Eloping incident: Speaker not related to girl

Chandigarh, August 14
A day after the Chandigarh Police booked a youth, Amit Walia, his family and friends, for kidnapping a girl linked to a politician, Haryana Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kuldeep Sharma today stated that he and his family were not related to the girl who had eloped.

The youth had later married the girl in a temple and the couple is yet to be traced. While the family members of those arrested had alleged that the police registered a case of kidnapping as it was under political pressure. Kuldeep Sharma said that he had no such relative in Chandigarh and had no link with the police case as reported in these columns today. "I have no such relative in Chandigarh and do not know any such girl who might have eloped," he said. — TNS

Gymnastics contest on August 18

The sports forum ‘Chandigarh for Olympics’ will organise the 1st Pt Rishi Parkash Bhardwaj Memorial Invitational Gymnastics Championship at the gymnasium hall of Sports Complex,Sector 7, here.

The championship will be held on August 18 and a one-day competition will be organised in both girls’ and boys’ sub-junior (U-8,U-10,U-12 and U- 14) categories, under the rhythmic and artistic individual events. The interested players can enrol themselves with Anil Kalia, organising secretary, at the competition’s venue between 5pm to 7pm. The players are advised to confirm their entry before August 17. Local lad shines

Chandigarh, August 14
Pavan, a local table tennis player, from DAV Senior Secondary School of Sector 8, won the junior girls’ table tennis championship, which was held at Maharishi School, Sirhind, recently. In the final of the junior category she defeated Priya of Rajpura. A total of 200 players participated in the championship.
