In Chandigarh for a fashion show, fashion designer Wendell Rodricks uses the opportunity to launch his book once again
Vasudha Gupta

The moment one sits across Wendell Rodricks, the perfect definition of an oxymoron shines through the glitz and the glamour. One of the most prominent names in the fashion industry lives in the rustic town of Colvale, Goa. Just as he enters, his enigma follows right behind him. Clutching his muse, Evelyn Sharma, he creates a sort of a flurry among the shutterbugs. Apart from the flash of colours on Evelyn, the humble purple shoes declare that Wendell is as effervescent as the industry he is in. In Chandigarh, as a part of the Blenders Pride Fashion Tour, the ace designer senses a great opportunity and once again launches his book- The Green Room.

"Many designers are celebrating their establishment in the industry," he says. Instead of sticking to a conventional nostalgic trip, he sprinkles it with a dash of difference. "I was just trying to cut a clear picture of my life, the fashion industry and my family," the designer says. Unabashedly cinematic, the book is free from malice. But it has a few dark secrets about women who once had enough arm candy. They then quit the industry and now have children. "I just cannot do harm to the fraternity," he says. Belonging to the Goa's Writers Group, the designer will soon be leaving for another creative adventure. Securing a full bright scholarship, Wendell will teach American design students. "We Indians are born with the genes to cut fabrics," he says. Cutting On Squares, his next literary venture will be an interesting international perspective on the cutting formula.

Celebrities are mostly very issue friendly. From donating eyes, to saving the tiger, issues are picked up every day. In wake of the burning controversy involving illegal coal mining, Wendell recently shut his boutique in protest. "We just need to examine our conscience. I have several miner friends. The problem lies when it gets illegal," he says. A member of the Fashion Design Council of India, Wendell does not just sit back on the topics which bother him. "I am totally against the fact that the government does not recognise the fashion industry. We pay so many taxes but still we are not being treated right," he says. He has taken the responsibility to initiate a dialogue to get results. It becomes integral to understand the future of the Indian fashion industry from a designer who knows the right pulse of fashion. He witnesses the problem in excessive expectations from the industry. "We are very fresh in the international fashion scene. People need to get real," he says. Unlike contemporaries of his taste, who look at fashion weeks as a platform to showcase talent and creativity, here is an unconventional thought. "The numbers represent a money making cabaret," he adds. The designer is unhappy with the fact that Men's fashion Week was given a miss this time. "We have so many menswear brand, no one took the initiative to sponsor the event," he says, visibly upset.

An amalgamation of fashion and splash, his collection Fash Splash brings bright oranges, yellows and red. The name spells beach and resort glamour that moves effortlessly on the red carpet. Wendell keeps the silhouettes stylish and western with a hint of fusion, as always!

Evelyn Sharma The road ahead…

Born to a German mother and a Punjabi father, the tall lass is still grappling with Hindi. Evelyn Sharma’s recent film, To Sydney With Love may not have raked the box office, but she is upbeat about her upcoming ventures. She has Ishaq opposite Parteek Babbar and Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani opposite Ranbir Kapoor and Nautanki Saala opposite Ayushmann Khurrana. "I wrap several boys around my finger and Ranbir is one of them," she quips. Following the conventional route, the lady took up an acting course and polished her Hindi before she stepped in the industry. Let's see what this leggy beauty has in store.

STEPPING STONES: Evelyn Sharma

Creativity unveiledMandira Wirk

In most instances, the designers really don't even need a model to walk in their clothes. Her alluring personality elevates as Mandira Wirk walks in with her model. One look at her model donning a gown, we get a clear insight into her collection. "It is very fairytale and dreamlike," she says. Veils Unveiled is inspired from an English bride. Pure, romantic, simple and elegant, her collection uses a lot of apricots, peaches, aquas and lilacs. High in technique on layering, ruffles and lazer cutting, the lady uses rhinestones, silks, satins and organza's to make your English bride dream come true. Moving away from the leading fashion weeks in India, the designer is looking for more freedom and opportunity to create something different.

Reality takes the lead
Huma Qureshi, the new find of Bollywood talks about the success of GOW and how the film industry has changed
Ashima Batish

Huma Qureshi
Destination B-Town: Huma Qureshi

Two inches taller than the actor cast opposite her, Huma Qureshi was then surprisingly asked to climb on to two inches of heels. The effect was Nawazuddin Siddiqui looked even shorter and the height difference between the two became apparent.

