Faulty audio mars prayers at Baramulla Eidgah
Residents blame Auqaf Committee for fiasco
Tribune News Service

Srinagar, August 21
Eid festivity turned sour for a huge gathering of Muslims, who had assembled to offer special prayers at the Jadeed Eidgah of Baramulla in north Kashmir yesterday, after the sound system installed by the local Auqaf Committee malfunctioned.

Many devotees, who had gathered at the Eidgah, were seen shouting from the sidelines, complaining of not being able to hear the special sermon because of the faulty sound system.

“I was in the last row and could not hear the sermon or other speeches delivered,” lamented Mohammad Shafi, a banker who had gone to the Eidgah grounds to offer prayers.

Most people who had assembled at the Eidgah suggested professional management of the event and resented poor arrangements by the Baramulla Auqaf Committee.

“The Baramulla Auqaf Committee, which is entrusted with the job of managing such events, should have employed professionals to manage the sound system,” said Javed Ahmad, who was also present at the Eidgah offer prayers.

Others resented the absence of prayer mats and other facilities at the Edgah.

“The Auqaf Committee has no dearth of funds. But they are unable to manage an event like Eid, which is celebrated just twice a year,” said Abdul Rashid, a local resident. He urged the Auqaf Committee to construct more exit gates at the Eidgah. “The ground, which can accommodate over 10,000 people, just has one gate. We request the committee to construct another gate to manage the rush of people and prevent a stampede,” said Shafi.

Srinagar, August 21
Separatists in the Valley have condemned the house arrest of Hurriyat leaders on the eve of Eid, terming it interference in religious affairs.

In order to keep a tab on the activities of the separatists, the Jammu and Kashmir authorities had put several senior leaders under house arrest on Eid. Besides, the police also carried out raids across the Valley to nab second-rung Hurriyat leaders and activists.

Those put under house arrest included hardline separatist and Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Geelani; moderate separatist and Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq; Tehreek-e-Hurriyat general secretary Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai; Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chairman Yasin Malik; Democratic Liberation Front chief Shabbir Shah and National Front chairman Nayeem Khan.

Condemning his and other separatist leader’s house arrest on Eid, moderate separatist and Hurriyat Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq termed it fascism on part of the state government.

“It is one of the biggest tragedies to suppress the political rights of Kashmiris. The government is now suppressing the individual by the use of force. This is highly condemnable,” said Mirwaiz via his telephonic address to a gathering at Eidgah. Mirwaiz termed the government’s actions undemocratic and un-Islamic.

Terming enforcement of peace by using force a misconception of government, the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) condemned the house arrest of its chairman Yasin Malik in Srinagar on the eve of Eid.

“By putting the JKLF chairman under house arrest, the Indian authorities have prevented him from offering Eid prayers,” said a JKLF spokesperson.

He said the authorities interfered in religious affairs by preventing Malik to offer the prayers, besides calling the house arrest an infringement of his democratic and political rights to engage in peaceful political activity.

The separatist leaders in the Valley had chosen different venues for offering Eid prayers. While Geelani had announced to offer special Eid prayers at Hazratbal shrine, Mirwaz was scheduled to lead Eid prayers at Eidgah and Yasin Malik was slated to address people at the Tourist Reception grounds in Srinagar.

Janipur residents protest power cuts
Tribune News Service

Jammu, August 21
Residents of Janipur today held a protest against frequent power cuts in the area for the past few weeks and demanded regular power supply. They also alleged discrimination against the area in the matter of release of development funds.

Addressing the protesters, Sunil Dimple, president of the Jammu West Assembly Movement (JWAM), urged the Chief Minister to ensure that the residents got regular electricity.

Dimple said people were having sleepless nights due to unscheduled power cuts and low voltage. He alleged that the PDD had no satisfactory answer to these power cuts, adding that the voltage was so low that even inverters were not getting charged and electrical gadgets had become non-functional.

He warned that the JWAM would call for a bandh in Jammu if the power situation did not improve and regular water supply was not restored. He said the Chief Minister had announced an allocation of Rs 200 crore and additional power for the Jammu region, but nothing was visible on the ground. He alleged that the Chief Minister had misled the public by issuing such hollow announcements.

Dimple alleged that the government had not taken any step to improve the power and water situation. Ministers were enjoying in the Valley while people of the Jammu region were facing huge power cuts, he added.

Dimple said the construction work on a Rs 300-crore flyover was in full swing at Jahangir Chowk, Nati Pora, in the Kashmir valley while in Jammu the project had been delayed, which was ample proof of discrimination against the Jammu region.

“Work on the flyover and multi-storeyed parking lots at Panjterthi, Shalamar and the bus stand has not been started as yet and the coalition government is befooling people of the region,” Dimple alleged.

He demanded that work on the flyovers at Rehari Chungi, Jewel Chowk and Vikram Chowk should be started immediately. He also demanded that traffic lights should be installed in all the spots identified by the government. He demanded that the Metro should be started in the city and circular roads should be constructed to solve the traffic problems being faced by the people.
