Sewage woes in Abohar
Abohar, August 13 Members of the Durgiana Market Association in Nai Abadi rolled down their shutters in the afternoon. Led by their president Bhim Chachaan, they entered the council complex, forced the entire staff to leave their office rooms, locked the main gate, making the staff hostage inside. The protesters shouted slogans at the main gates and staged a dharna. They regretted that the MC did not pay heed to the directions issued on a petition by the Principal Secretary and Director of the Local Bodies Department and later by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on a petition filed by some councillors to improve the sewerage system. Responding to the calls made by MC Employees Union president Mangat Ram Verma, the city police led by SHO Surinder Pal reached the complex located near Ghantaghar Chowk and got the staff freed by persuading the protesters to open the locks. As the protesters and MC employees had a heated exchange, the police had to intervene to avert a clash. The police persuaded the protesters to disperse. The Municipal Employees Union later resolved to go on an indefinite strike to demand legal action against the protesters. The strike might paralyze all essential services, the union warned. On the other hand, the members of the Durgiana Market Association warned of complete strike if any action is initiated by the administration. In a related development, the city (south) unit of the BJP today recommended the expulsion of three councillors as they had not ended their anti-party activities. The recommendation has been routed through the district president Sita Ram Sharma. The councillors, Ravi Makkar, Kamal Nagpal and Geeta Chaudhary, former president, BJP Mahila Morcha had participated in the stir against the failure of the MC to redress the grievances of the citizens relating to sewage and drinking water. |

Moga MC to issue notices to Nestle, 300 defaulters
Moga, August 13 Confirming this, Executive Officer (EO) of the MC, KS Brar, said the notices were being issued to them under Sections 137 and 138 of the Punjab Municipal Corporation Act, 1976 for tax recovery. The EO said in case of non-payment of the bills within the stipulated period, action would be initiated against the defaulters to attach their moveable and immovable properties as per the existing laws. Brar revealed that the multi-national giant owes an estimated Rs 15 crore to the MC as house/property tax. “We have got a nod from the state government to recover the house tax and accordingly, we are serving a notice under Section- 138 of the MC Act to attach the company’s property,” he added. The Tribune tried to contact Himanshu Manglik, in-charge of public relations department of the Nestle based in Gurgaon, but he did not comment anything on the issue. The Nestle recently filed an application against the recovery of house tax before the additional deputy commissioner who gave a decision in the company’s favour but the local body immediately sprung into action and filed appeal against the ADC’s decision before the principal secretary of the local bodies department who set aside the ADC’s order and asked the MC authorities to recover the tax from the multinational company as per the law. Meanwhile, after the conversion of the local body from council to corporation, a couple of months ago, the authorities had identified 300 other defaulters of the house tax, including government departments, commercial establishments and individuals, against whom notices would be issued soon, the EO added. |
