A movement in art
Visual art is no longer confined to the walls of an art gallery. Cafes and restaurants are displaying works of artists with élan
Vasudha Gupta

There was a time when art lovers would run around arranging passes for MF Husain’s exhibition at Jehangir Art Gallery. Fast forward to today’s times; most invites in the inbox come from artists displaying their work at cafes and popular restaurants. So, why is more art selling at eating joints rather than galleries and conventional art exhibitions? Is it because we tend to spend more time in a restaurant rather than an art exhibition or just because it is displayed better?

Neepa Sharma, the woman behind Artscapes.

For someone who appreciates art, it is all about trying to promote the canvas. “Everything that I have done till date has been out-of-the-box,” shares Neepa Sharma, one of the well-known names in the art circle of Chandigarh. She says, “Anything new is fodder for the audience. The city, which has started waking up to art, is certainly responding well to the concept. Art sells when the client spends more time appreciating the work. In a café, the surroundings are relaxed and one tends to appreciate art more than in a gallery,” she says.

On the contrary, the true artists have a rather different opinion. Says Tirthankar Bhattacharya, chairman and professor of art history from the Department of Art History and Visual Art Voices, Panjab University, “There are two views on this. Mostly, hotels are commercial hubs and artists also just want their work to be displayed at those places.” He, however, feels that showcasing work in a place where masses flock to eat, drink and make merry can never do justice to the work of an artist.

“If you have a classical dance performance or a classical music recital in a cafe, it surely will never give the deserving respect to the artist. It needs to be demarcated if one is looking for an art bazaar or is a truly art connoisseur,” Tirthankar adds.

And owners have their own point of view on the matter. “Art goes well with food,” says Neha Singh, owner of the Girl In The Cafe, Sector 17, Chandigarh. Her cafe showcases works from different artists on a regular basis. Displaying works free of cost, she is glad that they are picked up by buyers. “Art just pairs really well with food,” she adds.

For a few others, the problem being faced in art galleries can range from basic infrastructure to even attracting the target audience. Rozy Varinder Kaur, who recently brought together 20 artists from the region to Chandigarh for an exhibition, is planning her next in a club.

“It’s a very simple formula. Cafes and restaurants are hubs of the rich people. A person who won’t mind spending on food in a luxury eating-joint will never mind buying an expensive piece of art,” she says. Planning to showcase six major artists in her next exhibition, she has had to face problems with electricity and the out-dated lists of guests in the past. “For us, media is the only way to attract a gathering, but the lists are hardly updated by the galleries,” she adds. Convinced that a cafe or a hotel will have a better back-up for infrastructure, she is in no mood to approach a gallery in the near future.

Rana Gurtej, a photographer, who recently displayed his works at Books and Brew Cafe, Chandigarh, is keeping the cost factor in mind. For a fresh talent like him, it is about trying to build on the name through places frequented by friends and family. “For now, my prices are not so important. I just want to showcase my work,” he says.

For artists, it is also the visibility factor. When Prabhdip Brar, assistant professor at the University Institute of Fashion Technology and an artist, displayed her 13 works at Flamme Bois in 2010, it was about catering to an up-market audience. “My motive was to bring-in people from the non-art circle,” she says. Her exhibition got a good response and made her among one of the firsts to move out of a gallery and into a plush bistro.

No matter where the works are displayed, a true art lover will always find a place to pick up colours close to his heart!

Back to the roots
After Yaar Anmulle, Harish Verma is all ready with his next flick Buraah!
Jasmine Singh

This usually happens with a multi-starrer film—either you fall in love with the entire star cast (read Golmaal) or you come with a good memory of one particular character that had you completely floored (Farhan Akhtar in Zindagi Na Mileygi Dobaara). Harish Verma is that one name which stayed with the audiences when they watched the multi-starrer Yaar Anmulle. Jatt Tinka, his character was the most loved, and Harish got the whiff of this adulation pretty early.

“Yaar Anmulle had three actors playing their respective leads, Aarya Babbar, Yuvraj Hans and me. Everyone did a fabulous job, but I guess people liked my light-hearted, yet serious character,” who is in Chandigarh for the post-production of his next release Buraah!

Harish plays a funny character again. Stereotype? The word doesn’t exist in his dictionary. For someone who has played umpteen characters in theatre productions with Gursharan Singh, experimenting and improvising on roles for him is all part of acting. “I owe whatever I have learnt till date to theatre. Working with Gursharan ji was an experience of a lifetime. Theatre taught me to juggle with many characters,” adds Harish who would love to do different kinds of roles in future.

