Friendships and Bollywood are inseparable. From the times that Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra sat together on the bike crooning to Yeh Dosti Hum Nahi Todenge… to the latest globetrotting friends Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akthar and Abhay Deol in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, friendship as a theme is pretty much inherent to B-town products. As the world today celebrates International friendships Day, we find out which Bollywood friendships have appealed the most...

After the laughter riot Andaz Apna Apna brought forth a great on-screen friendship, it was only in Dil Chahta Hai that the Gen Next had its brush with friendship as a subject. “At that point, working on a theme based on friendships was probably a big experiment for the director,” shares Shahbaz Sekhon, a 20-year old movie buff. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is a recent addition. “Exactly, after Dil Chahta Hai, it’s only now that a movie was made celebrating friendships,” he adds.

A keen learner will always tend to learn from films, be it women empowerment or just cracking jokes on friends. “It was after the three hour’s joy ride that I figured how important friendships are to us,” Shabaz shares.

Surely, we all remember Amar and Prem driving each other up the wall in Andaz Apna Apna. “But nothing matches up to Amitabh and Dhamendra’s friendship in Sholay,” says Vivek Sharma, a businessman.

Friends, no matter how many or few, are a treasure and should always be held close to the heart. “It’s the most valuable lesson I have learnt from Dil Chahta Hai,” says Sanjay Bhatt, a member of a rock band Rudraksh. “Each person is different and everyone thinks differently. The essence of friendship is to understand and accept the differences,” he says. Sanjay also enjoyed 3 Idiots.

No matter what, most treasured moments in life are those shared with friends—whether bunking classes or unofficial trips to the hills or covering up in front of parents, friends are an integral part of the madness in life. “Whatever the reason, we friends are always together,” shares Shubhi, who is playing a role in Karan Johar’s Student of the Year. Shubhi is inspired by 3 Idiots. “Friends are together through thick and thin. Friends will always forgive you, no matter what,” she says.

For Sahil Kohli, the founder member of Xerocopy, a marketing firm, has learnt the basics of friendships from Jaane Tu Yaa Jaane Na. “It was good to see how friends get involved in the love story,” he says

So, just bury the hatchet and revive the golden moments with your pals, they are and will always be by your side. Cheers to friendship! vasudha@tribunemail.com

Yeh dosti…

True friends are those who stay close despite the distance or differences…

Friendship is one relationship that is unconditional. Friends understand you and stand by you through the thick and thin. The latest outing Cocktail has saluted the spirit of friendship by capturing its true essence. This Friendship’s Day we talk to those who have like been there for each other always…

Gang of boys

: Ayush Manchanda, Manpreet Sarkaria & Ashish Dhillon
L-R: Ayush Manchanda, Manpreet Sarkaria & Ashish Dhillon

We have heard that boys just want to have fun and it is vouched for by this trio, Ayush Manchanda, Ashish Dhillon and Manpreet Sarkaria, who have been good friends since 15 years now. “We have been with each other since our school days and had craziest times together,” says Ayush. The highlight of their craziest time is a trip to Goa.

So how do they define true friendship? Manpreet comes up with the answer, “You can be your real self with true friends. When we three are together we don’t need alcohol or girls to make us high. It’s just our jokes which make us laugh.” Ashish describes the ‘awesome threesome’ as the strongest bond of his lifetime.

Girlie fun

L-R: Devina, Sara, Ridhima, Bani, Nanki & Mannat

The general perception is that when a bunch of girls gets together either there will be a strong bond or cat fights. Bani Sahni, Mannat Arora, Sara Gupta, Ridhima Chadda, Nanki Singh and Devina Singh have literally grown up with each other. They have been friends since fourth standard. “There have been times when we weren’t in touch and didn’t talk for ages but I think true friendship is when you can sail through hard times and still be there for each other,” says Sara.

This group has a huge list of crazy moments and finds it tough to zero down on a single one. And what about those misunderstandings which threaten to break them apart?

“We have had fights and separations but we still have made it a point to clear all misunderstandings and laugh out together,” chips in Ridhima. One special thing about their girl gang? “It’s definitely the feeling of growing up together and knowing in and out of all,” adds Mannat.

Pink and blue

L-R: Esha Kukreja,Ruhi Gupta, Nimisha and Karan Sehgal

And when both sexes get together to live life to the fullest, friendship raises the bar to a Dostana effect. Nimisha Sehgal, Ruhi Gupta, Tarika Mittal, Jatesh Bassi, Varun, Esha Kukreja and Arush have been together since six years now. “It really does not make much of a difference being with guys because we all are family friends and like chilling out with each other,” says Nimisha.

