One killed, three seriously injured in separate accidents

Fatehgarh Sahib, August 4
One of the pillion riders was killed and the other was seriously injured, when a speeding car (bearing no PB-26-5950) collided head on with a motorc cle on the Khamano-Chamkaur Sahib road today noon. The driver of the car fled after the accident.

According to the police, Balbir Singh and Gurjant Singh, residents of Manela village, were going on their motorcycle from Chamkaur Sahib to Khamano. Balbir Singh was driving bike, while Gurjant Singh was sitting on back seat. As they reached near Khamano, a speeding car hit their motorcycle, seriously injuring both of them. They were rushed to the Civil Hospital, Khamano, and after first aid they were taken to Ludhiana. Balbir Singh succumbed to his injuries, where as Gurjant Singh is in serious condition. The police has registered the case.

In another incident, a truck driver seriously injured two people on a scooter near Gurudwara Jyoti Swarup Sahib in Fatehgarh Sahib. According to the police, the victims, identified as Nirmal Singh alias Raju and Mangat Ram, both residents of Mainn village in Patiala district, were on their scooter when a speeding truck hit them. Both were seriously injured and were rushed to the local Civil hospital.

After first aid they were taken to the PGI where their condition is stated to be serious.

The police has arrested the truck driver, identified as Sat Paul, resident of Sangrur, and impounded the truck.

Tough time for visitors to District Administrative Complex
Water coolers installed at the complex switched off

The recent government orders to change office timings and the ban on using air-conditioners and electronic gadgets may save electricity, but the visitors to the District Administrative Complex are suffering as the water coolers installed there have been switched off. People are forced to drink hot water without RO.

A Class IV employee said they had been directed not to use water coolers. He said officials were drinking cold filtered water, but the rest of the people, including the employees, had to drink hot water.

The circular of the DC stated that air-conditioners were not to be used and to ensure minimum usage of electricity keeping in the view the electricity crisis in the state. He has warned that if anyone found using AC or wasting electricity during the surprise checking would not be spared. The officers said it was difficult to work without an AC. They said officials sitting in Chandigarh were enjoying all the facilities, whereas those working on field had been punished.

Meanwhile, the change in office timings had affected the working though the officials, including the Deputy Commissioner and the SSP, reach their respective offices at 8 am but a few people come to the offices to get their work done. The District Administrative Complex wears a deserted look at that hour. It is around 10 am when people start coming and they hardly get time to tell their grievances as officers leave offices at 2 pm.

Drive for vaccinating dogs tomorrow

People for Animals Society, Chandigarh, in collaboration with the Patiala Municipal Corporation, will hold a vaccination camp for dogs at the Anardana Chowk park on Monday. This will certainly bring a sigh of relief to the city residents as there have been numerous dog bite incidents in the recent past.

As many as 2,899 dog bite cases have been reported at the Government Rajindra Hospital, Patiala, in the last three years. Apart from this, 3,674 dog bite cases were registered at various civil dispensaries of the district taking the total number of such cases to 6,573. There is no exact data about the patients that have been treated at private hospitals.

Office-bearers elected

The Shri Brahmin Sabha, Sirhind, Fatehgarh Sahib, in its election meeting held here yesterday unanimously elected its new office-bearers. The meeting was presided over by RN Sharma, patron. It was attended by hundreds of members.

On this occasion, the members of the Sabha passed a resolution to wage a war against social evils like drug abuse, female foeticide, dowry and corruption. The members also took a pledge to eradicate all these menace from society.

The Sabha appreciated the efforts of the SSP, Fatehgarh Sahib, in curbing this menace in the district and decided to extend him full support for this noble cause.

The newly elected office-bearers elected are Varinder Rattan — president, Sham Sunder — senior vice-president, advocate Vivek Sharma — general secretary, Suresh Sharma — press secretary and Sanjay Angrish — cashier.

Divyansh, Ronak bring laurels to PKR Jain Vatika

Students from various schools took part in inter-school debating and recitation competitions held at PKR Jain Vatika here today. Speaking on the topic "economic development and involvement", Divyansh, a student of the host school, secured the first position in the debating competition.

Meenakshi of Chaman Vatika and Tushar of SD Vidya School were declared second and third respectively.

Another student of PKR Jain Vatika, Ronak, topped the recitation competition. Payal of Spring Field School and Harit Jasiwal of Mind Tree School got second and third positions respectively.

CBI court convicts one, acquits one

In a major development in the corruption case involvig Food Corporation of India employees, a Central Bureau of Investigation Court today convicted SP Singh while acquitting the other accused, YK Sharma.