“The audiences liked me in the light role in Yaar Anmulle, but I could also see them crying when my character got a bit serious,” says Harish who played both negative and positive role in his debut film Punjaban.

“I put in my best in the role I get. I was nominated for the best actor critic role for Yaar Anmulle. Punjabi cinema has got better with time, and good roles are being written. So, an actor like me has a choice to make.” Harish who bagged a good role in Naa Aana Is Des Laddo when he moved to Mumbai some years back, wants to concentrate on films now. “I am getting offers for TV, but I want to dedicate my time to Punjabi films as of now. I am open to Hindi films as well,” adds the actor who believes in being sincere to work, carrying the right attitude and giving the best to his acting.

Tabla maestro Fazal Qureshi believes music has a universal language that transcends boundaries
Mona

Fazal Qureshi carries the best of the two worlds — the rich tradition of Punjab Gharana and the western sensibilities he imbibed through his association with band Mynta.

Classical music is constantly evolving. Whosoever becomes part of it, leaves his or her distinct impression on it...

In Chandigarh, for an event organised by the Pracheen Kala Kendra in collaboration with the Department of Cultural Affairs, Chandigarh Administration on Sunday, Fazal, tabla virtuoso, talked about influences in his life…

Experimenting is what he believes in, provided it’s done in the right way. And his association with Sweden-based band Mynta has led to fruitful innings. Fazal shares, “Music has a universal language. Playing tabla in Sweden where people have rarely seen one and exposing our country to western music is a mutual learning experience.” His latest album Connecting Three World brings together tabla, sarangi, oud and saxophone. “It has a distinct Indian, middle-eastern and European touch,” says Fazal with three decades of experience in music.

In the era of Bollywood music, Fazal is sure of the fact that classical arts will continue to do well in future. “Classical music is constantly evolving. Whosoever becomes part of it, leaves his or her distinct impression. Not for nothing, it has not only survived but flourished in the last 2,000 years,” says this follower of Punjab Gharana. Fazal finds hope in the number of six-year-olds and many more that show up at the foundation in Mumbai, which goes by the name of his father Ustad Alla Rakha Khan, the finest tabla player of the century. “If only we are able to tap the young talent, we are good,” he says.

Experimenting is one characteristic that Fazal has picked up from his famous father, being media shy is another. “I do talk whenever I feel the need. Like when it’s in relation to my father’s foundation or a new album release. Apart from that I would rather like to make my work speak,” he says.

Humble he is despite the position he commands and attributes his most memorable moments in his distinguished journey to the performances he did with his father and brother Zakir Hussain. “Our performances together have been the most remarkable ones. They have been the best learning experiences for me. Because of their busy schedule, it has been hard getting hold of them to learn. Shows together have been the best way to learn,” he says.

Complementing each other...

Esha Deol Bollywood actress Esha Deol doesn't want her businessman husband, Bharat Takhtani to turn to acting. "I had always said that I never wanted to marry a hero. He is a successful businessman and I hope he continues to be one. There is no need for him to become an actor," she said after the couple walked the ramp together for jewellery brand 'Azva' at the India Bridal Fashion Week 2012.

The actress has walked the ramp before but this was the first time she walked it after their wedding. Calling Bharat "a born model", she said that she didn't have to give him any tips on how to walk the ramp. "I didn't give him any tips, he is a born model. He has done many ramp shows when he was in college. He is very confident," she said.

Azva's collection was based on the seven vows of an Indian wedding and thus the couple seemed apt for the show. "The collection is unique and creative. It is a mix of traditional and modern jewellery. Even modern couples can wear these and tie the knot. It also a very emotional collection as it is based on the seven vows," Esha added.

The line had an exquisite range of 22-karat gold jewellery. It included necklaces, earrings and bangles.

The actress looked stunning in a pink and blue lehenga with heavy gold work. She wore a heavy neckpiece and beautiful long earrings. Bharat looked handsome in an off-white sherwani with gold work. For Bharat, seeing Esha as a bride for the second time was stunning.

"She grows on me every single day. This is like a deja vu experience for me. She looks very beautiful," he said. The couple tied the knot June 29 this year. —IANS

Patch-up time?
Robert Pattinson forgives Kristen Stewart and says what she did was stupid

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart have become an item again, just months after he walked out on her for cheating on him with married director Rupert Sanders, it has been revealed. The 26-year-old actor is said to have had a heart-to-heart conversation with the tearful Hollywood beauty and forgiven her “stupid mistake”.