Not that the director of their film, Anurag Kashyap couldn't have done in Gangs of Wasseypur (GOW) what directors of Hindi films have been up to till date —making the heroes of Bollywood 'look down' at heroines — but he chose to keep it as unconventional as possible. "In fact that made our pairing in the film unique and chemistry sizzling in the film. Why is height the criteria to fall in love? The content of cinema is more important than sticking to the age-old practices," comes from the new find of Bollywood, Huma Qureshi, who was the show stopper for Raghavendra Rathore in Chandigarh on Saturday.

Huma is enjoying her success thoroughly, as a result of which she walked the ramp in the last season of Lakme Fashion Week. But taking a few steps on the ramp, she says, is more terrifying than facing the camera. "I have experience of doing theatre that comes to my rescue when I act but giving company to fit and towering models, it's always a challenge. I get jitters in those high heels."

Coming back to her priority, sensible cinema, she isn't taking fame for granted and is consciously choosing scripts. No wonder, next on the cards is a very different film, Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana. "I want to do larger-than-life cinema as well but reality is always stranger than fiction and is more appealing."

She says that it’s the new breed of directors who have made all the difference. “They are very experimental, they are the ones taking risks by choosing concepts that are fresh and revolutionary at the same time.” Mindful of how Bollywood has treated its leading ladies in the past, she is happy that the change is finally happening. She admires Vidya Balan and Rani Mukerji for leading the front. “When directors now choose to make a women-oriented film, they don’t portray them as an object of pity and sympathy. Their subjects are the women of today, who aren’t scared of taking big bold steps.” Easy examples of The Dirty Picture, Aiyya and Heroine are used to prove the point.

On the same note, even if GOW was a male actors' film, it gave her and Richa Chadda enough recognition. “What matters is the substance in the role rather than the length." Substance in this case was her rebellious outlook even though she was shown to be small town girl. The aviators that are used by her and Nawazuddin were part of the scheme. "In small towns, a boy can't openly approach a girl; the aviators were an indication of the green signal to the relationship." They were not just added as accessories to the film script. "It again brought a feel of reality to the film, nothing is without logic in Anurag Kashyap's films." Certainly not the aviators!

Designers showcase their creativity at the two-day exhibition, De Cosmolitan Afaire, in Ludhiana
Gurvinder singh

Meenakshi Sharma, a designer at De Cosmolitan Afaire, Ludhiana creates pieces of fashion from old, thrown-away and waste cloth left-overs. Whether these are her rejuvenated painted old aluminium tea-pots or the accessories, she is keen to reinvent. Her handbags are created with colourful zippers. “Not only do these handbags look interesting, but are very functional as well, with multiple pockets,” she says. Another set of handbags is created from disposed off denims. The recycled products piques her interest and she doesn't let any part of the clothing go waste. I find it creative to create interesting stuff from waste material, she says.  Thrown away buttons and ribbons add up beautifully to play an aesthetic role in her designs.

Painting spirituality

Wearing the small pictures of dieties in chains for spiritual reasons might be passe, but Musskan, a young jewellery designer is trying to bring it back, this time as a trend. Using onyx, calsydney, corals, malachities, turk flower in the jewellery, many of her pieces thus have precious and semi-precious stones. A few pieces are also handpainted with pictures of dieties like Lord Krishna, Ganesha, Sai Baba, Durga Ma, Balaji etc. And if you thought these are mostly worn by spiritually-inclined elderly women, Musskan says, “These are rather favoured by girls. These look beautiful, elegant and different from the everyday jewellery,” she says.

In the name of God
Vasudha Gupta

The magic of India lies in its religious aspect. More than how much it attracts those who live here, the kind of attention it gets from the outside world is surprising. On his seventh visit to India, Michael J Wright, along with Lucy Macey, Kerry Macdonald and Caroline Neave have put up a collection of their photographs taken in the last two weeks in India. “I have always been a very spiritual person, so the Vishnu temple at Deogarh was the first place where we started collecting the pictures from,” says Michael.

The exhibition kick-started when an enthusiastic group of 50 artists got together to create portraits of Nek Chand. Lining an entire wall in Rock Garden, they sure attract a lot of attention from the visitors. Also into painting, making sculptures and creating installations, Michael knows it is tough to bring sculptures to Chandigarh. “The best part of putting up the exhibition is that several visitors recognise the places,” he adds. The photographs have been clicked on the journey from Deogarh to Delhi. Needless to say the photographs captured all temples.

Statuesque!
Sukhmani

Gardens today are an extension of your homes. Garden statues have graced gardens for centuries. Statues add a decorative element to the landscape and highlight the architecture of your home.