It was in year 2009 when a Central Bureau of Investigation team caught SP Singh, assistant manager of the Food Corporation of India,, Barara, and his accomplice accepting a bribe of Rs 30,000 from a rice mill owner. It was after the mill owner Shashi Bhushan complained that the two were arrested.

The court will announce the quantum of punishment for Singh on August 7. Finding no circumstantial evidence against the other accused, YK Sharma, the court acquitted him.

Complainant's plea dismissed

The special CBI court here today dismissed an application filed by a complainant in a corruption case involving a UT police Sub-Inspector. The complainant had demanded that the former SHO, Inspector Dilsher, should be included as an accused in the case.

Accusing the CBI of biased investigation, the complainant had alleged that the Inspector was equally involved in demanding bribe, yet the CBI had given him a clean chit despite the fact that he was booked earlier. His name was dropped from the chargesheet.

The case was registered in 2010 when a trap was laid after receiving a complaint from Gagan Gupta. As per the complaint, Sub-Inspector Hans Raj had demanded a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from Gagan to favour him in a case of cheating in which he was granted an anticipatory bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Gagan alleged that Hans Raj had demanded Rs 1 lakh to help him investigate the case and when he expressed his inability to pay such a huge amount, he settled for Rs 40,000.

The CBI had arrested the then SHO of the Industrial Area police station, Dilsher Singh, along with the Sub-Inspector.

P’kula carjacking case solved
Robbers arrested near Jalandhar; car recovered

Panchkula, August 4
In a major breakthrough in the Verna carjacking case which took place near the road separating Sector 26 and 27, Panchkula, on July 25, two car robbers (members of a carjacking gang) were arrested near Jalandhar by the Jalandhar CIA with the car.

The youths, identified as Bikramjeet alias Vicky (22) and Tarsem Singh (22), are reportedly part of a seven member carjacking gang which has been on the prowl particularly in Panchkula and also in other areas of Punjab.

The Panchkula police would be getting the accused on production warrants after three days, when their remand period is over at Jalandhar. Apart from the Verna car, other cars have also been recovered from the youth.

According to the police, the youths were planning another carjacking in Panchkula.

With the arrest of the robbers, three carjacking cases from Panchkula district stand solved, claims the police. The Swift car that was used in the crime was also robbed from Punjab.

The team which caught the youths with the Verna car was headed by Inspector Angrez Singh. "It is an interstate gang which was daily committing a car jacking in different areas, including Ludhiana, Abohar , Bathinda, Panchkula, and Barwala, and was also planning another robbery in Panchkula. Their other accomplices would be nabbed soon," said a seniorpolice official.

"A Scorpio, an Innova and a Verna cars that were robbed from Panchkula district have been recovered. The other members will be arrested soon," said Inspector Angrez Singh, incharge of the Jalandhar CIA. He added: "The youths have confessed that they have committed 14 car jacking incidents with their accomplices. We have them to into remand till Monday and then they would be handed over to the Panchkula police."

Sources also told that the gang has committed around 30 carjackings till now. The accused revealed that Panchkula was on their hit list as the city has a number of escape routes.

It was on July 25 when an old couple was robbed of their Verna car at gunpoint by 3 youths. The victims, Kulwant Singh and his wife Tej Kaur, resident of Sector 27, Panchkula, were on their way back home from Nada Sahib Gurdwara when they were forcibly stopped by the accused. Kulwant Singh (55) is an accounts officer at the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited office, Chandigarh.

Saupin’s-32 enter final

Once again Saupin’s - 32 gave a tough time to their opponents Delhi Public School by scoring 4:0 in the UT Tournament Football Match U-17. The tournament was held at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 23, Chandigarh. Sanjana and Tanvi both have once again proved their excellence by scoring three and one goal, respectively, against DPS, 40.

They propelled their team to the final against Carmel Convent, which will be held at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 23, playground on Monday.

Cricket trials for women academy

The PCA has decided to set up a women cricket academy for the players of Chandigarh and Mohali at GMMS, Sector 26, Chandigarh, (near Police Lines). The selection trials for the same will begin at 3 pm on August 7.

Women players from Chandigarh and Mohali are eligible to participate in the same. All the players are advised to report at the venue of trials by 2.30 pm with proof of their eligibility i.e. age and residence proof to Mohinder Singh (convener, PCA Women Committee).

The candidates must come in white kits and carry their own cricketing gear.
