are much cheaper than any kind of entertainment available for children at malls. A little maintenance can do wonders," said the employees of joy ride section.

Meanwhile, the commissioner of the Municipal Corporation, Bathinda, Uma Shankar Gupta, said few months ago, tenders were floated for renovation of the Rose Garden but none responded to it.

"We now plan to invite an expression of interest (EoI) for giving the canteen and joy ride section on build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis," he said, adding that the plan also includes opening shops selling products for children.

Fact file

  • A small park adjoining the canteen has a droopy cane gate and fencing in the name of beautification.
  • Interestingly, the entire area was scrubbed clean ahead of the mayors’ visit to the Rose Garden. The mayors from across the country were in the city recently to attend a meeting of the All India Council of Mayors.
  • The entire cemented area in front of the canteen was washed and the cane gate was given support and straightened. Even the two food shops situated near the entrance wore an exceptionally clean look, which otherwise, had wrappers strewn around.
