A team of officials from the Municipal Corporation Bathinda (MCB) successfully removed encroachments from street number 2 in Gopal Nagar from where it had returned empty-handed on Tuesday.

A police team comprising 50 men and 20 women constables swooped down on the site of the encroachment at 11 am today along with the MC officials. While DSP Gurmeet Singh led the police team, assistant municipal commissioner Kamal Kant Goyal headed the corporation team.

On Tuesday too, the MCB officials and the police force had tried to remove the encroachment but the accused had brought the Guru Granth Sahib from the nearby Gurudwara and started "path" (sermons) at his house. The MCB officials withdrew to avoid any tension over religious matters but came fully prepared today.

With the help of a priest from the nearby gurudwara, the swaroop of Guru Granth Sahib was respectfully taken away and the illegal structure was knocked down. When the demolition drive started, cops took two women from the house in custody. Anticipating problem from these two, police took them in custody as a preventive measure.

A JCB machine and around 20 workers were deployed to knock down the walls of the room that had blocked the passage in the street.

The family concerned was informed half an hour before the drive was to begin and was directed to collect its belongings. The team members included DSP (City) Gurmeet Singh, SHO Jaspal, XEN Tirath Ram, SDOs from the municipal corporation and others.

Earlier, around three years ago too, MCB officials had removed this encroachment but the encroacher reverted to their old ways soon and again constructed a room on the encroached land.

A woman had allegedly encroached upon a portion of the road in street number 2 of Gopal Nagar leading to its closure. Nearly 32 families from the area had been trying hard to get these encroachments removed, but in vain. People claimed to have approached the municipal corporation as well but no action was taken.

Peeved over the closure of the passage in the street, these 32 families moved the High Court against the municipal corporation holding it responsible for the problems they were facing.

Acting on the orders of the High Court, a team of the officials from the municipal corporation under the assistant municipal commissioner was directed to remove the encroachment.

Bathinda, September 19
Rampant violation of traffic rules in the city has made zebra crossings virtually inaccessible for pedestrians.

Vehicles stopping on the zebra crossings when traffic lights turn red are a common sight causing problems for pedestrians in crossing the road.

A number of pedestrians complained that the zebra crossings made to facilitate them have failed to serve any purpose, just because of traffic cops turning a blind eye towards the traffic rules violation. They even blamed the motorists who do not bother to stop their vehicles a few metres behind the zebra crossings.

Most of the zebra crossings in the city have already faded. Even the ones which are visible are seldom adhered to. The motorists continue to violate the traffic rules in this politically-active city.

A senior citizen, Gurveer Singh, while pointing at a zebra crossing on the Goniana road that leads to the local bus stand, said, "It is not easy to cross the Bathinda-Goniana road these days. The motorists hardly care about the traffic rules and drive their vehicles in a zig zag manner. They even stop their vehicles on the zebra crossings and beyond. Such violations put lives of pedestrians at risk. Senior citizens are among the worst hit."

Another pedestrian, Geeta Goyal, said, "Once I was crossing the road near Hanuman Chowk while the traffic lights were red. Suddenly, a motorcyclist came and had almost hit me. Instead of saying sorry, he shouted at me that I was wrong."

When contacted, ASP (Traffic) Kuldeep Singh said the department was soon going to launch a drive to make people aware about the traffic rules.