We wonder how easy it is to maintain a platonic relationship. “It’s not necessary that love would strike if guys and girls hang out together. Friendship is way beyond romance,” adds Ruhi Gupta. As we all know women are from Venus and men are from Mars, how do they sort out their differences? “Differences of opinion do set in but we overcome it as we all share a strong bonding,” chips in Tarika. Let’s ask the guys about their experience of being with the girls. “We guys don’t feel awkward being with the girls. It’s just fun and for sure it’s a little different but as we have known each other for so many years, we are pretty comfortable,” conclude Jatesh Bassi.

A ride, an experience
Manpriya Singh

Riding a bike is a wonderful experience for most people and if the machine happens to be a Harley Davidson, nothing beats the feeling…

To soak in the sound and sight of fifty thousand bikes at one go is quite an experience! And if the bike happens to be a Harley Davidson, the sight becomes a spectacle. Harpreet Sandhu, lawyer, Panjab and Haryana High Court, tries to put into words the experience called Harley Davidson, Europe 2012 Rally at Rudesheim, Germany. Driving a Harley Davidson D, even on the parallel road, was quite an experience.

“Around June, I just happened to be at the place while vacationing with my wife. To be honest, I neither owned a bike nor was a HD fanatic.” That was till this happened. “It was almost a dream come true, especially for a guy from Punjab.” What strikes him first and foremost is something beyond the bike. “It is so well-organised. After a gap of every four to five thousand bikes, there was a police car for safety. They were there for the safety of people on the road.”

The precaution and passion goes hand in hand! “People all around Europe gather there to cheer up. Anybody on the road could view and motivate the participants.” Add to it the champagne toasts doing the rounds! He adds, “Imagine fifty thousand different models, colour and shapes of a single brand.”

The ones he remembers are loud and screaming “purple, green, magenta”, apart from the obvious reds and yellows. “There was also this multi-coloured bike.” Apart from the jackets and dresses alleging loyalty, there were also the flag of each country put right next to the logo.

“For those people it’s not a brand, it’s a culture.” The stories of obsession for the vehicle abound. “Apart from interacting with a lot of other participants, I met this person called Daniel, who was part of a group. They spend ten to twelve weeks cleaning their bikes. Nobody is allowed to even touch any part of the bike without permission.”

Cut to the scene here. “A lot of my friends own the brand, but not the passion. People here might just go and buy it off the showrooms but there’s a difference between buying and acquiring.” He adds, “The owners there are a very close group of people unlike the fragmented members here.”

It might still be many years before we replicate the passion and culture, but as of now he’s still high on the Harley.

Shahid unplugged

Chocolate hero Shahid Kapoor is adorably charming and wins people over with his big, bright smile and boyish demeanour. In an exclusive chat, he talks about his choices, the shades he would like to see his girl wear, and his sense of style, among other things beyond cinema.

What are the colours you would like to see on your girl?

I think women look beautiful in black and red. Even skin colour looks great on them. And obviously white!

What do you think about the trend of coloured pants these days?

Either you look really cool or you look really crappy in them. It depends on the fit and colour of the pants and who is wearing them. I am probably not somebody who would wear coloured pants off screen but on screen I would love to wear them. Talking about trends, I have noticed everyone wears interesting shoes and chappals these days like the gladiators you are wearing.

A colour you would never wear…

I don’t know. I don’t like bright, loud colours. Any colour can look cool if it is muted and in the right shade. It isn’t about the colour, it is about the shade. My favourite colour has always been blue.

How are you spending the monsoons in Mumbai?

Most of the times, I’m stuck in my car due to traffic and that annoys me very much. Sometimes I sit in my balcony and watch the rain with my dog while listening to music. If I am working, then I don’t even realise whether it is raining or not. Sometimes, I eat some nice food because those are monsoon cravings. I am a hardcore foodie and feel like eating samosa, bhajiya, and Chinese food this season.

What are the colours you would wear to a birthday party?

It depends on what kind of birthday party it is! I don’t dress differently for my own birthday. It depends on my mood. I wear whatever I feel like wearing. If I feel like being out there more, I would wear a bright colour like red. Most of the time, you will find me in stuff like denim on denim and white on white. I love wearing sneakers, jeans and a plain white tee.

Do you find lack of colour depressing?

Yes, lack of colour can be depressing. I don’t even like dim-lit places. If I am in a place that is dimly lit and doesn’t have a bright, colourful atmosphere, I won’t be able to stay there for long. I have a lot of colours like white, grey, and black in my house and one wall is painted green. I find that soothing, calming and refreshing.

What do you do in your spare time?