A cowboy statue in front of a ranch style house, for instance, augments the house's style. Garden statues are a ‘hardscaping’ landscape element that coordinates well with ‘softscaping’ features like flowers and shrubs. They not only enhance the look of your garden but also act as space fillers in a large garden to avoid the garden from looking empty. The choice of the garden statues must be done on basis of certain guidelines—what type of a garden do you wish to create? What is the scale of your garden? What mood or theme do you want to convey? And what materials will best suited for your garden style?

Placements

You can use a garden statue as a focal point to enhance the aesthetics of your garden. Large statues can make a great statement without much supporting landscaping; a well-manicured lawn can make a large statue stand out prominently. Large statues might also be placed in front of a tall garden hedge. A bright white statue in front of a dark green hedge contrasts nicely.
Small to medium-sized statues make ideal accent pieces for flowerbeds and other landscape features. Use staggered or sporadic spacing to create a more natural look. Ivy and other climbing vines can be trained to climb up statues to help them blend with the garden plants.
Statues can also be used to accent or define a garden pathway. Place two statues on either side of the pathway, either at the ends or throughout the length to add an appealing element. If the landscape has a bench or set of decorative chairs, a small statue, such as a sitting gnome can be placed on the edge of the seat.
If you want to establish a peaceful feeling in your garden, try to keep most of the garden art low to the ground and unobtrusive. Then again, if you want your garden to be invigorating and energising, use lots of vertical elements.
Selecting natural colours or colours similar to your plants will create a more restful feeling, while contrasting colours create excitement.
The kind of garden art that you choose can really help tie together the elements of your garden and create the feeling that you want.
Create an Asian-inspired garden with a statue, or several statues that fit the theme. Buddhist temples, Buddha and dragons are some common choices.
You can also place several statues together to create a theme or mood. Group together wild animals, fairies, cherubs or barn animals to create a stone garden that is whimsical and unique.
Lastly do give a thought to the material of the sculptures in relation to the weather conditions. You don’t want to end up with statues that cannot withstand the heat, humidity or those that will crack and split during winters.

Green thumb
Healthy option
Satish Narula

There is a wide range of annual flowers to choose from. But those who want something new are always on the prowl. The innovative gardeners keep adding one or the other feature, plant or amendment in the garden. For this they keep visiting various nurseries or garden stores. But, have you ever explored the possibility of finding something different in medicinal plants?

There is a vast wealth of flora in the wild. In some of the western countries, the craze is now for ‘weed’ flowers.

See the accompanying picture. The name of the plant is cleome. The flowers appear at the terminal head of the plant. As the flowers start fading, the long pods take over; both look like a spider giving the plant another name, the ‘spider’ flower. They are available in pink, white or purple hues. Coming from the wild, needless to say, they grow without any fuss. They grow to a height of about four feet. The spread of the plant is, however, limited to a foot or so. The plants prefer a comparatively dry soil. They can be grown in partial shade too. The propagation is by way of seeds.

Echinacea is another beautiful medicinal plant that grows easily in this region. A sister of rudbechia, it bears deep pink flowers that are cosmos like but with a much bulging central yellowish disc. The leaves are pointed and the plant hardly grows more than 10 to 12 inches. The flower heads appear at the top of the plants. The plant is however, sensitive to cold and the plants die in the winter, only to sprout back at the onset of spring. The plant can also be propagated by way of divisions.

Gloriosa superba is another very attractive flowering plant that can be grown in gardens for its floral beauty. Called Laangli or Kalihari in ayurvedic medicines, it is a weak-stemmed plant that climbs up with the help of tendrils. No doubt, the flower of this plant is superb in look; almost all parts of the plant are poisonous. So one should be very careful while selecting the place for growing this plant. It is the state flower of Tamil Nadu. The bold and beautiful flowers are yellow margined with deep red in the centre.

I know, the names are unusual and may not be known to most of the nurserymen, but these plants are available in this region as I have myself grown these in my garden. Try for yourself and get the seeds. Those who get these have an edge on others.

Summer's last hurrah!
Kandla Nijhowne

Come September, we bid farewell to the summer heat. Salads shall make way for soups. “Chai garam” will be the pick as opposed to chilled “nimbupaani”! While the humidity still nudges us to partake a cooling drink or a tangy salad, how about giving this year's summer its last hurrah with a show stopper salute? An ice-cream pie? This dreamy delight is a combination of biscuits, ice-cream, nuts and chocolate sauce; only these elements are layered together and re- frozen to create a pie effect. At the time of serving, you cut thick wedges of the pie and drizzle them further with lashings of caramel sauce, runny cream or custard. Don't count calories. Count the resulting hurrays instead!