According to a source, the Twilight hunk had set up home with the brunette once more.

“They pretty much decided they couldn’t live without each other,” a publication quoted the source as saying. “Kristen poured her heart out to Robert and told him it was a one-off and a mistake,” the source said.

The betrayed actor quit their Hollywood home in June after snaps of his girlfriend cheating on him with her Snowhite and the Huntsman director surfaced. He went to stay at Reese Witherspoon’s California ranch, where Stewart’s dad John begged him to patch things up with his daughter. Just days ago, Kristen jetted back to join him at the ranch. “Rob sees it as Kristen made a really stupid mistake. After a lot of long tearful talks, they’ve worked it out,” the source said. “Rob can see how truly sorry Kristen is and has totally forgiven her. They really do love each other,” the source added.

The Hollywood A-list couple have now moved into a secluded pad in the same Los Angeles compound where Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have a place and are due to appear on the red carpet together in November for the final Twilight’ film ‘Breaking Dawn - Part 2. —ANI

Family over career

Hollywood superstar Brad Pitt says he does not want to direct movies any more because he has more fun spending time with his kids. The 48-year-old actor, who has six children with long time partner Angelina Jolie, had previously said that he wanted to be a director when he turns 50, reported a publication. "It's too much effort. It's too big a job. I'd rather be a dad. It's more fun. Being a father has changed everything for me as far as perspective and interests go. I just want to take care of myself and be around them," he said.

When Pitt is turning his back on movie-making, his daughter Vivienne is taking to the spotlight. Last month it was said that the four-year-old was making her film debut in Disney's Maleficent. She will reportedly play Jolie's on-screen daughter in the film.— PTI

Musical evening

Rani Mukerji Recently, Rani Mukerji donned a gorgeous pink sari and was spotted at the launch of Dreamum Wakepum, her first song from the film Aiyyaa. Actor Prithviraj was seen shaking a leg with Rani, and the duo was extremely excited about their song.

The song launch happened amidst Matunga street. Music and dhol were played and dancers were dressed in traditional attire.

Apart from Rani and Prithviraj, other famous B’ town personalities spotted were Director Sachin Khundalkar, choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant  (who has choreographer the song) music composer Amit Trivedi and Amitabh Bhattacharya.

Support system

Actress Kristen Stewart, who is going through tough times, is finding solace in her Twilight co-star Taylor Lautner's "unconditional love". Lautner has been giving support to Stewart after her affair with Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders, and subsequent break -up with actor Robert Pattinson, reported a publication.

He is ready to give his assistance to her during promotion of Twilight: Breaking Dawn - Part 2.

"Kristen is still extremely fragile. She is not sure who she can trust so she is leaning on just a few of her closest friends. One of those friends is Taylor Lautner. He has been by her side every step of the way, offering his support and unconditional love," a source said.

"They have always been really close friends. Kristen knows he has her back behind-the-scenes and will be there for her during all the Breaking Dawn: Part 2 publicity tours," the source added.

However, Lautner doesn't want to take sides, and is also in touch with Pattinson.

"It's not like Taylor is taking sides. He also really cares about Rob Pattinson, but he knows Rob is already getting tons of support plus he has always been better friends with Kristen. They have a very special bond," the source said. — PTI

Asymmetrical cuts, rich fabrics and plenty of bling—tops get a jazzy makeover this season
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

The summer season draws to a close and the pleasant weather has started to take its hold. But like everything else to do with fashion, 2012 autumn/winter trends will be influenced by the past. So, along with some fresh designs we have some carry-over trends in tops.

Peplum is a craze for this season. It was way back in 1947 Dior brought about this fashion statement that shone the spotlight on a woman's waist.

It's once more in fashion. Structured yet feminine, peplums have come back onto runways but they have evolved and merged with today's trend to make it into a wearable attire.

"Waist is the centre of attention this season, so right from belts to bows, a lot of attention is being given to the waistline. Then be it with strings or ribbons, the designers are playing with the silhouettes to get the attention on the waist," says Vipin Saini from Gorma designs in Sector 19. He adds, "The neck is also sharing the limelight. This season, it is all about cowl necks, boat neck and bell sleeves. But unlike last year this season is about comfort than style."