In my spare time, I do a lot of things which I cannot discuss (grins). (On an aside, we know that Shahid plays music and dances and cooks Italian, Indian and Chinese cuisine in his spare time.)

The year ahead

If your birthday is August 5...

Number five people are the freedom lovers. These are "idea" people with the ability to adapt to most situations. Ruled by Mercury, you may be adaptable, freedom-loving, romantic, resourceful, witty, fun-loving, curious, flexible and accommodating. If expressed negatively, non-committal, irresponsible and inconsistent.

If you are single, devote time to a new acquaintance. On the other hand, if you are in a relationship, try to improve it. Do not walk alone. You might find it difficult to control your emotions. Your unusual behaviour will confuse people around you and leave you frustrated. Financial gains will get delayed. Certain problems on the family front may mar the peace and healthy atmosphere at home. Being revengeful towards your lover will not bring any result-rather you should keep a cool head and explain your true feelings. Co-workers and subordinates will bring moments of worry and stress.

Perform Saturn poojas daily. Help is on the way. While you're making everyone else's work life smoother, don't forget your own goals and agenda. Yes, you're collecting good karma, but getting specific about what they can do for you keep the cycle going. A little extra inquiry and analysis is in order before you commit to a project.

Your communication skills will be called upon during this period on numerous occasions. Don't be afraid to socialise, once you realise that you are actually an interesting person, things will go a lot smoother. This will be a busy period, but a satisfying one, none the less.

Be tactful with a partner, especially if you are paired to Virgo. Projecting a 'united front' may be essential to vulnerable family members. A mistake may be due to your being 'under the wrong impression.' Clear it up fast.

Financial transactions would improve significantly. If you are looking for money, that time would be more suited for asking for a raise or renegotiation of a contract. Before you back or rescue someone, make sure you know all the facts about their 'situation'. Don't go by impressions, go by facts.

Stomach disorders are a possibility. Be careful while driving.

Mood: Going from one extreme to the other. Compatible signs: Virgo, Sagittarius. Lucky colours: Dark green and brown. Lucky days: Friday and Sunday. Lucky numbers: 7, 11, 13, 14, 43

Two-rrific twist

New addition to Colors’ Parichay-Nayee Zindagi Kay Sapno Ka after a leap of 9 years is a terrific twist. Ekta Kapoor will feature real-life twins – Anmol and Apurva Jyotir who will play the role of the twins to the estranged couple Kunal (played by Sameer Soni) and Siddhi (played by Keerti Nagpure). After a nationwide hunt and search for the perfect pair, Anmol and Apurva Jyotir were chosen.

Taking the story of Parichay forward, the twins will be instrumental in bringing their parents together as well as adding that double dose of dhamaal and masti to the show. The 9-year-old twins from Mumbai are very excited. We hear that after getting selected for the role, their enthusiasm knew no bounds and they cannot wait to start shooting for the show. Being TV addicts and having a natural flair for drama, Anmol and Apurva Jyotir, who excel in just about everything related to extra-curricular, are active participants in their school theatre group. The boys who consider Darsheel as their idol are now all set to work their magic on the show.

Shall we dance?

On Zee TV’s Hitler Didi, Indira (Rati Pandey) and Rishi (Sumit Vats) will participate in a dance competition, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom to raise money. They won’t tell each other and will be in disguise. This track sure reminds us of film Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.

Aamir in Jaipur

Aamir Ali recently made a quick trip to Jaipur for a shoot but is unwilling to talk about it. In the two-day shoot he went to Amber Fort, Ajmer road and relished many delicacies. He also loves shopping and bought a lot of stuff. Business with pleasure: Aamir Ali

Avinash’s love story

Avinash Sachdev who was last seen in Choti Bahu will now be seen in Star Plus’ forthcoming show Teri Meri Love Stories where he will play a talented singer but an orphan who longs for love. He will be paired opposite Shafaq Naaz.

Stage fight

At the Gold awards Anupam Shyam Ojha aka Sajjan Singh and host Manish Paul had an argument of sorts on stage. Anupam was glad he won the best villain award and gave a speech in pure Hindi which Manish objected to. That irked the senior actor.

Ekta Kapoor: I will never quit TV

Despite the fact that her home production Kya Super Cool Hai Hum was trashed by film critics, Ekta Kapoor is on cloud nine. After all, the film is close to touching Rs 50 crore mark at the box-office. Ekta gets chatty about the film, critics and more…

Despite the bad reviews, your film has exceedingly well. How do you feel?

I am very happy with the result. I am just enthralled with the response and can only say Jai Mata Di. Balaji Motion Pictures had taken a big pun on the critics by taking out a full page advertisement in a Mumbai based newspaper in which they have written what critics have mentioned about the film.

