Dual Nationality
Pak SC disqualifies Malik, 11 others

Pakistan's Supreme Court on Thursday disqualified Interior Minister Rehman Malik along with 11 other lawmakers for violating the Constitution by holding dual nationality, saying Malik cannot be considered "sagacious" and "righteous" as he had submitted a "false declaration" in 2008.

A three-judge Bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry issued the order in response to a petition filed by Mehmood Akhtar Naqvi, who had asked the apex court to disqualify all federal and provincial lawmakers having dual nationality.

It is the second time in three months that the court has ruled against 60-year-old Malik.

The court ordered initiation of criminal proceedings against Malik and other disqualified members on the charge of perjury for making false statements and concealing facts. It further directed that the remuneration and perks they received as parliamentarians or ministers be recovered from them and called for progress report in this regard within 10 days.

The Bench ruled that lawmakers holding dual nationalities were not eligible to hold any public offices under the Constitution. The Election Commission promptly acted on the court order later in the afternoon and issued notices to the lawmakers.

Among the 12 disqualified lawmakers is Farahnaz Isphani, a close aide of President Asif Ali Zardari and the wife of former envoy to the US, Husain Haqqani. Other disqualified lawmakers include Zahid Iqbal, Muhammad Ikhlaq, Ashraf Chauhan, Nadia Gabol, Amina Buttar, Jameel Awan, Waseem Qadir, Farhat Mahmood Khan, Nadeem Khadim and Ahmed Ali Shah. Ruling that Malik was a British citizen until May 29, 2012, the verdict stated that he was not transparent with respect to his statements.

“Rehman Malik, in view of the false declaration filed by him at the time of contesting the election to the Senate held in the year 2008 cannot be considered sagacious, righteous (and) honest,” the Chief Justice said.

Monica Lewinsky to publish secret love letters to Clinton

New York, September 20
Monica Lewinsky is set to write a tell-all book about her torrid affair with Bill Clinton, including her intimate love letters to the US ex-President.

Lewinsky, Clinton's favourite White House intern, wants "revenge" on the ex-President, who she believes escaped unscathed while she was never able to shake the disgrace of their Oval Office trysts, The 'New York Post' reported.

Lewinsky is ready to air bombshell details from her affair with the former President in a $12 million memoir, according to her friends.

Lewinsky never got explicit in past interviews about her relationship with Clinton, but now plans to describe his "insatiable desire for threesome", a friend of Lewinsky told the National Enquirer.

According to her friends, 39-year-old Lewinsky will also recount how Clinton referred to his wife Hillary as a "cold fish" and "laughed" about their "non-existent sex life". She'll also release love letters she wrote to Clinton, the paper quoted one of her friends as telling the Enquirer.

"In them, she opened her heart about her love for Bill and how much happier she could make him," said a source. — PTI

Film fury: Protesters storm diplomatic enclave in Islamabad, army called in
Afzal Khan in Islamabad

Pakistan on Thursday deployed the army in the sensitive diplomatic enclave here after a protest over an anti-Islam film turned violent, leaving 86 persons injured, including 36 policemen, as angry demonstrators tried to breach the high-security area to reach the US Embassy.

Members of student groups, including the Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba, began gathering outside the Red Zone in the heart of Islamabad, which includes the US Embassy, Indian High Commission and missions of other countries as also sensitive government buildings, at around 2 pm in large numbers to protest against the anti-Islam film 'Innocence of Muslims'.

The crowds swelled about two hours later as thousands of members of hardline religious groups, including the Ahl-e-Sunnat Wal Jamaat and the Jamaat-ud-Dawah, came to Islamabad from Rawalpindi in a rally.

The Indian High Commission is located less than a kilometre from the gate of the diplomatic enclave. All Indians in the diplomatic area are safe and they are inside the country's mission, sources said.

The protesters fought running battles with the riot police for almost three hours. They pelted stones at the police, who used tear gas, rubber bullets and batons while trying to disperse them.

At least 36 policemen and 50 protesters were injured.

After the police failed to bring the situation under control, the Interior Ministry called in the army to quell the protest.

The unrest lasted for five hours and came to an end after sunset. The army has taken over the security of the diplomatic area. More protests are expected to take place on Friday. About 25 protesters were arrested for trying to breach security barriers and scaling the walls of the diplomatic enclave.

A witness said only about 100 persons demonstrated, while security forces kept tight control. The satirical French weekly Charlie Hebdo featured caricatures of naked Prophet in what the publishers said was an attempt to poke fun at the furore over an anti-Islam film. — Reuters