Method

Crush together the cookies and peanuts in a coffee grinder or with a rolling pin.
Set the oven on pre-heat at 350 degrees F (180 C).
Add in melted butter to the crumbed biscuits until combined.
Press ¾ of the mixture into a 9-inch deep-dish or pie-plate, and bake for 10 minutes.
Cool on a wire rack for 30 minutes, and then chill for 30-45 minutes.
Stir the leftover biscuit and butter crumble into the softened ice cream.
Heap into the chilled pie shell. Freeze for half an hour after which you can safely press the choco-chips on to the surface.
Return pie to the freezer for at least six hours.
Let pie sit at room temperature for 15 minutes before slicing and serving.
To make accompanying sauce, heat the broken chocolate bar on low until melted.
Remove from heat and add the coffee decoction.
Slice the pie and top with hot sauce. Enjoy!

Choco-peanut ice cream pie

25 chocolate cookies
¾ cup roasted, salted peanuts
1/4 cup butter, melted
1 lt chocolate ice cream, softened
180 gm bar of chocolate
3-4 tbsp strong brewed coffee
½ cup choco-chips

star track
Dream come true

Katrina Kaif's success in Bollywood has been unprecedented. She is loving her world and her life at the moment. She talks about overcoming challenges and dealing with success.

Success story

I would say that my success has been a mix of hard-work, passion and destiny. I would give 33% to each. I believe I have been lucky and my life has changed drastically. I never thought of becoming a star in India. I worked hard because I am passionate about my work.

Literature and language

Initially Hindi was tough for me and I took time learning it. I speak to my staff members in Hindi and dub my own lines. My accent will always stay, I guess. Even today, I rehearse my long Hindi lines in advance as and when needed. I can move around the country speaking Hindi.

Rumour spree

Earlier, all the talk about my personal life would affect me and I would cry. Now, I have got used to it and I don't read the papers. I know who I am. I know who my friends are so I leave it at that. When I want to talk about my personal life, I will do so.

Katrina KaifWell grounded

I have lived in Mumbai for ten years which is the longest I have stayed in any city. I have work and I have a home so this makes me feel grounded, secure, rooted and safe. I have also been able to provide for my family which makes me feel great. I am so busy and I never thought I would lead such a life.

Cinematic touch

I have more choice now than when I joined and for a few years later on. I can choose my roles and also turn down films. I am looking for meaty and varied roles. People are more receptive to individual and smart films now such as Kahaani.  We can experiment with movies now though the formula will always work. —HRM

No hang ups

Alia Bhatt, daughter of Mahesh Bhatt, is all set to make her Bollywood debut with Karan Johar’s Student Of The Year.

“I deliberately chose not to be introduced by my dad but by someone else. That would have been the easier way out, but I wanted to do it on my own. I am very fortunate to have got a chance to work with Karan in my very first film. It is a dream debut. He is such a down to earth person and went out of the way to take care of us,” she tells.

Talking about her character in the film, Alia shares, “I play a rich stylish girl Shanaya Singhania who is crazy about shoes and clothes. She has her own share of problems back home and is on the lookout for that one guy who will love her unconditionally.”

Ask her to choose between her co- star Siddharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan, she quips, “I am fond of both of them equally. Both are as different as chalk and cheese. If Varun is loud and fun loving, Sid is the sober types.” Since this is a school film, what kind of student was she in real life?

“Average, but good in co-curricular activities (dance, acting and sports). I was never interested in studies hence quit college and moved to acting.”

Alia BhattFurthermore, Alia has no problems enacting bold scenes if the script demands it. “This film has a beach scene so I had to adorn a bikini.”

So what did her father say after seeing the rushes of Student Of The Year ? “He does not want to see it and he will wait for the release date (19 October) and check it out as an audience. Mom (actress and film director Soni Razdan) who was with me during shoots gave a very important piece of advice i.e. “less is more”.

Looking ahead, this 19 year old says, “I will do both light films and the hard hitting ones, a variety which dad excels in as well.”

Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan Hush hush affair

A lot of details about the Saif-Kareena wedding which happens within a month are being kept under wraps. Members of the Pataudi family will not attend the functions because they are either travelling or are boycotting the event for their own reasons. Sharmila Tagore has been very busy and has been asked not to talk about the bridal attire. She is tired of talking to the media and planning everything at the same time.

