DC bans digging of wells
Fatehgarh Sahib. Sept 17 The orders would remain in force till November 16. The Deputy Commissioner has issued the orders to avoid the unfortunate incidents in which people have lost their lives while digging. Keeping in view, the increase in number of accidents and deaths due to drowning in the canal and to prevent any untoward incident by the anti-social elements, the Deputy Commissioner has banned the movement of vehicles on the banks of Bhakra canal in the district. Similarly, the Deputy Commissioner Yashveer Mahajan has also directed the cyber café owners not to allow any one to use cyber café services without proper ID proof and registering their names. He has also directed the owners to save activity server log at main server for six month. He warned that if anyone found violating the orders would be punished as per law. |
Fraud cases: Three-day police remand for Neena Sharma
Mohali, September 17 At least 39 cases of cheating on the pretext of sending people abroad have been registered against the accused. The police has recovered 13 passports of various clients, around 112 grams of gold jewellery, 315 grams of silver, four driving licences and six ATM cards from Neena’s possession. All driving licences were made from Patiala. According to the police, Sharma has been absconding for past few months and was also declared as a proclaimed offender (PO) in one case registered against her at the Mataur police station by Devinder Kaur in May 2011. She was also declared as the PO in two other cases. Neena, a daughter of a retired police official, was arrested from Panchkula yesterday where she was putting up in a rented accommodation for the past one month. The accused (36) said she had been changing houses after registration of cases against her. “But I did not leave the area, as I have to meet my counsel regularly and to sign many documents with her,” claimed Neena Sharma. Terming her a habitual cheater, Mohali SSP GS Bhullar said she had also sold a plot of her maternal uncle fraudulently. She had started the immigration business five years before and also run a restaurant in Phase VII. She had cheated about 20 persons, said Bhullar. Neena Sharma had been married about 10 years ago to Mangat Ram Sharma and has two children. She has been deserted by her husband and both her children live with him. Her husband is also wanted by the Chandigarh Police in cheating cases. “I did not want to dupe anybody, but it was my staff who had committed the fraud. I am ready to return the money to all complainants,” claimed Neena Sharma. |

Student held for dragging cop on car
Chandigarh, September 17 The accused is a student of Chitkara College of Engineering. At 7 pm, Head Constable Gulab Singh, who was on traffic duty, issued the student a challan slip and asked him for his documents. The student went inside his Hyundai Verna car and stepped on the gas. As the Head Constable tried to stop him, he was dragged on to the bonnet for some distance before the car finally came to a halt. The police arrested the student in a case of obstructing public servant from performing his duty. — TNS |

2 students killed in road accident
Mohali, September 17 The deceased, identified as Pranchal (22), a student of PG diploma (first year) at GGDSD College, and Prashant (21), a BTech student of Lovely University, were going from Kharar to Morinda on their Pulsar motorcycle when they had a head-on collision with the bus of Delhi Public School near Manak Kheri village at around 7 am. Both died on the spot, said sources, adding that it was raining when the incident occurred. Meanwhile, driver of the bus fled from the spot after the accident. The deceased were residents of
Shimla. The police handed bodies of the deceased to their relatives after a postmortem at the Civil Hospital in
Kharar. A case has been registered against the driver. |

ONGC beat Baroda to earn bonus point
Chandigarh, September 17 The first match to be held at the cricket stadium of Sector 16 between State Bank of Patiala and HPCA was called off and the teams were awarded 2 points each. The match between State Bank of Hyderabad and All-India FCI also could not be held and both the teams received 2 points each. In the third match, played at the DAV-Sector 8, the ONGC team beat Baroda Cricket Association and secured 5 points, including a bonus, while Baroda got (-1). After winning the toss, ONGC opted to field. Medium pacer Parveen Kumar, who grabbed three wickets to reduce Baroda to 31 for 6 in 10.1 overs, proved that the decision to field first was correct. He took the wickets of Dhiren Mistry (2), Sourav Wakaskar (1) and Jai Kishan (1). Baroda's innings were steadied by Yagnesh (34 off 37) and Swapnil (25 off 30) for the 7th wicket, and ended at 95 for 8 in 20 overs. Parveen Kumar grabbed 3 for 18 while Sorab and Lukinder claimed two wickets each. In reply, Sandeep Sharma (34) and Tanmay (35) added 58 runs for the second wicket before Tanmay was caught and bowled by Lukman (35 off 30, two boundaries, three sixes). Thereafter Deepak Joon and Hiten put on 92 runs for the fourth wicket before Deepak was caught by Imtiaz off Rawal for 42 off 38.His innings included two boundaries and two sixes. For the bowling side, Kuldeep Rawal claimed 4 wickets for 29 runs. In reply, the CAG team was in a spot of bother when they lost their first 5 wickets for 83 runs on the board in 12.4 overs. ISB to organise IPL-style tournament
Chandigarh, September 17 The tourney will witness cricket, badminton, table tennis, pool, football, squash and volleyball matches and will be organise on the lines of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Hyderabad campus has four franchisees while the Mohali campus has three (owned, managed and staffed by the students of the Indian School of Business). The franchisees are won in an auction where students, staff, spouses, faculty and alumni will bid for teams. Each player would then be sold in a live auction. The winners of the competition will be awarded with the 60 per cent of the prize money accrued from the bids while the runners-up will get 35 per cent of the total prize money. |
CFA to hold football trials on Sept 20
Chandigarh, September 17 The players born on or after January 1, 1996, can participate in the trials and should bring a certificate to prove their age to the venue. The selected players will undergo a coaching camp before the final selection of the team. Chandigarh, September 17 The tournament will be organised from October 4 to 6. Players born on or after January 1,1999, (for under 14 category) and on or after January 1,1995, (for under 18 cateory) can participate in the trails. SGGSC-26 outplay RSD-Ferozepur to lift PU inter-college kabaddi trophy
Chandigarh, September 17 The team of Government College, Muktsar, overcame Post Graduate Government College, Sector 46, by 51-26, to bag the third spot. Khalsa College-Garhiwala win B-Division title Boys of Khalsa College, Garhdiwala, emerged as the overall champions of the Inter-College Kabaddi Championship for Men (B-Division) held at the PU gymnasium hall today. The team routed PU Constituent College, Nihalsinghwala, by a margin of 48-22. In the match for the third spot, MGKMSSPE College, Jhakroudi, outpalyed Sri Ram College, Dalla, by 62-59. |