What’s your take on critics?

These critics were very vocal about how much they hated the film. We just gave them one opportunity to express what they feel. We are giving utmost respect to each comment. Next time we might transform, but this time, these boys Tusshar, Riteish and director Sachin Yardi were as shameless as part one.

How do you feel about comparisons with the first part?

Even Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi was most criticised, yet the show never looked back on its ratings. Kya Kool Hai Hum was also trashed when it was released seven years ago, but the film was on a smaller canvas so when you get bigger, you get all kinds of responses. Whenever you make a sequel, it is bound to be compared with the original.

Will we get to see The Dirty Picture on television?

We have thought about different scenes for TV broadcast and we will send the film for certification. So hopefully, you will see it soon.

Given the fact that your films are doing well on box-office, do you have any plans of quitting TV?

I will never quit the small screen, which is my bread and butter. Films are like jam that is too fattening to have on a daily basis. Now for the next six months, my office will only talk about soaps.

No more stage fright for Keira Knightley

Pride and Prejudice star Keira Knightley says she no longer has stage frights. The 27-year-old actress said that her time away from movies helped her train herself to cope with her crippling nerves on film sets, reported a publication online.

"I discovered that a lot of what I was suffering from on film sets was stage fright. It's easier for me now, and even if I do freeze, I know how to deal with it," Knightley said.

The Oscar-nominated actress will next be seen in the film adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's novel Anna Karenina, alongside Jude Law and Aaron Johnson.

Knightley said that she loved getting to grips with the complex character for the film. "She's a wonderful character, but very strange and complex. She is needy and manipulative and then there are sides of her that are vulnerable and innocent, and I sometimes think it's the innocence that pulls her down. She will not see reality and when she does, it destroys her. I found her a challenging person. I wanted to shake her and tell her to pull herself together," she added. —PTI

The aftermath

Kristen Stewart is not welcome at the premiere of her jilted boyfriend Robert Pattinson's new film Cosmopolis.

Security has been told to keep the Twilight star away from the red carpet and after-party of Pattinson's first scheduled public appearance on August 13 at the New York City premiere of Cosmopolis, reported a publication online.

The couple has fallen apart after Stewart admitted to hooking up with her Snow White and The Huntsman director Rupert Sanders after photos were published of the pair making out. At the time, Stewart released an emotional statement apologising for cheating on Pattinson.

"The decision was made because Robert just doesn't want to see her. There were fears that she could use it as a chance to talk to him in person and that sort of drama is not wanted at the premiere," a source said. "There's also the fact that if she did attend, it would distract from the film premiere itself and the movie bosses are not interested in that sort of publicity," the source added.

Yesterday, it was reported that Sanders' wife Liberty Ross has told him that he won't be directing the sequel to I if he wants to save their marriage. Sanders, 41, was originally lined up to direct the sequel after it became a hit.

Taste of his medicine!

Ace fashion designer Manish Malhotra, who was the first designer to have a showstopper in India back in 1999, isn't too happy with media giving more importance to celebrities.

"All newspaper articles on fashion weeks speak more about stars than the designers. Urmila Matondkar was the 1st actor showstopper in 1999. I started it and now I see that it's taken over the shows. Celebrities are a part of fashion glamour and style but media should put equal focus on collections too," he said.

He also clarified that he won't have showstopper for his fashion weeks but only couture shows. "Now, the challenge for designers will be to get as much focus on their work. My fashion week shows now don't have showstoppers, but my couture shows will. And I hope everyone will focus on my collection and especially all the young to be brides," he added. Well, well, we get the hint Manish!

Creating a storm

On Zee TV’s DID L’il Masters, superstar Salman Khan and the gorgeous Katrina Kaif promoted their upcoming release Ek Tha Tiger and brewed up a storm on the sets.

Salman’s sporting attitude, his playful chemistry with Katrina and his hilarious antics with the Grandmaster of the show, Mithun Da were a laugh riot. At various moments during the shoot, Salman ended up clearly revealing through his actions, that he is still very fond of Katrina and even possessive about her in a cute way! When asked by host Jay Bhanushali if he would consent to shaking a leg with the young mummies of all the L’il Masters, Salman said, “Oh sure, I have absolutely no qualms about dancing with the mommies … as long as we don’t find out later that there are daddies in the audience eager to shake a leg with Katrina Later, when the young and talented skippers of the show – Raghav, Prince and Neerav - revealed that they had put together a romantic dance act to express their feelings for Katrina, he gave the trio a menacing look and snarled at them, saying, “I’ll deal with you guys later!”