Sridevi’s on a roll

Sridevi is having the time of her life, or should we say, the time of her laugh in Toronto where she’s attending the Toronto Film Festival with her English Vinglish (EV) director Gauri Shinde.

Apparently, the two ladies are forever giggling because the local media there Sridevi expects Sridevi to fumble with English, just like her character in English Vinglish. Sridevi who speaks the language fairly fluently has a hard time trying to remain in character.

“It’s hilarious, really. Because Sridevi has been asked to remain true to her character. So while in the film she’s struggling to speak English properly, in Toronto she struggles to not speak the language properly,” informs a source.

This apparently has the two new best friends Gauri and Sridevi in splits. Apparently Gauri and Sridevi, spend all their free time in Toronto shopping and sight-seeing. Sridevi is no longer a babe in the woods even when Boney is around. Sridevi’s entire family, that is Boney Kapoor and her two daughters, are in Toronto to give her moral support during the first public screening of her comeback film.

Mutual admiration club

Ranbir Kapoor is lapping up all the well-deserved praise for Barfi! at the moment. He is not shy of praising his former girlfriend Deepika Padukone for her growth as an actress and as a person.

On Cocktail

I am surprised, shocked, and amazed by Deepika's growth as a person and as an actress. I can see the confidence in her, the understanding of cinema, acting, life, etc. Deepika has learnt to surrender to her art which is acting and I absolutely loved Deepika Padukone her performance in Cocktail.

Personality matters

I have always said that Deepika is a beautiful person. She is beautiful on the outside and the inside. She has a good heart. I am glad that we are friends now and we connect with each other in different ways.

Chemistry and all that

People can say what they want but we are working together on a romantic film and we are friends so we are comfortable spending time with each other. The film is our priority at the moment.

In conversation with Sonali Bendre

Sonali Bendre will soon be back on the telly with a brand new show, Hindustan Ke Hunarbaaz. The actress shares her excitement about the show and her film assignments.

Tell us about your new show?

Sonali BendreThe show is produced by Sidharth Basu’s Big Synergy and will air on Life OK. I am excited about the fact that everyone on the show will be a winner.

How come?

The show will feature kids from five to 15 years of age who will showcase their talent. But unlike other reality shows, there won’t be any competition. We won’t have marks or any judging system. We will give prizes to all participants.

Why did you choose this show?

I like the fact that kids get a chance to showcase their talent. And they will be celebrated instead of feeling pressure of competition. As it is kids get much pressure on a daily basis in sports and school. They should also get time to do things they care about

How did you feel being replaced in India’s Got Talent?

I do one show in a year, so I had to make a choice. This show is very interesting. Terence Lewis too will co-judge the show which will air in October.

You have signed a film too?

Yes I have signed Milan Luthria’s Once Upon A Time sequel and will be seen opposite Akshay Kumar. I liked the role but mostly this role is for Shobha aunty and Ekta.  — HRM

If your birthday is September 17...

Financial problems will be a source of tension. Investment in assets should be avoided. Do not let your children take advantage of your generous behaviour. You need to be in your best behaviour because it won't take much to upset your lover. Tempers will mount if you are too pushy at work so try to understand the need of others before you take any decisions. If travelling make sure you carry all-important documents.

There will be sudden new developments at work that could necessitate change in strategy. You will be able to follow your goal despite of it being postponed or revised. An overseas business is also predicted for some. Several opportunists will try to jump on to your bandwagon for personal gains so try to ignore them. In fact, it would be wiser for you to work independently to safeguard your position. Creativity is rampant throughout the world; you aren't the only one who is coming up with some great suggestions. Inventive ideas will be shared, some being put to practical use at a rapidly increasing rate. With new incentives cropping up every day, don't spend too long thinking about how, why or when to put your own ideas into practice.

Extra cash and possible winnings are expected. As an employee, accept the duties which have been given to you; avoid doing things your way as this could irritate a superior. Students may not be very happy with their grades.  You might be unaware of the importance of current events.  You must carefully consider the next step and start taking notes. Money may feel like it is 'running' out of your pocket and need. Cooperation from family members is essential, especially with spouse and parents. Caution while dealing with elder members is advised. There are bright chances for additional finance to flow in. You may encounter chances to earn profits in investments in yellow metal or Gold.

Those suffering from some ailment can hope for a swift recovery before November. You can look for an improvement in mental and physical health on the whole. Overall it is a good year health-wise.