"Hanky fit in tunics is what I showcased at the Delhi Couture Week and is going to be quite a rage this fall," says designer Amit Kashyap from Enliven's Deiva. He adds, "Cape is another hot trend for the coming season. It comes in different styles-short from the front and long from the back or long at the right side and short at the left. Basically asymmetrical cuts work for women who are heavy on hips as it hides the flab in a stylish way. Kurtis with nice embroidery is also going to be seen in the fall. And since heavy jewellery is back in vogue, so attention is again on the waist line."

Oversized tops too are also a trend. So look out for baggy sleeves and asymmetrical lines. "For a modern look, tunics are going to be in and they will be teamed with cropped pants or leggings. Tops that look like a miniature frock will also be in. And so will be kurtis with gotta patti, zari and hand embroidery," says Vipin. That's not all. Knee-length shirts are quite an eye-catcher this season and so are the kaftans.

Designers have got rid of their penchant for minimalism. So, we see lavish details, heavy ornamentation, embroidery on clothes this season. "Nothing is plain. There has to be some element of bling in clothes. Embroidery is going to be quite a rage so, tops, kurtis and tunics will feature embellishments like crystals, gem- encrusted silks, glossy brocades, beads and baroque embroidery," says Babi Grewal from Babi's.

Fabrics are rich this season, like velvet, silk, brocade and soft leather. Georgette is also being teamed with knits for a chic look. We have tops that have a georgette front and knitted back. So, be ready for a trendy cut this season.

Par Excellence
The chip
Jesse Grewal

Jesse Grewal The chip is a low running shot played from around the green. The ball is airborne for a short distance and rolls most the rest of the distance towards the hole. The technique of the shot is a much debated topic with the professionals and low handicap golfers playing it in a different way to that of the high handicappers.

High handicappers play this shot much like a putt with no wrist action. They treat a chip like a putt with a lofted club. While this technique may give reasonable results from a good lie it does not work from thick fringes or bad lies.

The basic difference between a chip and a pitch is the angle of approach of the club to the ball on the downswing. If the club catches the ball first and then the ground we call the angle of approach as steep which is the desired path in a chip shot. If the club bottoms out just before the ball and catches the ball on the upswing, it is a shallow angle of approach which is the desired path in a pitch shot or a lob shot.

The chip shot is normally played from a bad lie and a pitch can only be played from a good lie.

The dynamic or effective loft of the club at impact is dependent on the angle of approach. The effective loft is the actual loft minus angle of approach. If the club is a 56 degree wedge and the angle of approach is at a 5 degree descending incline the effective loft would be 56 - 5 = 51 degrees.

On the other hand if we had a 56 degree wedge and a 2 degree rising or upward path we would have an effective loft of 58 degrees. This is why we see the tour players play low shots with high lofted wedges as they hit the ball with a steep or descending angle which helps them produce more spin. High handicappers on the other hand use 7 irons which force them to play the shot on the upswing to get the ball up which is impossible from bad lies. Even if they manage to get a decent contact the ball comes off with too little backspin and they are unable to control the distance of its roll.

To create a steep angle of approach we have to get the club up on a steep angle on the backswing and then bring it down on the same path. More on the execution of this shot in the next week’s article.

Govardhan Gabbi A trained engineer, running an advertising agency Govardhan Gabbi takes solace in writing. Out with his fourth book Bharamjaal Govardhan says, “Life is but an illusion.”

His stories are Illusive and twelve in total. Bharamjaal is about a married woman who is unable to conceive, falls into a relationship with her workmate. Child follows, and so does a complex web of relationships. If you think this woman is modern, well, there is another one who balances out her husband’s straying from marital life by having an affair herself. But not all women in Govardhan’s life are rebels. “There is one woman protagonist who rather adjusts to the injustice,” says Govardhan, who writes on social structures and man-woman relationship. Caste system is the theme in stories Ajgar and Gunjhaldaar.

An ardent reader of Shiv Kumar Batalvi and Sadat Hassan Manto, this writer also takes inspiration from his mother who weaves stories about the trifles of daily life and his father who can tell the biggest story in a line. His stories have been labelled obscene, but that doesn’t bother him, “I believe in writing it out, for sometimes it’s important to bring things out of the closet.”

Choosing the right foundation is essential for good makeup. But choosing from the flurry of foundations available in the market can be baffling. Here we talk about various types of foundations.

