Students seek increase in college seats
Ferozepur, August 23 However, they landed in jail after being arrested by the police today in a preventive action. In all, 58 students including six girls, were arrested today under sections 107 and 151 of the CrPC while they were staging a dharna outside the district administrative complex. Sukhwinder Singh, zonal secretary, Punjab Students Union (PSU), said the students have been demanding an increase in the number of seats in BA First Year of the college for which they have been knocking at every possible door for the last two months. He said there were more than 1000 students seeking admission to the college but only 300 students were given admission and the rest have been left in the lurch. While condemning the police action, the students said while the state government is claiming to have initiated steps to improve the quality of higher education in Punjab, the ground reality was different. Another student Rakesh Singh said even the infrastructure and the facilities being provided in the college were not up to the mark. On the other hand, college principal Dr Hira Singh expressed his helplessness in the matter. He said the issue has been brought to the notice of the university authorities and the state government and there was nothing he could do about it. When contacted, Dr Kamaljit Singh, coordinator, Panjab University, said it was not possible for the university to enhance the number of seats in the college at this point of time. He added that the state government has not fulfilled its promise of providing matching grants to meet the non-recurring expenses in the light of which, the university cannot do anything as it has no provision of separate funds for this college. Deputy Commissioner S Karuna Raju said he has already informed the Chief Secretary and the registrar of the university about the demands of the students, and added that the students, rather than protesting in front of his office, should approach the university officials. The students have decided to intensify their protest till their demands were met. |

Abohar admn intervenes to oversee MC affairs
Abohar, August 23 SDM Vipul Ujwal today found that scores of hoardings had been allowed by the council without charging the advertisement fee. Notably, the council had not auctioned the collection of advertisement fee that had fetched more than Rs 2 lakh per annum. Scores of hoardings had been fixed in the crossings that record the maximum flow of vehicular traffic besides pedestrians. The Congress councillors had alleged in a memorandum to the Director, Local Bodies, that advertisement tax was being siphoned off by workers of the ruling alliance in connivance with the MC staff. CLP leader Sunil Jakhar hoped this would give some relief to the 1.5 lakh residents of this sub-divisional town. — OC |