Powder foundations

Powder foundations are popular with women who want to wear bare minimum makeup or do not usually apply makeup. Its fast and fuss-free application (easier to apply than even liquid foundation) also makes it a top choice for makeup. Being more absorbing than liquid, it's a good option for oily skin, especially in the summer. Powder foundations are available in loose powder as well as pressed powder form. Loose powder foundations can be worn alone or used to 'fix' the foundation and keep the makeup in place by adding a finishing touch. All you need to do is dip the applicator brush in the powder, tap to remove the excess, and gently buff on the face. Pressed powder foundations or compacts are available in numerous shades and these too can be used to touch up foundation. They are applied by a dry or a damp sponge and suit women with normal, oily and dry skin types. Though, they are best for those with an oily skin. You may feel powder doesn't give as natural a look as liquid. But a high quality, hard pressed one won't disappoint.

Cream foundations

Cream foundations contain oil and are available in stick, compact as well as in tube form. Having a thick, creamy texture, they provide maximum coverage and are more hydrating for the skin than any other foundation. They also add shine to the face that lasts for long. Cream foundations can also be used as concealers. The thick texture can cover skin flaws like blemishes and scars, leaving the skin smooth. The compact form of this foundation is often recommended by dermatologists for acne and rosacea. Cream foundations are suitable for women with normal and dry skin. Those with oily skin should stay away from this foundation.

Mousse foundations

Mousse foundations offer the smooth coverage of liquid, with the lightweight finish of powder. They are good for medium coverage, with their light texture making them easy to blend. Mousse foundations are usually available in matte effect and suit all skin types, but are best for dry or ageing skin.

Cake or stick foundations

Cake or stick foundations, as the names suggest, are available in solid forms. They dry quickly, providing a matte finish to the skin. Cake or stick foundations can be used as concealers as they mask the skin's flaws and blemishes. These are used often for photo shoots and stage performances as they are quite heavy for everyday usage. These are not suitable for women with dry and normal skin as it may leave your skin looking dry and blotchy. They work best on oily skin as they dry up soon giving uniform coverage.

Waterproof foundations

Available in liquid and cream forms, waterproof foundations will come to your rescue in hot and humid seasons. While other foundations come off easily and quickly as one tends to sweat more, these stay put. Water-resistant and easy to apply, they are great for all skin types and leave you looking fresh. If you've got oily skin, look for oil free liquid ones, and if you've got dry skin, go for a cream one.

Jazz it up
Manpriya Singh

Rhythmic beat, Frank Sinatra, Silent Moment—yes that’s Jazz for you! It’s quite difficult to define music beyond the good, the bad or the noisy. Any technical description doesn’t count the liveliness, spirit and excitement that the genre has come to be associated with. At best described as, a beat with a dynamic changing rhythm. Right from its obscure origins in New Orleans over a century ago to the world over phenomenon that it has become, this week, we give you a round up on ‘all that Jazz’.

Hall of Fame

The genre is the most significant form of musical expression in American culture. The pianist Duke Ellington and trumpet player Louis Armstrong need to be mentioned in the same breath. As much for the former’s contribution in making Jazz a classical art form as for the latter’s major role in creation of modern Jazz. The list of notable Jazz artistes is like arriving at a list of good Bollywood songs, it’s exhaustive and infinite. There’s Art Blakey, the famous American drummer, who forever changed the way drums were played, the world over and Thelonious Monk, who helped popularise Jazz and bring it to an altogether new level. They may not feature on the billboard, but they figure in the history of genre. Frank Sinatra stands a class apart. As much for being a good Jazz singer, as for popularising the genre. His She Shot Me Down is still considered a classic version of smooth Jazz. Architect of the Silent Moment by Scott Colley, Mystery and Meaning by Dave Douglas remain among the most played Jazz albums.

Youngster’s take

Someone one said, Jazz is the only music in which the same note can be played night after night but differently each time. Though that’s not what makes the genre all pervasive. “I like almost all the compositions by Classical Jazz Quartet. The way they reinterpret the genre and produce it,” shares Sharan Sibal or S2, from a Chandigarh-based rap crew. He adds, “I’m not a voracious listener of Jazz but one of the strongest points of Jazz is that is not restricted to one musical instrument.” Piano, trumpet, drums, bass, trombone, saxophone, nearly all the instruments have been used in the compositions at one point of time or the other. It can be fast and it can be slow or swinging. Then they set a benchmark, once a mistake, if it’s twice, it is an arrangement, if it has more than three chords, it is Jazz.
